This was a Great video to watch with the commentary! I am 65 now in 2024. In 1963, I was only 4 years old. Henry Cooper has become real to me now. This bout got submerged and buried over history, probably by Muhammed himself. A fight in his YOUTH, that he'd like to forget. Closing my eyes, it looked like Sugar Ray Robinson vs LaMotta. Cooper's mean hard left hook that sent Ali very solidly down should never be forgotten or smoothed over and lost historically. Ali was a boxing technician and could take blows others could not. He was not a brawler and Henry Cooper that day, minus the bad eye cuts, proved that one hard solid punch does have the potential to get you the win. Ali and Dundee worked some magic that night. Ali and Dundee did get some Luck that night, and luckily it helped save the tarnish and stain of a loss. Thanks for helping save history by this video. Henry Cooper deserves that.
There was no animosity between Ali ( Clay back then ) & Cooper. Henry was the massive underdog going into this fight, but he was no mug. If Henry had have dropped the big left hook ( Henry’s Hammer ) 30 seconds earlier Ali would have lost. Ali had time to recover and came back and cut Henry . Years later Angelo Dundee admitted that he’d bought his man more time by splitting the glove. But Cooper and Ali became friends. God bless both of them. 👍
I'd seen that 1st fight a couple times mostly snippets - but never knew of Henry's 'Left Hook Specialist' moniker - he had a quick lunging hook, hard to dodge, especially when doubling & Tripling-up! He punched Hard. Too bad the cut was so deep, because ALI (then Clay) had that near-KO he got hit with from two left hooks, and saved by the bell, then Dundee's 'torn glove' intervening, helped him recover as Ali admits, otherwise history might have spun the legacy different
This is really old and needs to be finally put to bed. Yes Ali was caught napping, and he got caught. Big deal. He ripped Cooper apart in the next round and the referee stopped the fight. Then, the excuses roll out. Dundee ripped open a slight tear to buy Ali more time to “recover”while a new pair of gloves were found etc. etc. and the myth is born, that Copper could’ve knocked out Ali. Really?? Ali who took the blows of some of the hardest punchers in boxing history like Frazier, Forman, Shavers, Norton, all of whom could not knock Ali out…. Would’ve been knocked out by 13.5 stones Henry Cooper? Anyone that closely followed Ali’s career, knows he was the consummate showman and would heap praise on lesser opponents. Ali even said once that lumbering, Joe Bugner would be world champion one day. It’s just pure joking for the cameras and the press. Cooper was a journeyman British fighter who got knocked out by a shot Floyd Patterson and an average Zara Foley. And those of you out there who are students of the sweet science know that both Patterson and Foley were obliterated by Ali. Cooper was forever grateful for Ali snoozing in round 4 and getting caught by Henry’s “hammer”, because when Cooper retired he went on TV interviews constantly talking about it, guested on quiz shows, was an ambassador for Brut aftershave and had all other endorsements. Yeah, he got lucky and did ok after he retired. Good for him. End of. He could never have beaten Ali, when greater fighters than Cooper failed. So let this myth end once and for all.
I don't know why the British make such a big deal out of Henry Cooper's lucky punch a lucky punch Ali called around and beat his ass in that round. Henry Cooper wouldn't go nowhere near Sonny just one lucky punch, the world knew what we had witness and awkward Henry Cooper swinging for the bleachers with his eye hanging out of his head and the crowd going wild as that right eye poured blood.
That fight wasn't close at all cassius clay was hitting Doug Jones 5 times to his 2 or 1,clay's speedy razor sharp lefts and rights was too much for Doug's no affected ponderous flat footed punches.I saw that fight.
Ali was clearly the better fighter, but just like Cooper implied, he got over confident and dropped his guard. Though not the class of fighter that Ali was, Cooper was no slouch and you don't dare drop your guard against him.
Yeah but from the start when he was holding Ali's arm and punching him and when Ali complained about it he tried to steal another punch, I guess by you wanting your boy to win so bad you wouldn't view that as cheating, bottom line, (he started by cheating, and Ali finished by beating) it's the end results that counts (RED WATERFALL OVER THE EYE,) SEE YA!!!

They were in Wembley stadium in the heart of London with a British referee, duh.
Ali complaining in 1st round but really Ali the master of holding all his boxing career can't complain
Cooper was holding and hitting. There's a DIFFERENCE.
These guys remained life-long friends.
Ali was still called Clay he shouldn't have but i now see he was being mercy full to his opponent Cooper.
Thanks
The best of them can be knocked down its what they do after they get back up is what counts

Ahhhhh man i liked how this man talked.
Love seeing the arrogance knocked out of Ali. The most annoying and arrogant athlete ever.
Ali was never in danger of losing that fight.
Never knocked Cooper down, quite telling
Ahhhhh stuff .that hook glad i was able to re watch this .
Yeah, but your boy wasn't able to see at the end, (RED WATERFALL OVER THE EYE) SEE YA!!! 😂😅😊
Ali caught napping and Cooper left a rude awakening
nice one))
But still didn't win, and that's what counts, (RED WATERFALL OVER THE EYE), RUDE SLEEPERNING 🥴🥴😵🥱
Thats not napping
But who was loughing at the end .....heh ....that is what is really matters incase you don,t release that
ALI WON THE FIGHT IN THE FIFTH ROUND, PERIOD!!!
Cooper fought gallantly till the end.
Look at Cooper's and Ali's face after the fight. There should be no doubt who won the fight.

Second knockdown in Muhammad Ali career
YEP, DOUG BANKS CLIPPED HIM FIRST .

And still another win (RED WATERFALL OVER THE EYE), SEE YA!!!
Cooper was a dirty fighter 😂
Who was Cooper or scooter, don't condemn or compare some scooper to the GOAT

Nothing came close to the American. 🇺🇲
I didn't know illegal ammonia based smelling salts used in Ali's corner.
Thats how he was able to win and Dundee later admitted he split Ali's glove to buy him more time!!!
@@FrankArce-of7zu Pretty sad situation for boxing and Henry Cooper.
@@brianguglielmin2873If Cooper had landed that punch just a few seconds sooner , Ali would not have been saved by the bell!!!
@@FrankArce-of7zu Thats for sure👍
@@FrankArce-of7zuhe wasn't hurt which means it would've made no difference
Using amonion smelling salt was not illegal, what was this narrator talking about they all did,so no different in this clay vs cooper 1st fight

Grande Cooper
Yeah that hook
😊
,😊
Down goes Frazier Down goes Clay Down goes Clay 😮
But who was the winer
A full minute 40 seconds, that's beating Copper, that's cheating. Plus Dundee admitted it! There's your " Greatest ".
He was the greatest period. Live wth it. Ali didn't need to cheat em to beat em.

Cooper had a chance in the rematch and lost again
@@spenser6353 true
Reality. The extra time was 6 seconds.
Remember coop was robbed with the gloves incident
Henry was alright
Ali was not the greatest
I never saw Muhammad Ali as a champion, but rather more of a clown.
You need to get stronger glasses.
U need to wake up buddy
