- In an attempt to curb the rising menace of single-use plastic, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) joined hands with Ecolastic Private Limited to launch biodegradable packaging products, which are made from natural and plant-based food-grade materials.
These sustainable bags would be made available in two forms -soluble and insoluble. These bags would be biologically degraded in about three months without negatively impacting the environment.
According to @DRDOL1VE and Ecolastic Private Limited, conventional polyethylene bags made from petrochemicals are toxic to the environment and take years to degrade. In contrast, these bags would be offered as a 'sustainable, cost-effective and ocean-safe alternative' to such plastic products. Tirupati Laddus to now be distributed in eco-friendly biodegradable bags
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched these eco-friendly biodegradable bags for laddus at Tirumala temple. DRDO Chairman Satish Reddy along with Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Executive Officer Dr KS Jawahar Reddy and Additional EO AV Dharma Reddy inaugurated an exclusive sale counter at Tirumala. The DRDO Chairman said the Advance Systems Laboratory of DRDO in Hyderabad has been doing a lot of research and inventing ways to find the best environment-friendly replacement for hazardous plastic.

By god's grace I know him personally and so far his journey has been phenomenal. He's worked so hard right from his college days till date to reach this position. Young generation must know more about him. At times he gave up comfy offers of various MNCs and rather put nation first. I wish him all success ahead. may everyone of us start using these biodegradable bags for one time use and throwing trash in the near future. We're looking forward for other packaging solutions to roll out soon.
Thanks to DRDO scientists for coming up with a much needed innovation to beat plastic. One month ago when we got this cover at TTD prasadam counter, it was fascinating to see it is bio degradable in 90 days. Soon this technology should be reaching masses. But UNICEF already discouraged the use of food materials for making biodegradable polymer films as there are millions of poor people who are starving for lack of food.
In the beginning we prepared biodegradable polymer composite films for packaging applications using wheat protein isolate and soy protein isolate and published many Research papers 10 years ago. But later we discontinued using food materials as per the recommendations of UNICEF.
Then we made completely biodegradable polymer composite films using non edible biodegradable thermoplastic polymers Polylactic Acid, PHBV, polypropylene carbonate etc. We improved the strength and decreased the cost by using kitchen waste as low cost filler. We published the results in many journals during 2014-2017.
For TTD pilgrims use cotton bags are sufficient as we can reuse them several times. This provides value for the abundant and renewable cotton which is grown more and non edible. We dedicated our work on Biodegradable polymer composite films for packaging to our beloved Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modiji.
