I met Mitch Kupchak (the Lakers GM) the summer of 2016.. I worked for a chain storage company where he rented a unit. He was complaining to me about how his rent went up $12. I really wanted to tell him “maybe you should ask Deng for some money back” 😂
What I loved about all these horrible contracts is that they continued to float around the league for years, making for some really incredible voodoo math to make trades work.
That Blazers rant was PERSONAL 😭. I never quit grasped how DETRIMENTAL 2016 was to the blazers. All that money to like KD or just better players would have been so much better
They matched the Nets’ awful contract for Allen Crabbe , but at least he, and Evan Turner played games for them. Festus Ezili was”injured the whole damn time.” Urinating tree
I think the problem was that a lot of teams cleared out cap because they convinced themselves they had a shot at KD. So they cleared out $30-$40 million and lost out on KD, so they went “well, we’ve got all this money. We have to use it on something.”
You guys can go even deeper on that Magic Thunder trade and basically say the Thunder traded Serge Ibaka for Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, 2021 first-round pick (became Tre Mann), 2022 first-round pick (became Jalen Williams), 2023 first-round pick (via Heat), , 2024 first-round draft pick, 2025 first-round pick swap, 2026 first-round pick. Sam Presti is a thief in the night
The Ibaka trade was actually even worse than yall made it sound for the Magic, because they gave up Sabonis and Vic and those pieces eventually turned into Haliburton for the Pacers, and Shai and JDub plus picks for the Thunder. Major yikes lol. Great video yall.
Doc is a bum coach who's been coasting of one .500 season with a bad team and one championship with super team for years, honestly he could've done a lot worse then a mild case of nepotism
@@SnuggieMaple Doc is a bad coach and his career lives from the hype of the 08 championship, which he contributed almost nothing to. i remember listening to the starters podcast and they were talking about how all of the new tv money meant that these contracts were actually all perfectly acceptable and smart. i yelled bismack biyombo! at my radio and stopped listening not long after that.
That Horford signing was wild cause I remember there was a source off at the end where one guy was saying he was going to the Celtics and another guy said he was gonna go back to the Hawks with Dwight Genuinely super stressful but we got our guy in the end 🍀
I really think this offseason is not talked about enough. Role players were getting payed like future HOF’s and the funniest thing is that it wasn’t just two or three bad teams doing this it was literally everyone
As a Nets fan, love what we did in that offseason. We had no draft picks and just said "Fuck it" and just threw money at everyone just to screw with other teams.
Ironically KD could’ve formed his own super team with the thunder by them drafting sabonas and trading for oladipo. Adding that with kd and Westbrook and you got something special
Yeah, but steph, and prime draymond are def better than Russ and oladipo. By destroying the thunder KD joined a straight up unfair team and took out one of their best competitors. If he stayed in okc he would still have to beat the 73 win warriors.
A lot of these teams problems is that they committed players to such long deals, if they gave the kitchen sink to a role player for like 2 years they wouldn’t be crippled
This was like 3 years after that horrid trade with Boston they were a lolcow the phrase poverty franchise was invented for them specifically Anthony Bennett embodied the franchise at the time😂😂😂
the only notable thing anyone would remember from Bennetts time with the Nets is appearing on Shaqtin a Fool when he said "Don't watch us (the Nets) play this season"
As a heat fan, the Dwade one was just so stupid for absolutely no reason. They told the best player in franchise history, that's primarily responsible for them having 3 chips in the first place (LeBron ain't coming to Miami without Dwade) and one season removed from Dwade carrying the heat to the semi finals game 7 against the raptors without Bosh and with Whiteside playing like shit before missing the final four games anyway "fuck you, kick rocks, I'm not paying you more than Tyler Johnson nor even half of what we're offering Whiteside". Dude was never the highest paid player on the heat and Pat wouldn't even offer him 50 million when he just did the same for Tyler fucking Johnson.
It deserves mentioning that NBA teams must pay at least 90 percent of the salary cap and the teams couldn't renegotiate with players under contracts so that in part explains why so many unworthy players got those contracts; teams had to spend the money.
"Is Dragan Bender still playing professional basketball in the world?" "No, pickup basketball on a high school court doesn't count." That back-and-forth response was hilarious.

In a sea of terribly bland RUclips sports commentary channels, you guys provide something unique in the art direction and dual convo commentary. You guys will grow quite a bit this year for sure
yall gotta contextualize by mentioning the nba has a salary floor of 90% of the cap, sometime you just gotta give guys money to not get penalized, perfect example is this season w the rockets giving dildo bricks 20m/yr
Numbers don't really tell the whole story. Number 1, a clear downgrade on Al Horford at that point in his career. Not Dwight's fault, but still, counts against him. He also wasn't ever going to get a better fit at that point in his career with prime James Harden. The fact that the Rockets were so easily able to replace him with a young player like Clint Capela speaks volumes. Also, apparently he was such a delight in the locker room that the Hawks players were incredibly happy at the news of his departure. Trust me on this one, I'm a Pistons fan, and as many rebounds that Andre Drummond pulled down, the rest of his game never developed. The kind of center that Dwight was quickly were becoming role players instead of the focal point of a team, which is what he was paid like. Do not get me wrong, the Bazemore contract was more egregious, but it was a bad contract, and I will die on that hill.
