we talk about the process of lighting an ikea bookshelf to display your collection a bit brighter.
heres what i used and the corresponding score (out of 10) that i recommend it.
SURGE PROTECTOR (10/10)
love the flexible cable and 90 degree plug
Philips 4 Outlet Power Strip Surge Protector with 2 USB Ports, 4 Ft Power Cord, Designer Braided Extension Cord, Flat Plug Extension Cord, Perfect for Office or Home Décor, 720 Joules, 2.4A USB, SPC62 www.amazon.com...
POWER SOURCE (7/10)
I have noticed it gets hotter than i'm comfortable with
[UL Listed] Chanzon 12V 5A 60W AC... www.amazon.com...
REMOTE CONTROL (6/10)
using multiples confuses the frequencies. using one, you should be fine
SLBSTORES Mini Remote Controller... www.amazon.com...
SPLITTER (10/10)
10 pack 5.5x2.1mm DC Female Jack...
www.amazon.com...
MAIN WIRE (9/10)
The white stripe is the only indicator of positive/negative. red and black will be easier to use.
22 GA Gauge Red and Black Speaker... www.amazon.com...
HEAT SHRINKING BUTT CONNECTORS (7/10)
Crimping doesnt collapse and hold very well
AIRIC 100pcs Waterproof Heat... www.amazon.com...
CONNECTORS (8/10)
wire gauge is very small and challenging to work with. theyre not meant to be spliced but i cut them in half to stretch my money and get double the connectors
EvZ 10PCS LED 5050 Single Colour... www.amazon.com...
LED LIGHT STRIPS (8/10)
Brightness is great, and color is wonderful (bluer in pics than in real life) but stripping the gum to reveal the connector points is a pain. also had to connect to the bottom of the strip sometimes and had to rub the adhesive off of that which was also annoying. but the "5050" ratio is definitely the way to go.
UPERNIGHT (TM) 16.4FT 5M SMD... www.amazon.com...
LED CHANNELS (10/10)
Had to cut them but they work like a champ and give a classy feel.
StarlandLed 10-PACK V Shape LED... www.amazon.com...

Thanks Again!!!
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this video specifically. I used this video 3 years ago to run lights in tow of my Billy shelfs and it turned out absolutely beautiful. Now 3 years later I'm doing another Billy and coming right back here. Still so helpful. Thank again my brother!
this makes a HUGE difference, going back to you 4 dummies show this is like serving top notch food on presentable dinnerware (where billys by them selves are just plastic plates). good job thanks for sharing
Nice work! I’d personally slap some black spray paint on the aluminum pieces before installing them to make them more seamless.
Excellent work! Your shelves really come to life. I'll be re-watching this when i do my own lighting.
Mann! Not gonna lie.. It really did make a huge difference.
Looking blue, but most definitely catches your eye. From previous videos of you guys all hanging out in the den...man cave, whatever you wanna call it. It's a big difference. Looks way better then mine. But of coarse I'm renting so, no plans to make permanent fixtures for my figures...one day maybe. I can be envious of others collections and not be bitter.
The Producers Producer rolled up his sleeves put on a hard hat & went to work. Great job. Looks very nice.
Bobby Electrician-Face, lol. This is awesome! I’ve been back and forth on how to light my Billy shelves as well. Thank you for this.
"Connect the power to the cable, and then screw on your other cable" NO!, never, I mean NEVER, screw cables together or mess with open wires connected directly to the outlet. Even with switches on 'off'. 1st thing you learn as an Electrical Engineer.
I'm glad I found this comment before I made my own. It's common sense, but you know how that goes.
@@darkjedv0 Thank you, no matter how low you think the Voltage is on a (5V) converter, failure means it's still connected to 110/220Volts. (Even less then) 200 mili Amps is lethal.
Lovely touch with the led strips.
It really did make your Awesome collection come to life. 👍😎
Thank you for uploading this Bobby! I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time.
Bobby get-her-done face🤣. I know that was a lot of work. Looks great and thanks for showing us how its done, instead of keeping it to yourself (like I got nice shelves and you can't)
I’m assuming that you didn’t run the channeling the full width of the shelf because the lights weren’t the full width. Is that correct? Can the light strips come in longer lengths closer to the width of the shelf?
Cardboard Bots the lights can be cut to many different lengths. I tried multiple different lengths. 12 inches wasn’t enough, 25 was almost too much so I went with 18
Thank-you.
So jelly....
Very nice display, you sir, are the gold standard for nerds across the world and the galaxy beyond......
Nice! I've been thinking of adding a piece like that to block the glare from the LEDs on my Detolf cases. Still not decided on what. May paint them to kinda match the wire rack inside the Detolf.
If you have black tape maybe consider running that along the front of the aluminum rails? Could look slick, slick.
or use black spray paint
Very useful! If it's not too crass, are you willing to share how much you spent?
Just did this to my billys except I used 8 puck LEDs facing down on the top and mid shelf(4 pucks each) and replaced the other shelves with glass so the light passes down each level. I think the lighting is more appealing coming down from the tops of models, but could be personal preference.
Great Vid as usual Bobby! Your Transformers displays look amazing and I hope you do more. Your Star Wars Dioramas inspired me to make my first Dioramas for the Sail Barge. I am surprised you did not paint the silver light rails black. Looks like a lot of work that was well worth it in the end! Thanks for sharing.
Tydirium hanger I decided to keep it silver because it ties into the frame of the glass case
So after seeing your video with the dam diorama for the Decepticons, I was thinking what a great job you did but you felt it was lacking somewhat and basically, all it needed was some good lighting to complement it. Your set-up with the Autobots in front of the ark and the one on a highway with the XTransbots stunticons (I think) really look amazing. They really look like theatre pieces.
WOW!!! Looks amazing
Apologies if you have already covered this in another video but your Ark mountain diorama is amazing Will/have you covered how you did that please?
This was great information. A true step by step. Thanks for sharing. Shelves are looking amazing all lighted up!
That's exactly how I did it, channels and all. Just sticking those led strips exposed to the wood always makes cool displays look mad chintzy to me.
Added to say, I sprayed mine down with something close to that brown/black Ikea color so they're pretty seamless in appearance when the lights are off.
Yes! I've been talking about doing this for years. Phenomenoninal tutorial man!
Question: can the channel be cut on a regular chop saw/mitre saw or would you require a special blade for cutting/grinding through the metal?
Cardboard Bots I would imagine
I don't know if we will ever hear Bobby say butt-connectors this much again. It might be just me but I was getting a little nervous watching you handle tools.
But end results are nice. I will agree proper lighting is needed for our displays. I've considered using like mini spot lights both on the top and bottom of the shelves to try and avoid the top down lighting effect which gives those bottom shadows.
A nicely informative video though.
THANK YOU! This was great! I've been looking for a few days for this exact type of setup. Also thank you for the links.
I've never done a light set up.. I just got a cheap 3 foot light strip for $5 at a store called Five Below to try under my TV.
And it made me want to do a lot more now haha.
You did an awesome job brother 😉
Nicely done sir.
Great job Bobby, looks awesome 👌👌
I know it’s a little late now, but why didn’t you spray paint the aluminum channels for the lights black so they aren’t so obvious?

Only thing I would suggest besides not electrocuting yourself is to not use a knife for removing the plastic cover on top of the LED strip. It's too easy to accidentally cut through the LED strip circuit and hose your light segment. I peel them back from the end and snip off the plastic cover with scissors.
I love these types of projects. It is always fun watching them come together. That said, anyone have any ideas on how to replace light piping with LEDs? I've been looking into trying to hook up my CHUG figures that have light piping with LEDs, but I haven't really been able to find any tutorials or any real guide of any kind thus far. I have no clue what type of battery pack to use, what type of ideal LEDs to use (too bright vs. too dim), or the best way to place them (trying to place hardware in the head vs. mounting in body cavities and running wire while not hampering transformations). I currently have lighting to accentuate the light piping, but after seeing some of the light kits out there for third party figures, I really like the idea of having dedicated lights rather than having to rely on an external light source for the piping to do its thing.
Wow excellent display !
The end result is awesome! Great job bubbeh avionics face
That Custom Thrilling 30 Metroplex Really complements Titans Return Tripticon, And I love the The Stunticon set up so far-
Looks good bro! Lighting is a important part of any collection in my opinion.
Beautiful 🤩
Looks great! Well done.
Super cool vid! Very informative. Do you prefer the blue tinted light or the warmer? Looks like the All Glass lighting is a warmer tint.
Amazing work Bobby, makes that collection really pop! Thank you for sharing!
Looks great. Is the blue tint really there or a camera thing?
razingst0rm it’s a cool white but looks more blueish on camera than in person
Do you think if you attached the light strip directly to the top of the billy shelves, it would be noticeable?
they are thin so not so much. I think he used the Al channel so the light would be angled
@@kennmossman8701 thank you!
looks fantastic , are you using a separate power supply to run each billy or is the same one powering all of them ?
Jason Young one power source runs about 16 feet of lights. I used 2 systems for this set up
Hey Bobby! Or anyone really great video and my question is only sorta related lol. I found this video by looking up review for various ikea bookshelves. I've been trying to answer two questions. How well does the Billy work on carpet is it wobbly like some of the crappy target ones I bought. Also did you screw yours into the wall? Is this necessary or ikea trying to prevent parents for blaming them for kids being kids.
Question, have to thought about painting them black to match the billy's.
Joseph Burton initially that was my plan but they matched the frame of the glass case and kind of tied it all together, so I decided to keep it silver
Looks really good. I do need slice my wire lights but at moment till my MP and 3p autobot collection is complete i will just leave the lights as they are
Whatcha hiding behind that black square Uncle Skully? :) Great video, very informative.
kalron27 my reflection lol
Lol
Very nice! I need to do something like this when I move. So how many bookcases do you have set up per outlet? Likewise, remotes? Like does the 1 remote control all the bookcases or is there a couple of remotes for 2 or 3 cases each?
Squall Reviews one remote will do them all but I suggest different remotes for each set up. This was done with two set ups. One for 2 and another for the remaining 4
Was there a difference in the lighting by having them facing the bots ? Or is it the same like the way they sit on your detolf?
That’s an interesting question about directionality of the lights.
Sh0ckWav3 xVLx the channels angle the lights toward the bots instead of straight down on them
@@MythsAndHeroes which is better? Angle or facedown?
More cool content! Thanks Bobby, I found it interesting and quite useful.
Looks great!
It would seem the first step would be to figure out how many shelves you want to light and how much lighting per shelf, so you can determine an appropriate size of power supply, number of splitters needed, etc. :p
Thank you! What are your thoughts on sticking the LED strips directly to the cabinets.. not using the aluminum channels?
I think he used the Al channel so the light would be angled. use wide beam-angle strips
A much much easier option is torchstar led light bars from Amazon. They are plug and play, no wire stripping and two fit perfectly per shelf.
I need to know which figure was blacked out on the top of that one shelf at the end....
Matthew Mlodzik my reflection lol
@@MythsAndHeroes Ahhh I was thinking top secret prototype
Great video, your collection looks great. I’ll give more thought to Billy’s as I add more shelves. What type of shelf is that in between the Billy’s that appears to be a double Detolf?
A very expensive case lol
Wow, looks great. How long did it take to do all of it?
3 days
That’s not too bad!
Wait a second!!!!! Do you have a retail transformer (Metroplex) in a Detolf and its over 2’ tall? Wasn’t this a running joke on SCU a year ago? Great informative video dude! 🤘
Primacon that is not a detolf my friend
Bobby Skullface L my bad! 👍 is it an even more expensive glass cabinet with a retail release in it? 🥳
This is giving me ideas.
Great! Super informative
Holy shit that looks fucking awesome
Great vid...and timely....doing this myself.
Is a two-way splitter absolutely essential? I cannot get the strips to light up when connected via the wires.
Imagine if you would use the metric system like the rest of the wold how easy it would be to measure things. :) nice video! Good to get some tips.
there is something being blocked shelf above Metroplex' and i must know what it is bcuz its blocked from my sight
Henry Phamo my reflection
Can you run the led's in a parallel config? Or y
Does each end "need" that USB connection?
they are in parallel
The link for the light doesnt work anymore , what other links do you have
WHAT IS THAT BLACK RECTANGLE AT 10:06???
RONJIE.COM my face blacked out
8:09 Robert starts laughing at trypticon in the detolf
Great "how to" but what are you hiding at the end?... either way looks great.
David Garcia my reflection
Thank you so much for doing this video, very helpful, looking to do this with my shelves so this video is very much appreciated bro
the close-ups are nice but it is hard to see the overall design/layout
should have gotten different light colors for the diorama shelfs. like a warm light for the outside ark shelf to look like sunlight and they are really outside.
balin32 you can light yours however you want buddy. I wanted museum lighting. :)
what's behind the blacked out square @10:11

@@MythsAndHeroes lol...i missed that before. Thanks
ayyy fellow transformers fan
Nice. You should see my lighting setup
Need a new cribs video man, looks like your whole basement is redone!
What is up with those PANTS, MAAAACK?
Mechanic them my workin pants ;)
Yo Bobby to cut your metal rails a grinder with a metal cutting blade would have worked better than a saw. Awesome looking display man👍🏻
Craig Robbins I was thinking of a miter saw with metal blade to cut through them. The grinder is a nice idea. Sparks a little though for indoor use?
Step 10... say fuck this and get Ikea Dioder lights.
Where can I get a color changing led light bar that doesn't use wires but instead has a built in battery? (with a remote). I ask since I don't want to drill into the real wood barrister bookcase and the doors on the front prevent running wires. I'm limited to putting it on top of the front door on the inside trim and I need it to be small so not to bump things as it slides back into the shelf. Right now I'm using puck lights on the bottom of the shelf but that angle creates a lot of shadows and its still hard to see figures well.
today on this old house....
for gawds sake take parts out of the package first
Great if you want to learn about how not to do things. Horrible sound and not very informative.
