FDNY 1988 Mack Alcohol Foam Engine 206 start-up

- We are on Grand Street near Metropolitan Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where we are treated to a start-up of FDNY Alcohol Foam Engine 206, which is housed with Hazmat 1 and Engine 206 (which happened to be on a run at the time). One of the firefighters who happened to be there (most likely awaiting the shift change) was kind enough to let me in and show me the rig. Foam 206 is a 1988 Mack. There are a couple of these rigs still around, but they are hard to find. This engine has the old school grill with the gyro light in the middle, as well as old ditch lights and flashers on the roof. The rear is retrofitted with a foam pump as well as a large holding tank and converter. Enjoy the sight of this engine, as well as the excellent Mack growl it gives off. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on March 5th, 2012.

That is what Real Firetrucks are.Good old classic Macks, nothing better.
Love the old Mack Fire trucks
My department has a 1989 Mack as a reserve engine. Still a great running rig and most definitely the fastest. The thing will fly.
I appreciate the old Macks. In 1987, I was trained on a 1980 Mack tanker. My favorite Mack was 7E2, a 1968 R Model Mack, serial number 1001 at Bolton, MA Volunteer Fire Department.
Great video I wish they still used these
LISTEN TO THAT BEAUTIFUL DETROIT WITH AIR-STARTER!
Not a Detroit, Mack motor
Love the old Mack’s. Great catch
Love the old school CF Mack pumpers
Macks are awesome trucks . Need to bring back the CF and also MC, MR for fire trucks again
Love the hazmat rig, god i miss Macks........
Wow, still all nice and beautiful. Its nice to see some of these still in use.
For example , Every Satellite Unit is a Mack , One of the Reserve Rescues is a Mack , The Foam Tender at Engine 238 is a Mack , & Now for the rest , Foam Unit 5 , Foam Unit 95 , Foam Unit 96 , Foam Unit 152 , Foam Unit 154 , Foam Unit 167 , Foam Unit 206 , Foam Unit 260 , Foam Unit 294 & Foam Unit 321
firefighting foam is used as an extinguishing agent for ordinary combustible (class A) and flammable liquid (class B) fires, and as a vapor barrier when it is applied to spills of flammable liquid and hazardous chemicals in order to prevent them from igniting. it looks like liquid soap in its concentrated form before it is mixed with water and air to create the finished foam which you'd see firefighters spraying from hoses. that's my short version of what firefighting foam is.
I love them mack engine's... awesome trucks
Ahhh The Macks ... Gotta love um ... :-)
LISTEN TO THAT BEAUTIFUL DETROIT DIESEL...
you cant beat the classics
Cool Mack!
The BEAST AWAKENS!!!
hahaha, nice to see the gas house gang. My dad was a firefighter in this company for years.
I love that truck.
I love the Macks! I'm originally from near Cleveland Ohio and a buddy of mine owns a 68 Mack that he takes to parades and stuff and its kind of ironic but I recently moved to a small town in south west Georgia whos volunteer department has a 72 Mack that was rebuilt in 85 originally from Bohemia New York! Still runs beautifully love driving it!!
FDNY Foam units are former Engine company units converted by the shops. At least when this was filmed. they are staffed by firefighters of the Engine company they are assigned to. See units in comments.
I love the old mack pumpers
Mack's are great they are more a classic to firefighting
Thank you for the information.
Its beautifull
Back when firetrucks were firetrucks....
AR-AFFF. Alcohol resistant aqueous film forming foam. A type of foam that resists breakdown from polar solvents. We carry 30 gallon of the stuff. And 20 gallon type A for woodland fires and houses. A is basically modified dish soap. Love that Mack rumble. Our neighbor station had a 73 CF600 until a few years ago. Reliable as it gets.
nice f250 and rigs
Love it :)
couldn't agree more
NOICE!!!!
Is this foam unit still around?
Noting else looks like a Mack! :-D
Does this truck have an air starter? It was hard to hear it roll over because of the air compressor running.
yes it is
What was the purpose for the white flashing light in the front center of the truck?
I don’t know, but it’s probably NYPD’s equivalent to a roto-ray. Sometimes a static light but flashes occasionally. Possibly a Mars light as it seems to draw an 8 like figure with the beam.
What are the alcohol foam units used for?
@fenderP16 This Is One Of The Two Reserve HazMat 1 Rigs The Other One Is At The Rock
It is.
What is that long pipe for a the side of the Foam truck?
Is that the Spare Hazmat rig next to it ?
"Oooh, alcohol foam"
Eats some
"Thats not what I thought...."
😆😆😆
Certainly makes for an interesting EMS run for the engine afterwards.....
my words dude
that hazmat isn't in service any more right?
What engine is that?
Anyone know the name of the light in the center of the truck?
That is the Spare Hazmat 1 right because the current Hazmat 1 Is a 2013 Ferrara?

Wh y is this unit Id Alcohol faom 206? I understand the Foam and 206 parts of the ID just not the Alcohol part. Would some one tell me about this specific word being a part of this units ID please. Thank you. Also thank you for the video.
A 1988 Mack Pumper probably belonged to Engine 24

@firefighter54210 Yep. I have a freind who works at engine/foam 154 on staten island. and they use it for bruch fires, chemical fires and even medical runs if the engine is out.

And that's not even the HazMat Operations

Specificically, it's a Code 3 Stinger.
