It's actually really cool that technology has allowed people to enjoy simulators like this. I knew a guy growing up who wanted to be a fighter pilot but unfortunately his vision prohibited him from making it, haven't talked to him in a while hopefully he is able to live out his dreams with something like this.
That's what happened to my dad, he joined the Navy but couldn't become a pilot due to his eyesight. Might set up my VR headset for him to try something like this.
I play IL-2 and that can get pretty heart racing but this is just sensory overload, I had to rewatch this multiple times to understand slightly what just happened
The tomcat can be a lot bc the rio yells at you the whole time. If you don't like it there is an option to shut him up. Otherwise the hornet and the viper don't have a rio and it can be really fun (and time consuming) to learn to dogfight with them
Very clean execution of that breaking maneuver, I've done that a couple of times in another game, as we'll as climbing at high speeds to cut engines and use the fall to have a slow 180 turn and re-engage engines once I'm nose down. Absolutely bamboozles other players hehe.

A couple of things, we use the same stick, gotta get me one of these throttles. And then, you are rocking that stache kid. Would make Robin Olds proud.
The throttle adds a TON of capability and you wont be able to imagine ever not using it. I fly with the WinWing Orion set up now with two MFD and the UFC all in front of me and its so nice. Mustache adds +10 naval aviation skill, for sure.

This is called “Hands On Throttle And Stick” or HOTAS. The Multi Function Display (MFD) is the square screens surrounded by buttons on each side. The Up Front Controls (UFC) are the collection of buttons, dials, and switches directly in front of the pilot. Modern jets like the f-18 have radio and a number pad for inputting all sorts of settings.

when a third party (like another plane) is viewing both you and the enemy on radar and you get close enough the radar signature merges into one. So "merge" in this case refers to the fact that we have to fly past each other in close proximity, THEN we fight. if this were any other server I would have fired a missile on him from 80 miles away and never actually seen them. This server is specifically to dogfight and the rule keeps the fight fair. hope that explains it!
Hardest part of VR is not being dizzy from it. It goes away after a few weeks. Your brain will learn to be ok with the flips and turns with no physical G forces. I used the Logitech 3D pro and thrustmaster TWCS. The thrustmaster t16000 is all of that and pedals and its the same brand. Nothing has to be the same brand to work together. Check /r/hoggit on reddit for more tips

When you see a guy pull a move like this, you need to go in tight as if to ram. Swinging wide avoids the collision, but sets you up for a very slow relative pass due the the angles, plus defender need only relax a bit to pick up a solution. If you go in tight and manage to avoid the collision, you'll overshoot to his _inside_ of the turn, stalling, losing speed, it will be a lot harder for him to turn _tighter_ to get that same solution. There is that moment that you will pass right in front of him, but it is nanosecond timing, compared to the wide pass. It's not much, but should be enough to let you bust a move out of there before he gets guns to bear.
There is for IR based head tracking where you are not wearing a VR headset. The camera interprets the movement of the IR reflectors/LEDs and you can set a curve to be really minute movements or 1:1 for the first half of movement, but in order to look behind you, you cant actually look away from your screen so you can set it to look 180° when you face 80° to the side. For VR like what i am using in the video, there is no curve option because it would be very disorienting. In order to look back i have to actually hold onto my chair and turn around completely and also fly like that. You can imagine how disorienting it is to look backwards while pulling up and rolling periodically with both my feet (the f-14 will roll with yaw due to its aerodynamics and simpler “fly by wire”) and the stick, but things like that get surprisingly easy to do without the use of dramamine over many hours!
