My Stunted Goldfish: Some warnings and advice

  • Hi everyone!
    It's me again, Aquastarr!
So today I want to go over the few stunted fish I have. Keep in mind that while I kept goldfish as a child and teen, with my father.. we did not know half what I do now. So when I started back up in the goldfish hobby back in 2016... I did made some mistakes with water changes, medications, food and feeding.
I believe we all learn through each other, with time and by being honest. So I'm sharing the fish I own who are stunted and small in stature. I'll be sharing how I contributed to their growth.. and the ones who simply came from bad backgrounds.
I detail that I believe the Repashy soilent green did not offer enough protein for my young growing fish. Please note that it's no blame on Repashy, but simply saying I should have fed bit more raw proteins in addition to the gel food, and should have fed bigger meals.
Worms and insects prompt a true feeding instinct in our fish. It encourages growth as well. I strongly stand by my new belief that young goldfish benefit greatly from being fed live prey or at least frozen/thawed. In addition with proper care and breeding.
    Thanks for watching everyone 🙂

Dont be too hard on yourself. A sign of a good keeper is realising a mistake and doing what you can to correct it. I keep fancy goldfish, I also breed them. Naturally some of them stay rather small and some grow absolutely huge and very quick, i think a lot of it depends on the genetic lottery. A lot of youtubers pay significant amounts of money for specially bred fish which are selectively bred to be big with accentuated features, chances of you finding them in pets stores are small. I think the biggest misconception youtubers sell is that if you follow all the "rules" your fish be grow to be like theirs when chances are they wont. Some of my fish have stunted tails, fused tail fins and one is just a completely bizarre shape, but that's what gives them their character. Your fish are beautiful, you should be proud!

Tysm!💕 Many goldfish keepers say that ANY fish can grow extra large. From my own experience and seeing other keepers results.. I believe the genetic factor plays its role definitely. Thanks for watching 💜💜💜

I don’t think stunting is necessarily bad for goldfish as there’s no scientific proof or any evidence that they stunting harms there health. Also to think about it the majority of oldest goldfish in the world where very heavily stunted yet lived 30-40 years old!Tish the oldest goldfish that i think was 43 years old and was only 4.5 inches long!

I think what stunted my goldfish at 4 inches is that the cold in my room isn't that good for their health. (Minnesota weather.) They adapted, and looks like almost every thin fish combined (breeder for our school fish project bread them to be small too.) His tail takes up his entire lower half in length. He is extremely healthy looking and hardy, just not going to get past maybe 8 inches.

Anyone who's kept these fish for a while has made mistakes & a lot of people are so judgemental about it. It's not helpful to listen to someone who does everything perfectly! Thanks for mentioning underfeeding, nobody ever does. I'm a big fan- your tanks look great. And I think Blue Boy has a lovely little shape.

hey friend nice to see you again. With regular water change more than the normal. It might not get really dangerous. Goldfish, carp, koi emits a hormone which inhibits their growth if water is not constantly being renewed. As a result these fish are more easily prone to stunted growth. Other fish may become stunted as a result of small aquarium or pond spaces.

Just watching your video here is my two cents worth...... Goldfish excrete a hormone into the water and when it reaches a certain level the fish sence it and they stunt themselves that's why is crucial to change some of your water very regular..... Loads of store bought fish are often stunted by chemicals nitrates and poor genetics when very young even before we buy them.... Goldfish especially in cooler water find it very hard to digest proteins and high protein diets can actually cause alot of problems anyway nice tanks bye

Hi I am unable to upgrade my tank because of floor issues and I have 4 orandas and 3 fantail goldfish in a 40 gallon they have been in that for a few months and I was worried about stunting them. I don’t know if the damaged is already done because they have grown at least and inch each so I wasn’t sure if I should be concerned. These guys I love so much I will feed them 3-4 times a day with bloodworms, Repashy oranda food and hikari orandas gold they always eat it all so i think I am feeding them enough. I love them so any tips I would appreciate

Aren’t most pet goldfish stunted to some degree unless they’re in a huge pond? There’s no evidence that stunting hurts their health anyway unless the stunting is due to a lack of nutrition.

    • @aquastar4336

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me with a question about my one of my orandas, I have had goldfish for a long time over the years and it has been a learning experience over the years, but I one fish that had what it looked like some wen growth on his head, so when I went to look at it closer and picked him up, in my hands and just touched it a white film came out of it like if you were to pop a pimple or something, so I put him in a bucket of tank water and started to push on it very slowly and it keep coming out like a miky kinda tuff, he doesn't seem sick, I been trying to ask around o what it might be , but haven't had any luck, I checked all my reading gs in the tank and all is good , I have just never seen any thing like it before , any advice would help or if you have any idea what it could be so that I can treat it as with what,,, everyone else in the tank is doing fine he is in a 75 gallon tank with only 3 others his kind , thank you

    • @aquastar4336
      @aquastar4336  5 лет назад +1

Hi Lisa! It's only wen growth!! You can put him back into his normal tank and keep doing what you're doing. Maybree had same thing. White stringy stuff. It is uncommon.. but it IS just wen growth. Usually.. wen growth is just a little white pimple. But sometimes you might see something stringy coming out of it.
