  • This is a pen that reminds me of childhood. I remember so many adults who used a Jotter. I picked one up recently with a stainless steel barrel with gold-tone pocket clip. This retractable ballpoint pen came with a medium point blue ink cartridge. This pen was made in France.

I used this pen in middle school because of the goldeneye movie, so it is a classic. My mom always used/ gave me cross century pens, but I still go for parker for work use.

I bought mine couple months ago and I like the look and writing. However, it will dry out temporarily if not writing for about 10 mins. Is it normal for Quink flow or should I replace the refill?

My grandfather used Parker Jotters. He had a drawer full of the early ones with nylon lower barrels and pre arrow clips. I have a small Jotter collection which includes a Pax Jotter from Hungary. It has a clip that resembles a man's dress tie. I prefer the plastic lower half. I find the narrow all steel very slippery.

I have recently swapped the refill for a schmidt easy flow 9000m and it's brilliant so smooth and a much more deep colour blue than the washed out looking quinkflow ink, i highly recommend it.

It's a relic from a time when form followed function, that somehow survived the test of time in today's world of "fancy" and sparkly nonsense. Functional, simple, cheap enough, durable, idiot-proof.
A few years ago, after a no-name pen just shattered in my hands when writing, I had enough and immediately opened a web page of an online store to look for anything that is at least not-trash quality. As you can imagine, our office, as everyone else focuses more on expense cutting as far as office supplies are concerned, but it is a slipery slope and sooner or later you reach a point when crap pens that are uncomfortable, don't write properly, break, etc. and see-through copy paper....
Anyway, a few minutes browsing and I saw the Jotter. You have to understand I grew up on the other side of the cutain of the Cold War and we had no Parker over there. So I had no idea who Parker is and didn't know the Jotter's reputation. BUT, I immediately recognized the shape it because we had "our version" - the KOOH-I-NOOR 5850 , which was rare and I am guessing reserved for the "select few", while us peasant students were given simpler pens... So I bought the Jotter and it was my first pen that you could put in the same sentance with "quality". Later I gave it to a relative and she gave me in return that same holy-grail KOOH-I-NOOR 5850 that we craved so much but could not have while growing up. The two pens are almost identical, use the same Parker style G2 cartridge etc, with some very subtle differences. So I guess you can call it a universal success. Everyone around the globe was using it and for a good reason. I still use that pen and I am definitely passing it to my kids/nephews if any of them cares about such things when the time comes.
I now have several Jotters (just ordered another one on Black Friday for the heck of it) and many other better pens and I refuse to use any cheap crap to write anymore. I've had enough. Had people call me elitist and other things, have had a few "oh-you-are-that-kind-of-person" looks in the bank when I pull up my own pen instead of the one they offer me, but I don't care.
The Jotter is not the best pen out there but it is more than good enough and has a special place in my heart. It was the one that liberated me from the shovelware trash that people use daily and don't seem to mind because they don't know better. In the digital age we are heading, youngsters get a basic schooling in writing and do it for a few years before they get their smartphone and laptop and likely never touch a pen again. But can you blame them ? I see parents buying only the cheapest pens in the largest packs they can find for their kids, left and right.... Why? Maybe if they had a better one from the start, some of them will keep on writing on occasion, because they like it and avert their gaze from the screen in front of them for a split second (imagine lol). When they DO write, the writing is a proper "doctor-style" ugly and incomprehensible for the most part - they don't simply care. I recently learnt that they are not tought even basic calligraphy (?, the art of proper beautiful writing) in schools anymore. Seeing your beautiful handwriting (kudos for that btw) struck a nerve in me and reminded me of the countless hours I spent trying to write properly and as pretty as possible. It was required in school back then. While I never truely achieved it, I got close and I am stunned to see my handwriting looking like a masterpeice compared to what kids scribble on the paper these days. Talk about a lost art....
Anyways, sorry for the long post, thought I'd share another look at the Jotter from the other side of the curtain. Maybe it was interesting. :)

Hi tusux - very interesting post and thanks for sharing your story! The Jotter is one of those thing that - while not the very best - has stood the test of time because of it's overall design and quality. Thanks!

I love the story, mine is close about my bad penmanship and not being able to get it corrected too much for me, at least. I have delved into the world of Fountain Pens. I am not sure if that is going to help either. I agree about the kids. Get them off the cell phones and not be so lazy, and figure out how to spell too. It will come back to haunt them when they are embarrassed by a friend or colleague like it has happened to me so many times about my bad penmanship.
Kids need to start out with Fountain Pens like they do in Germany with the Lamy's. I wish our school system in the USA did that for us when I was growing up. Thank You! Tusux.

Nice review, nice pen. I find your handwriting to be very similar to mine - especially these capital F's. English is not my first language so learning cursive was my personal intent, I find the exemplars from "The Arm Movement Method of Rapid Writing" to be the most beautiful and the book even has some letter variations. Would be interesting to know what textbook on writing did you study from.

Hi and thank you! It is a nice pen and I enjoy writing with it. I was taught cursive handwriting in grade school - starting in second and third grade (ages 7 and 8). The lessons learned well over 50 years ago continue to influence the way that I write. My teachers were very particular about penmanship, and we had a lot of writing practices. I don't recall ever having a writing book. Thanks!

    ESSAY ALERT 🚨
Mid 60-year-old, always a pen fanatic, I recently came across a website all about the history of Parker pens. I’m sure fans of Parker know of this website.
I remembered I had bought a Jotter in the early 90s, replaced the cartridge with a bold cartridge, didn’t like the way it wrote particularly and so threw it in a box where it has been for decades. Website gave date codes so recently I found and dated my old black jotter to sometime in 1991. Decided to refill that jotter with a modern jotter refill, which I am assuming is their best work on the ink so far. Enjoying the way it writes, decided to purchase a new Jotter XL, and I really like this one which is perfect for my large hand.
Was in thrift store recently, came across a bag of old pens and pencils, looked at this bag, and to my amazement saw a stainless steel Jotter! The whole bag sold for around two dollars, threw away all the other cheap no-name pens, pencils, and kept the jotter. Replaced the cartridge with a fine point. What a thrift store find that was! So I use my old black Jotter and my new Jotter XL and the thrift store stainless steel Jotter and I’m happy as a clam now.
The Jotter stainless steel date code worked out to be about 1991 as well. Both were made in the USA, the new Parker XL was made in France. Does anybody know if the original is made in Janesville? How many other factories does Parker have in the USA? Happy writing!
Great video, really enjoyed it. Nice Great Lakes accent too 😉

I just bought one a couple of months ago, never had one. It is the XL 1.0 mm Black Matte. Mine came from France 2021 all real metal even inside where the threads are. I was shocked. I was expecting plastic inside. For me it is too slippery to hold and I am not feeling where it is any bigger round than my Paper Mate Double hearts which I really love, and have had since I was 11, the only thing I had to compare it with and looks like a Parker It writes fine, but I expected for a 1.0mm it would have a bolder line. It looks like a 0.7mm. this will take a 1.4 mm refill, I am just trying to run the ink out of this one. I might enjoy it more after changing the refill it came with which was blue ink, I was very happy about that instead of the old standard black.

Hi tbayless - thanks for sharing your thoughts on this pen. A few people have told me that they think the all metal barrel version is a bit slippery to hold and prefer the models that have the plastic lower barrel because they grip better. Hopefully you'll like the bolder line you should get with the 1.4mm refill. Thanks!
