I live in the UK and remember watching American shows as a child, being completely horrified at people eating massive bags of crisps and pints of icecream, or enormous sodas. Now it is commonplace in england and people think Im a bit weird when I ask how big my cup of coffee is going to be in a cafe...I cant stand massive cups or portions of anything but am made to feel like I'm a bit weird 😂....when I go to France or Italy I feel normal.

Totally with you on this one. I live in London and know precisely where you are coming from. But then the UK always tends to copy the trends that come from the US. What I always find astonishing is some of the 'what I eat in a day' content that comes out of the US. So many who start with 'a balanced lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle', a sentiment I agree with entirely, but then some proceed to just consume what I would describe as absolute mountains of food under the proviso that they do not restrict themselves at all and are just guided by their instincts - and again, I believe in not restricting and the message resonates - but overeating isn't the answer either in my view.

I’m in the UK and recently saw a chef programme where he was in Provence. He went to a primary school where the children were given a totally balanced 3 course lunch, based around organic vegetables and fruit, which is monitored by a dietitian. They are encouraged to appreciate the culture of French cuisine and eat with their peers. Water is the only drink offered. My English grandchildren are given chicken nuggets or fish fingers at school, for the same price. Unfortunately, the UK has tended to follow the American model, the result being we are a very sick nation.😢

Never before in history have we had such an abundance of food available 24 hours a day. Add to that the invention of processed and snack foods, it has had a profound impact on our weight. It appears the French way of eating is more whole food based and not full of snacks, sodas and fast food like here in America. Diet culture and eating disorders in America is an epidemic and basically theirs products and services to “support” every diet customer $$$.

Very interesting videos. From living in France I know that what is considered normal sized in my home country (Netherlands), is definitely considered chubby in France. The French beauty standard is Parisian chic I feel, with slender figures and elegant clothing. What in the Netherlands would be considered borderline anorexic (as we are typically a bit heavier built), is pretty normal to see in France when it comes to slimness. You see 'maigrir'/regime cover magazines all the time in the supermarkets; telling readers in bold letters how to lose weight. One other thing that is very very striking indeed to me: as healthy as many French tend to eat, they SMOKE a lot more than where I come from. I find this hard to combine with healthy living and the lung cancer statistics are quite high in France, unfortunately.

As someone who also grew up with a French mother and also spent a lot of time there growing up, I think the mentality around food is completely different. Food is ate to be enjoyed. Not only that but access to fresh produce is much easier, they don’t eat processed foods like Americans and the portions are totally different.
A well balanced diet is engrained in kids from a very young age. Could you imagine if kids went home for lunch in the US?? I also think how slowly people eat aids in digestion. People are constantly annoyed with how long it takes me to eat my meals.
Also, European people tend to walk far more than Americans. Owning a car for me isn’t an option. But I could live my entire life without one in nearly every European country.

I live in the US and work for a French small business, my boss is French. When I eat on my breaks at work, which I have twice - around 9 am and then around 2 pm, which I do get hungry for and I think these are normal times for breakfast and lunch - she often says: « You know you don’t have to eat, right?? » « So you don’t need to eat in the evening because you already eat twice during the day, you ate two meals!! »
I used to have an eating disorder and now eating intuitively but these comments can definitely affect me negatively.

Perfectly normal times to eat meals! I am also recovered and I eat 3 meals at 2-3 snacks everyday since I am actually hungry for them. There no "wrong amount" of times to eat if you are listening to your hunger cues!

Ive been living in France for about 3 years now and I totally agree that there seems to be a lot less guilt around eating but I’ve met French people who will just stop eating one day of the week when they feel like they’ve put on some weight. There seems to be a lot more self control

Will start by saying I love your content, but from what I hear form your video as well as what I know from Eastern Europe, diet culture exists. This is a complex topic.
I do live in North America and food education is necessary, but diet culture at different levels is in both continents and understood differently.

  • @MiaK06

I would say that diet culture is much more prevalent in the US than Europe. The French I have always found have one of the most common sense approaches to food.
Interestingly also, as someone who grew up in Austria and Germany and arrived in the US at age 18, I have never seen obesity to the extent that I have seen it in America.
Single most glaring differences to me between Europe and the US is that in the US all foods are categorised by protein carbs and fats / all is full of artificial ingredients and some of the diets coming out of the US are just ludicrous - latest craze seemingly be the Carnivore diet
During the times I lived there we had all from the Zone to Southbeach to Atkins etc
I remember in the low fat craze also buying mountains of ‘Snackwell lights’, thinking it was much better cause less fat…
Also, portion sizes in the US are just out of control; not to mention the ‘all you can eat’ buffets and places
The whole concept in France and broader Europe of just stopping when you are full, eating slowly, enjoying food w family etc is also to many a foreign concept
Working in NY, we have all perfected the quick sandwich or bite at your desk at lunch followed then by massive dinners at night. I can’t remember a time when in the US, I actually sat down to eat lunch properly…
So I think diet culture as a whole in the US is much more developed, the attitude of Americans towards food is a bit off in my humble opinion and as a result, we have obesity in the US that is not as prevalent in France and other European countries
Approach in France just more normal and common sensical, from proper meals and meal sizes to low intensity exercise to a plain and simply joie de vivre that the US (and I love it and it will always be my second home) could learn a thing or two from.

Thank you for asking this ❤ Like most of my family I'm short and muscular with lots of extra fat. I have photos of my relatives from 100 years ago who are very overweight. The were farmers and ranchers who were active all day every day. They ate lots of vegetables and fruit with no processed foods other than some homemade bread.

@tinkershell1856 I'm in that boat too. My great-grandmother was quite overweight in the early 20th century and they did not have the ability to over eat even if they wanted to. I wonder though if some of my family has a wheat allergy going back a ways. I'm just trying to figure it out

is French diet heathier than in the USA? I do not really think so. French eat tons of carbohydrates...maybe not as potato chips but still it is pretty unhealthy...breakfasts are loaded with sugar and having a late night supper is awful. I am on keto and I am trying to have my man to switch to keto completely. It is challenging for him in France. keto is not a diet. it is a different lifestyle.
