Golden Bear Made in Thailand #2 Pencil Review
Golden Bear pencils have been reviewed on this channel previously, but those were the USA made pencils. Recently I picked up a dozen of the Thailand made Golden Bear pencils in orange from the pencils.com webstore. These are hexagonal wood-barreled pencils with an attached blue eraser. I take a closer look at them here and compare them to the USA made counterparts.

Box of Musgrave Factory Seconds: Seeing what you get in these mystery boxes of pencils
Просмотров 60219 часов назад
I've ordered a good many things from Musgrave Pencil over the years and have often considered picking up a box of their "factory seconds" just to see what would be included. While I was shopping on their website recently, the price of a box (144 pencils) of factory seconds was reduced to $5.00. This prompted my purchase and I was looking forward to seeing the variety of pencils that would be in...
ICO 70 Classic Retro Ballpoint Pen from Hungary Review

This ballpoint pen is manufactured in Hungary by ICO and is the ICO 70 Classic Retro Ballpoint Pen. THANK YOU to Robert in Hungary who sent this my way - I've not seen these available in the US. The pen has a retractable medium point (I believe it is a 0.7mm) and blue ink. The design of the barrel has a great retro look and feel to it and I couldn't wait to try this handsome pen! #ballpointpen ...

It's always exciting when there is a new pencil on the scene, and here's a review of a unique new model that was designed by Oregon architect Jeremy Rear and produced by the Musgrave Pencil Company of Shelbyville, Tennessee. Musgrave Pencil Company of Shelbyville, Tennessee introduced the Songwriter pencil some time ago, but I waited a while before ordering a box. While these pencils would certainly work well for music composition, their 4B graphite core is also good for smooth and bold writing. I also compare the Songwriter pencil to a couple of other Musgrave bold writers: the Test Scoring 100 and 600 News pencil...

Vintage Pencil Review: Eberhard Faber Public #3 Pencil
Oh I got an idea, try reviewing all the Papermate Write Bros pens! There isn’t only Black, Blue, and Red but there are also packs that have Red, Green, Orange, and Purple that are discontinued but are still out there and I have four packs of them!
That is a really nice pen!
I have noticed that there seems to have been a mini-comeback of cedar pencils in the last few years. It seems a lot of pencils will proudly state that they are made of incense cedar like the Bostitch, USA Gold/Titanium, the Golden Bears and many others! On the topic of "Palomino," I belive the brand is quickly being phased out as I never see it on their pencils anymore.
Thanks for the video. I like the look of the pencil.
Only hear the sound of a clock ticking lol
I have ONE of that version left in my house. I don’t know if it even works anymore. It must be at least 30 years old.
Hi GDG94 - this style of Write Bros. pen is getting harder to find. You should try yours - who knows? It might still write!
@ yeah. I’m currently at work, and this pen is somewhere in my office at home. When I get home this evening I will make a video
Thanks for another great review! I had to order a box of Thai/USAs to compare side-by-side, but I don't expect to be able to detect a difference.
You're welcome, moonbastic! The two are fairly close but you may feel a difference. Thanks!
I received a Pencil King instead of a second News 600, maybe some sets are different.
Hi Rhonda - I think they there were a few variations on these sets with different pencils. Thanks!
Noticed your channel just recently crossed 1M views. Congrats!!!
Hi Jeremy! Wow - I hadn't noticed! Thanks for letting me know. Honestly, when I started I wasn't sure if anyone would have interest. I appreciate you watching!
Review an Indian pen like cello finegrip, a very common pen in India🇮🇳
Hi - I reviewed a Cello pen a few years ago. Thanks!
Great review. Golden Bear is actually impressive. Love the color of the Thailand eraser & ferrule. Yep, the USA version is definitely a darker print. Btw, I have come to really appreciate your block eraser videos, as I have rediscovered the benefits of these wonderful analog tools. I caught an Amazon sale for Pentel Hi-Polymer Eraser (ZEH10) which, as you know, is said to be a high quality plastic eraser.made in Taiwan. I use it for removing colored pencil marks in artwork, as well as, every day writing w/the Pentel P207 mechanical pencil 0.7mm. So now, I'm highly interested in acquiring one of the Japanese erasers, bc I'm progressing in my artwork while healing in rehab. Thank you, God bless.
Hi Sallie! Thanks for letting me know the eraser videos have helped you choose tools for your work. The Pentel is a consistently good eraser. You may want to try one of the Japanese foam erasers. I have found them to be excellent on most standard graphite (HB/B/2B). Don't know how they would work on colored pencils. Glad to know you have been finding progress in your art as you recover! Thanks!
Good to see Golden Bear outsourced without letting quality slip. I prefer the audible feedback from the Thai one - the US made one is too quiet to hear.
Hi DFT - yes, these pencils made in Thailand are very good. I've tried others made there that didn't impress me very much, so I was delighted to see how these performed. Thanks!
weird cope
I'm glad that it isn't outsourced in the traditional sense. They still offer the US version which is nice. I like there being the two options.
@ I agree. No issue with outsourcing when there's attention paid to the product and not just the profit. And options are always awesome, and I will defend this hill until I'm bones.
I got a pack of the 0.38mm pens in black, and it blew my mind at how small I could write and it was still readable! Like, health and safety warnings on packaging labels-level small.
Hi Craig - wow, that is pretty small writing! Shows you that a precision tip can really make a difference. Thanks!
Boy, you sound like Tom Sellick.
Some others have said the same thing, but honestly I don't hear that much similarity. Thanks!
I have a question for you. Is there any reason why you don't like fountain pens? Just curious. Also love your content! I go through a marathon watching your stuff whenever I journal or write on my typewriter.
Hi Worrior! Thanks for watching - I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I'm not a fan of fountain pens because of all the mess I make whenever I try using ones. I never fail to get ink all over my fingers and other places. Thanks!
Imma calligraphy proffessinal and i never seen the best writing on earth😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I used Bic ballpoint pens when I was in high school in the 80's. I used them a lot for ACCOUNTING and MATHEMATICS.
Thanks! The fine point Bic pens are perfect for accounting!
In my opinion, these are closer to a firm #1 rather than a #2. I love these pencils. I ended up getting sent 144 rather than the 12 I ordered. I also found that Moon makes a Bare Wood version of this. It isn't branded as a Try Rex and is labelled as triangular, but it is the same shape, albeit, jumbo!
Hi Louie - I find the Try Rex shape to be among the most comfortable of all. I like these pencils, too. Thanks!
I ended up finding some cap erasers by Maped/Helix at my local hobby lobby! They make the pentel and others look so small!
Hi Louie - I have seen those and they are oversized. I think they call them "Professional" cap erasers. Thanks!
How many pencils do you have in your possession now?
Hi Rafael - too many to count! Thanks!
@@AlwaysAnalog then there are not too many😀
I see a Home Depot one.
Hi Russell - yes, Musgrave makes the pencils for Home Depot. Thanks!
*Happy 2025 Kevin!* *I like this pencil though my aversion to pink erasers remains unchallenged. The core seems buttery and smooth that could use a bit more hardness. I'd buy a box if the price was good.*
Happy New Year, Raccoon! This is a lovely pencil. If you ever run across these, they are nice to have. Thanks!
I noticed that the pencils with the indent for the ferrule on the bottom are also the ones that typically are double printed. I love these pencils. My mom ended up getting me 3 boxes for my birthday when they were 5 dollars a box!
Hi Louie! What a great birthday gift! I noticed on their website they are still at $5/box. Thanks!
I wondering.! Why don't they sell this fun in our country.! Great video, and I am always waiting for your videos.
Hi 23 - so glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks!
I have to tell you, this is the roughest batch of seconds I've ever seen! I've ordered probably 5-7 of these, the pencil lover's version of gambling, and never once have I received an end as chewed up as the two you profile here. So this is probably a great introduction to these seconds box, as it shows you what you might find.
very easily sharpened away for a big rat-chewed end!
Hi moonbastic - this is my first box, so I don't have any to compare it to. But it's an interesting variety of all the possibilites. Thanks!
An excellent deal. Presumably most factories must do something of the sort, since once wood and graphite are bonded together there's not much to be done in the way of salvaging any rejects economically. I know Cumberland / Derwent used to sell off Rexel seconds for pennies through the pencil museum in Keswick.
Hi GenWivern2 - it makes sense that companies would sell their seconds for reduced price rather than just throwing them in the dumpster, although I hear many companies distroy their seconds because they don't want any inferior products with their name in the marketplace. Thanks!
That was fun, thank you! I see there is a Hotel BelleClaire in New York City, Beaux Arts style.
affordable by 2025 standards, at least for the peasant-class rooms
Hi Brian - thanks for the info on Hotel Belle Claire!
Kevin, I've been thinking: like you yourself said, you go through pencils very fast. Would it be too much to ask for you to document in video the lifespan of a brand new pencil in your care, with, say, daily or otherwise periodic short clips demonstrating how much you've used of it, all compiled in one single video? It would at least give us an idea of how fast you consume a pencil from "fresh off the store" to "so stubby that not even an extender would help".
Hi DFT! That's an interesting idea but the logistics of recording the pencil use might be more complicated than I am able to manage. I have three primary workspaces in distinct locations and pencils that serve me at home, work and the studio. I might use three or four different pencils in a day in a constant cycle of sharpening, wearing down, sharpening, etc. Unfortunately, while I do go through pencils fast my pencil use is much like my life in general - complicated! LOL! I love the concept, though. Thanks!
@@AlwaysAnalog Ah, I understand. You use pencils but don't EDC them or anything. Fair enough! Well, at least the idea is out there for any other heavy pencil users 😉
Wow, that is SO much value 🤩 I would absolutely buy that gross for 5 US dollars, or even 10. Just like with the Opportunity line you've reviewed recently, a few cosmetic defects really don't take away from the practical value of the pencils if you're buying them to _use_ and not to simply gawk at. They're still Musgraves, after all. Plus, collectors of unusual samples like our friend MAMO would probably appreciate the more curious defects like the double prints, so that's added novelty/rarity value.
Hi DFT - I agree that these really are a good value if you are looking for a practical source of reliable pencils and aren't caught up in the aesthetics of the instrument. Some of the defects are interesting and could be a catagory of collecting in itself! Thanks!
0:25 to skip the bugged intro, y'all.
Thanks, DFT. I wish I knew why this happens occasionally. It's annoyiong.
What a great value!
I agree, RBS! Thanks!
Interesting pencils too. Musgrave surely does have a lot of production for being a pretty old yet distinguished pencil factory. And I definitely agree these are not a bad deal. Plus its great for the environment and also give them some good money to support this pretty cool company.
Hi CRxTRDud3 - I'm glad these are available and not something they just toss out in the garbage. These really are still useful pencils even with their imperfections. Thanks!
5:56 If I garner a guess, they are definitely destined for mini pencils for golfers. I saw that in an episode in Tennessee Crossroads showcasing Musgrave where they show them making golf pencils as well. Possibly a problem with the other side's ferrule during assembly.
You mean as in, they print and add ferrules to both sides of the pencil, then saw it in half to make two shorter ones?
I know you can order custom golf pencils from Musgrave. I always thought they were a standard pencil cut in half. Thanks!
Please Mr. Alway Analog, I would like to see more pencil reviews. They make me want to go out and buy pencils.
Of course he's goind to review more pencils. Kevin has a backlog of pencil reviews spanning years, he has mentioned aplenty that wood pencils are his bread and butter, and nothing has changed for that situation to change. And since you want to buy pencils, these Factory Seconds are looking very tempting.
Hi Carl - I will keep the videos coming! There are plenty of pencil reviews on my channel and many others on RUclips that do great pencils review. Just search and you'll find plenty to watch. Thanks!
Yea I know, l watched almost all your videos.
Just Found this channel and hooked from the get go!
Hi jaman! Glad you found me and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the review sir. It is encouraging to see quality pencils still made in America. I look forward to your next posting.
Thanks, Lewis! I appreciate you watching!
BiC 4 life
do the bics from south africa write darker than the ones from france or mexico, a user just posted samples from different origins or manufacturing and the south africann was darker than the rest of them
That's interesting. Perhaps they have a different ink formulation. I've never seen or used a Bic from South Africa. Thanks!
I have older blue bic cristals that I compared to the new ones labeled with this Smoother ink. The old ones feel smoother and the line is slightly darker, so it seems to me to be a modern "sh*tification"-labeled-as-an-upgrade situation. Both types are still great pens though.
Hi Man - Bic has changed the ink formulation over the years. I think the older Bics had ink that was a bit darker and smooth, but they tended to blotch more. Thanks!
I found this pencil in a drawer at my parents' house and asked for it, since it was by General's. Mine has the same imprint on the pencil, but it is silver foil, instead of the green in this video.
Hi darthblade - thanks for sharing that information. Generals must have changed the imprint color over the years.
@AlwaysAnalog entirely possible, as I have no idea how old this pencil is or how long it was in a drawer, lol
The last good Royal. After this it is all downhill. A fitting tribute to the greatest typewriter ever made. Another good vid with solid info.
Hi JB - thanks so much! This is an excellent typewriter. I agree that the following generations of Royals were not as good. Thanks!
Essentially an SX with "Golden Touch'" marketing. Underwood's have their fans, but the reality is that by 1958 they were no longer a top tier manufacturer and were well on their way to being consumed by Olivetti. Nice vid overview with tons of info.
Hi JB - of the Underwoods of this era, this is probably my favorite. I was never a big fan of their portables, but I liked their standards. The next decade certainly felt the Olivetti influence in all their products. Thanks!
I bought a pack recently (Dec 2024) and they don't have the support collar.
Hi roadgent - thanks for the information. I didn't know they deleted the support collar.
I bought one at Hightide in LA back in Feb last year - great pen
Thanks, erro! Glad you got one - it is a great pen!
I don't have one yet, but I actually like the self advancing design. The two other choices are screw mount or suction cup. I don't want to drill any holes, and the suction cup one I had was picky about surface or a race to sharpen a pencil till it lost adhesion. This design allows you to hold it down while cranking it.
Hi HelmutDoork - I like that design too, especially for a student desk where a suction cup won't last very long!
I would love to take a refresher course on cursive writing from you. Over the years I have taken some shortcuts in my cursive penmanship. Yours looks super!
@@rcdoodles6214 As it turns out, Kevin has two videos on handwriting basics. Not sure if they're exactly what you desire, but they're a good start.
Hi rcdoodles! I think one of the best ways to maintain one's penmenship is to write every day. Just a paragraph or two, or more if you like. Get a notebook with decent paper and use your favorite pencil or pen and start writing. Write slowly with focus on how your are forming your letters. Feel free to use samples of others' handwriting to guide you, if you want. Do this for month and as you flip through the pages of the notebook you will see how your handwriting has improved. Thanks!
It's the colors of the Hungarian flag!
Hi Gospelofknives! That makes this Hungarian pen even better! Thanks!
This made me love their products more!
Thanks, ichiro.g!
Review( Reynolds 045 ) a classical pen from India🇮🇳
If I ever come across one I will review it. You don't see them here in the USA. Thanks!
Researching it, you can actually refill these pens. And they do look pretty classy indeed. Though I saw the original ICO 70s I see online look different inside.
Thanks, CrxTRDud3 - I don't know how easy it is to get the refills from ICO, but I think most standard refills will fit in this pen.
