Yes 3 firefighters died from a backdraft wearing the old rubber coats and hip boots. So the switch to bunker gear began. To this day the old fdny guys say the bunker gear was more dangerous to work in because it gave you the sense of invincibility. You couldn’t feel the heat and it would get incredibly heavy when wet. Many had heart attacks because of the added weight from the bunker gear when it got wet. Also many died because they went to far into a fire thinking they were safe but would in turn run out of air, simply because they couldn’t feel the heat. The rubber coats and hip boots should of stayed. Bunker gear has done more harm than good. Plus it holds more cancer causing carcinogens. The rubber gear you could rinse it off with a hose and it was cleans and you could unbutton and also wash the liner. The new bunker gear takes forever to wash then long periods of time to dry.
