It is so great comparison! You've covered all possible features. Although notability has much more customisation features, good notes is still my winner, because I hate subscriptions in such applications. Excellent work!
The notability organizational structure is so minimalistic and puts function over aesthetic which is something I personally love. I enjoy how easy it is to navigate. GoodNotes has a more intuitive interface and has a premium feeling UI but I just hate how it’s structured and you can be 5 layers deep without having a visualization of the path like you do in notability
Notability is best for annotating presentations, lectures (ppt from professors) text books, reading, etc. GoodNotes is perfect as a notebook & digital planer GoodNotes will win a landslide if they have a favorites feature, note switcher, and by retaining the page size when you import pdf.
Thanks for the comparison. I’ve noticed with a lot of these videos, most of what I’ve watched came from people who were more so good notes users, and mentioned things that GoodNotes does, but notability doesn’t, however, notability does do the things they said it couldn’t, they just didn’t know how to. This video in my opinion was a fair comparison. I too switch between both, and have gotten more used to notability, but I would really like to master both, as there are some features one has that the other doesn’t. Being that you can import documents from one to another, I might use one for certain things, import to the other, and use the remaining features the other doesn’t have. Sounds like a lot of work, but hey, what ever works best for you, do it. I, like most people, wish there was one app that did it all, and is available on all platforms. I like Samsung note for my phone, iPad for tablet and windows for computer. I did come across Penbook which works for all 3, but it has so much going on, it’ll take some time too learn.
First off, thank you so much I really appreciate the kind words :). But yes I completely agree, I also wish there was an all encompassing application that was also cross platform. You might have just thought of the next billion dollar idea 😉
The recording feature in NB is hands down a game changer. I think maybe you’re asking too much of an application such as this on a device, such as an iPad to do more than what it’s capable of recording, a lecture in a large lecture hall from a distance. At least for me, sitting in the front row, and having the ability to review my notes coordinated with the lecture is an unbelievable feature that keeps me coming back to Notability. Apple….. what were you thinking?
I can definitely appreciate this feature. I guess I never needed it for my studying purposes. So it was easier for me to critique. But I can definitely see how this feature can be a GAME CHANGER for other people! And sitting in the front row of class where you are the closest to the professor and won't pickup other people talking in front of you will definitely help make this feature work better!
I´ll switch from goodnotes to notability now. It´s the little things that annoy me. The quick access to more than 3 pencil colors, the "duplicate" in the lasso tool (in goodnotes u have to "copy" -> hold with finger -> "paste"). Things that take 1sec more all study life long annoy me. Especially when u try to catch up with fast profs, without having ugly notes. AND. notability can convert handwritten formulas into printed style. Lit feature for me in an engineering master.
I agree the small quality of life features notability offers is honestly something that keeps bringing me back to their application! Tough to leave those once you get used to them.

20:25 with the new ipad os feature that brings suport for external displays, the multitasking management of goodnotes is more useful as it lets you have an open note on the ipad screen while having another one on the external display.
Notability now has the Tape function (hidden behind highlighter tool). Similar to flashcards. It's good. In Goodnotes we still cannot fill an object with a color of our choice.
Great job with the video. I think Notability disables the backup functionality without a subscription. 😮 seems like you could loose everything if you accidentally let your subscription lapse.

Excellent video. A very comprehensive shoutout to all the important features of both apps. I’d suggest making a video for Apple Notes as well, because many new iPad users can try out the “default” and free note taking app, before going and purchasing any of these expensive apps. As for myself, I bought Notability 3 years back and have the classic version now. I tried Good Notes 5 recently when they made the app free for the first 3 books. I have to say, there are certain specific things Notability does, that I can’t imagine using a note taking app without. The seamless pages, automatic adding pages, favourites bar for certain pens and highlighters, vertical split of two notes (thank you Notability, I use my iPad vertically and referencing a note or PDF above while writing on another one below, keeping my writing habit and aspect ratio consistent is such a useful feature!), the ability to switch between subjects and dividers while having the notes on the right (similar to Apple Notes), I create many tables in handwritten notes and it is so much easier to do so with the draw and hold while also having perfect horizontal or vertical lines and syncing two lines of different lengths by their midpoints (incredibly useful while making flow charts) etc. Some of these features can or may work in Good Notes for sure, but it’s just so much easier and short stepped process to do so in Notability. Or I’m just too used to Notability. One thing I would like to see Notability adapt from Good Notes 5 is the sort of Index creator for a note (I write hundreds of pages of notes in a single document and bookmarking sort of helps, but would love to see a proper indexing which I can skip directly to) and another feature from Apple Notes is the ability to “insert space” wherever you want on a handwritten note. Those two features will make Notability, the perfect app unless you want specific features such as Presentation modes and Laser pointers and Book covers etc. I’m not collaborative in my studying process hence all those features don’t really matter to me. Thank you for such an informative video!
First off, thank you so much for the kind words! :) Secondly, I completely agree with how great Notability is. It's very user friendly and has so many quality of life features that you don't realize how great they are until you try another application. And that's a good idea, I'll definitely look into Apple Notes app and see if it's worth a video of this caliber for as well. When I first got to college I used Microsoft OneNote for almost 2 years and that also has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Maybe one huge comparison between all 4? 🤔
I really liked your video, my notability yearly subscription is ending soon and It really frustrates me how they up the price from 8.99 to 11.99 for a year so I was looking for alternative choices. Keep up the good work.💙
I don't know but I feel like goodnotes is a bit like children note taking app but notability is also good.l started with goodnotes when I first got my iPad but I changed my mind
This video was super detailed and really helpful, thanks for all the time and hard work you put in to creating it! I have read that the Lasso feature for Notability only works with handwritten notes while Goodnotes allows the Lasso feature to work on more like handwritten notes, images, various texts, etc - is this what you’ve found as well? Also with advanced math classes doesn’t Notability have a useful math conversion feature that Goodnotes does not?
Thank you I really tried to cover everything with these two applications. And yes that is true, the lasso tool does not work with text in notability but it does in GoodNotes 5, I did not know that before :). And also with the conversion tool in Notability, once you start getting to really complex math with triple integrals and derivatives/partial derivatives or differential equations, it stop working as well. You also would need to make sure you handwriting is very neat and clear for notability to even attempt to convert. I think it is best used for simple math equations.
Idk man after using good notes for more than 6 months I used notability it's better than good notes in every aspect If you are a student try using notability it's better believe me
I think since making this video GN5 is now better 😂 Notability is even more expensive and GN5 just added in more than 3 pre-saved colors so it’s about even with the Notability Favorites bar
This video is just in time for my classes to start next week. I just bought an iPad Air, and I was trying to decide which of the two note taking apps to try out. Thanks for the comparison!
High quality stuff brother. I’ve seen quite a few of these comparisons and not only is your structuring better but it also has that intimate quality like you’re talking to your friends and not a bunch of strangers on the internet lol Keep it up man, you’ll be big time one day I’m sure of it.
Had both got rid of Notability cause of the pricing vs features. One price for 90% of the same features and I like how my notes look on GoodNotes. Also weirdly realised I was using GoodNotes more often. My alternative now is Microsoft OneNote which sync up with PC. Notability “hype” good, but not a yearly sub good.
Yah I can agree, you get almost everything Notability offers but for a fraction of the price especially if you know you will be using the application for years to come.
Excellent comparison. Very well done. As a 5 year + Notability user I learned a few more bits and pieces from you. I've tried Goodnotes 5 recently and found it a little clunky for me in comparison. Having had Notability so long using Goodnotes was always going to feel 'different". New note-takers won't have my bias. I use Notability Classic for all sorts of household record keeping, eg: house maintenance, garden, car, m'bike, family health, dog etc. Also doodling, diagrams, planning, calculating, PDF keeping and signing and more. Wouldn't be without it. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much I appreciate the kind words! And having the "classic" version is honestly so great because I really don't need the premium features and I'm not limited with the free features.
I’d love to hear a follow up review on how it went for the full semester using Good Notes and if it met your expectations and where it fell short. Great review video,
That's a good idea, honestly didn't think of this as an option but I can definitely see how this would help with the recording problems I faced! Thank you for the idea :)
Thanks for the detailed analysis. This was really great. I've been using Goodnotes for a while now and was considering whether to get Notability. But, I'll stick to Goodnotes. :)
Thank you I really appreciate it :) And yah, if you already found your way into Goodnotes 5 then there's no reason to start paying for a subscription service and have to learn a whole new application. The differences are minor and just comes down to personal preference!
It’s because we don’t want to waste our time to find what we wrote 2 years ago. And I hope Apple would allow the app to use spotlight. It would be much easier to find something.
I really like this video and Im going to get both app for different purposes, notability for education and taking notes and good notes to have my agenda and planner, do you know about new features since you make this video I saw the prices have changed also.
I used to use one, it was a matte screen protector and worked well. It made the writing experience feel more like pen and paper. I stopped using it because my own personal Apple Pencil doesn't have the best palm rejection and I felt the screen protector made it slightly worse. But that is my experience and don't think it's the same throughout.
I’m glad I did! This video is outdated and there has been changes to both apps over the past year. Im going to make an updated video soon so stay tuned for that! :)
I liked your review alot, thank you. What did disappoint me at the end was: you make a very awesome comparison between the point of view, but you don't take a side at the end. Kind regards, nice day!
Hi Pieter! Thank you for the comment, and I understand completely where you’re coming from as regards to the ending. Since I made that video there have been some updates to both applications, and some serious ones. Notability is now $15.99 a year so it’s price has increased. AND GoodNotes 5 just added the ability to save way more than just 3 colors in the quick menu bar. These two reasons alone make me believe GoodNotes 5 is the overall better app! Hope this helps :)
Wow. I mean if GoodNotes 5 stays a one time purchase of $8.99 then I think it is now probably the better note-taking app, especially since they just added more than 3 quick access colors!!!!
@@NathanLemoine no doubt for a one time charge...heck, do both if you want what Noteabiltiy brings to the table....I have simple demands, so One Note value rules.
Brilliant comparison. I have used Notability for a couple of years. I bought it when it had a one off fee. I have tried many others, but I find this the easiest and also the most functional for my needs.
It didn't appear for me until I uploaded my first note to the community (which can be found in the export section in a document). Try doing that then you should see the community tab pop up. Hope this solves your problem!
Hi no worries! I did use a matte screen protector that I got on amazon in a 3 pack for around $10. I have never used a PaperLike screen protector because some reviews I have seen make it sound like it's not worth the 3-4x price. I currently do not use a screen protector, not because I don't like them, I actually really do. But I think something is wrong with my Apple Pencil where it does not have good palm rejection and it really messes up my handwriting. Before I knew it was my pencil, I thought it might have been the screen protector so I took it off to test and I just have not gotten a new one. But I do recommend any matte screen protector as they do make the writing experience a little more enjoyable :)
Nathan, do you know how I can get it? I've emailed Goodnotes and sent a message via Facebook and no reply. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and signed in with my school email and nothing.
For me personally, I had to upload my first document to the community section (found in the export button inside of a document) and then the general Community section appeared in the main area of the application. Also, do you have the paid or free version of Good Notes 5, that could be a reason why you might not have it if you use the free version.
Honestly, I don't currently use one. I used to use these cheap matte screen protectors I found on amazon in a 3 pack for less than $10 and it worked well for a while. I ended up taking it off because the nature of matte screen protectors you lose a tiny bit of clarity because of the non-reflective film. I used to edit my videos on my iPad and I wanted the best quality while doing that so I took it off and just haven't bought new ones yet. But most screen protectors work the same and I'd recommend a cheap 2-3 pack on amazon so after a few months you can replace it for a new one!
Not specifically in their own templates, but there are many types of flashcards in Notability's Gallery. You will be able to find some there but I think they're just the dimensions of a flashcard and you won't be able to flip them from front to back like other applications.
It is so great comparison! You've covered all possible features. Although notability has much more customisation features, good notes is still my winner, because I hate subscriptions in such applications. Excellent work!

I really like this video and Im going to get both app for different purposes, notability for education and taking notes and good notes to have my agenda and planner, do you know about new features since you make this video I saw the prices have changed also.
That’s definitely the best comparison i’ve seen. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Trying to give everyone the best overview I can :)
Thank you very much
You're very welcome :)
thanks!!!!
You're very welcome! :)
Thanks :)
This is a really good comparison. Thank you!
Thank you! Glad to have helped :)
help to understand to choose according to my need👍👍👍 thanks
do you use a screen protector?
I used to use one, it was a matte screen protector and worked well. It made the writing experience feel more like pen and paper. I stopped using it because my own personal Apple Pencil doesn't have the best palm rejection and I felt the screen protector made it slightly worse. But that is my experience and don't think it's the same throughout.
Thank you for the comparison 😊
You’re welcome!!!
Good n o t e s
So positive! Pleasant to watch, thank you ❤
I’m glad you thought so! My pleasure 😇
Thanks for such a detailed video, helped a lot!
Im glad it did! Best of luck with whichever you decided on :)
Good video! You helped me make my decision
I’m glad I did! This video is outdated and there has been changes to both apps over the past year. Im going to make an updated video soon so stay tuned for that! :)
Hello! Tell me please how to turn the view mode on. I mean how move the top menu away so we can see the document only. Without any buttons
For me Goodnotes all the way as it has a Lifetime Subscription option. Great video tho 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The one time payment really does make a huge difference hahah. Thank you though I really appreciate it :)
How much space does notability and good notes 5 use overtime the more notes you take? Right now I have an iPad Pro 9.7” 2016 model 32gb.
Goodnotes needs a lot more space
@@VideoplayerE ok thank you! I just got a iPad Pro 11 inch 4th gen 256GB and started using office 365 with one note.
In Comparison I user Notability for 3 Years and all in all its about 1 gb. Since to Years I Use Goodnotes and it uses 2,6 gb
@@VideoplayerE is that tons of notes and folders. 1GB is pretty small for taking notes over a 3 year period.
@@charlescaulk4949 Yes its not much, i Use it for studying
Finallyyy🎉
Comprehensive review! Thanks a lot.
Thank you, I tried my best :)
this was super helpful, thank you!!!!
You're very welcome Lucy! :)
Amazing comparison! Thank you, friend.
Thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot to me 🥹 you’re very welcome!
@@NathanLemoine btw I bought goodnotes 5 ✌️
@@NathanLemoine GoodNotes 5 it is! I am ready to go on adventure now. Thanks, I appreciate this alot!
omg this video was amazing! answered all the questions i needed
Thank you so much, glad it helped you out :) Which one are you going withy?
As of today, 2/23/23 Notability is now $15.99 per year.
Thank you I really appreciate the kind words :) And I do love Notability as well. Great, great app!
Nathan this video is amazing, thank you for your help. Greetings from Peru.
Thank you so much, I'm glad I was able to help! And ayeee shoutout to Peru!! 🇵🇪
You really made it easier for me to decide:) thank you
Anytime, Glad I helped :)
Great informative video !
Wait you go to SU too?!!!
Haha yes I do! In my last semester as a graduate student here
Great comparison! Well done!!
Thank you!!
HI @Natham Lemoine for some reason I dont have the Community tab in GoodNotes 5. Did they take out that feature?
It didn't appear for me until I uploaded my first note to the community (which can be found in the export section in a document). Try doing that then you should see the community tab pop up. Hope this solves your problem!
nice job
Thank you Matt :)
Sorry for the random question but do you use screen protector of any kind or paper feel protector for note taking?x
I want just 1 feature to goodnotes
GIF support
Great video 😊 thanks
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support 😊
The contribute to common doesn’t show up for me and my app is up to date. I have an iPad Pro 11” newest edition.
Also, do you have the paid or free version of Good Notes 5, that could be a reason why you might not have it if you use the free version.
good job
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words :)
You’re so cute ❤
Thank you 😊
notability is now 14.99 -_-
They really not happy about GN5 winning app of the year 😭
Idk what do they want to achieve by inc pricing. More people will join gn now.
Exactly, the difference in price between the two is kinda crazy now 😅
Which screen protector do you use?
Honestly, I don't currently use one. I used to use these cheap matte screen protectors I found on amazon in a 3 pack for less than $10 and it worked well for a while. I ended up taking it off because the nature of matte screen protectors you lose a tiny bit of clarity because of the non-reflective film. I used to edit my videos on my iPad and I wanted the best quality while doing that so I took it off and just haven't bought new ones yet. But most screen protectors work the same and I'd recommend a cheap 2-3 pack on amazon so after a few months you can replace it for a new one!
@@NathanLemoine Thank you! ;D
Between Apple Notes and Apple Pages that’s good enough for 99% of all students. And they’re free.
Amazing explanation bro👍👍it’s really helpful 😊 thank you ☺️ love and support from 🇮🇳🇮🇳India
Really appreciate it Yatri! Shoutout to India :)
this is an obviously biased comparison when it’s supposed to be a helpful video to help you decide which one you want im assuming
I was trying to go over them objectively in this video. But just out of curiosity, which app do you think I have a bias towards?
Not saying this but his commentary sounds like he was paid by notability
I had about 1,000 subscribers when I made that video. Promise you I was not. And at the end I decide on going with GoodNotes 5 for my next semester
What u didn’t mention was and is a big deal in my learning process at least. Does notability have the flash card template for notebooks?
Not specifically in their own templates, but there are many types of flashcards in Notability's Gallery. You will be able to find some there but I think they're just the dimensions of a flashcard and you won't be able to flip them from front to back like other applications.
There's always Quizlet! You don't need the Quizlet subscription to make flashcards!
Great video .Thank you Nathan!
You're very welcome! I appreciate the support :)
