    Fun fact: Coco's name in the Japanese version of the AC games is "Yayoi", which is derived from the Yayoi period of Japanese history (1000 BC-300 AD). Haniwa statues are theorized to have first been made in the Late Yayoi period before they rose to prominence in the Kofun period. And the Gyroids themselves (Loid included) are referred to as haniwa in the JP version of the games.
    If she really is a living haniwa/gyroid, then it's plausible she may contain the spirit of someone from ancient times.

    Another possibilty is that Coco was never origionally a living being before this form. The Gyroids are hinted to be fairly old when you dig them up. She could be a tsukumogami of q gyroid. A tsukumogami in Japanese mythology is an inatimate man made object that has aged to 100 years and as a result gained its own life. Being a gyroid come to life, Coco's house and choice in decor would sinply be a reflection of this. The style she lives in reflects her existance and purpose before gaining her own consiousness since it would still be a big part of her base identity. These mythological creatures tend to show up in media a lot, often depicted steriotypically as common housbold objects that may get limited use and thus last a long time. Parasols and brooms are some of the most depicted with the larer often shown cyclopian, hopping around. There is no limit yo the object as far as im aware of though, and something like a gyroid makes sense since it would be built to last a long time. It also has a bit of a poetic spin on it. It would have been made to commenorate a knce living being but after a hundred years, there would almost undoybtedly be nothing PHYSICALLY left of them, even burried. Thus the marker having served its purpose and gained its own life almost replaces what it was serving. It goes on to live itself for what had passed.

    • @ecozy_
      @ecozy_ Месяц назад +4

      "after a hundred years, there would almost undoybtedly be nothing PHYSICALLY left of them, even burried" surely you must know that we humans have routinely been digging up hundreds of thousands year old skeletons for a very long time... right?

    • @buddyzilla4557
      @buddyzilla4557 Месяц назад

      @ecozy_ -No we have not. What you are referring to are fossils. That is when the skeletal structures create a mold in the mineral matrix around them and a cast is then made. The sediment hardens around. The remaining hard tissue of a body. That then finishes decomposition as well and leaves empty holes in the shape of those harder parts. Minerals slowly seep in, usually as a result of defending rain water and fill the empty holes. These then solidify over time separately creating natural replicas. They are NOT the original tissue however. This is a rare occurrence in the big picture of however. If you are referring to mummies then still wrong. Natural mummies like found in bogs and snowdrifts are EXTREMLY rare. They are cases of natural preservation by complete coincidence, require the conditions to be just right for preservation and (most importantly) NOT part of typical burial processes. While some very specific and complex ancient cultural funerary practices did involve forms of embalming that lead to unnatural mummification, this was expensive, limited to the culture/status of the individual and hinged on tampering/accident not occuring. If buried in a typical manner, natural decomposition may be slightly delayed by mortuary chemical preserving fluids and the coffin but that is also mostly organic and the whole things would become victim to decomposition. You have no idea what you are talking about about but thought you could sound smart and come off big by being a know it all bully. You are wrong. Learn to be less of a Trollish piece of rude garbage so you don't get smacked down like the mutt you are by people much smarter/more educated than your sorry but.

      @@ecozy_ Its mostly a legend/myth in regards to this. Japan has a huge plethora of legends or myths where 'modern known time and ideas' were not considered 'real' then by the larger population. Japan also was rather meticulous about writing history on things that may not be 'permanent' either way myths dont generally make sense like fae or the loch ness monster. this video has a very interesting way of explaining it. we dont literally believe these things most days like old wives tales used to scare children into not clipping their toenails at night or in the dark because they will hurt themselves etc.

    I was talking about this exact subject with a friend and we also got on the topic of the whole theory that the villagers aren't real animals, and she suggested that the animals are just gyroids in animal suits/skins (like some sort of disguised robot), that they all look like Coco underneath, but Coco is just missing her skin, and now I'm terrified.

    On the subject of Japanese myths, I always thought that Shino was not a normal deer, but a Kirin, likely with her own dark backstory that is unknown. This is because of her face with her horns and fangs resembling a Hannya mask. Hannya masks in Noh theatre represented women who turned Oni because of negative emotions like jealousy and anger. This is because of the Kirin's own righteous fury. They may be pacifists and very big on respecting nature, but they have been said to be used in Chinese trials as they can sense intentions, and will not hesitate to reduce an evil person to ash.
    This makes sense because peppy villagers are very friendly, but are pretty easy to upset, and thus she could very realistically be a very sweet girl, but "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Her description may say that she "will probably tell her whole life's story," but the whole description appears to be from an "outside-looking-in" perspective; people always tend to judge extroverts as leaving no mystery about themselves, but that may not necessarily be true. Even extroverts can be capable of hiding depression, self-hatred, or an abusive past behind a friendly and happy-go-lucky mask and try to distract and distance themselves from their anxieties.

      Im a Extrovert. Enfj, to be exact. And u are right. We only show and share what we wish to share. We do seem like a open book to most who dont know us personally. We do hold back alot of emotions, opinions and thoughts to not worry others and also it helps us to not think about the things that bother us as well. I used to hide the abuse i endured as a child from my parents by always appearing happy go lucky around my friends and anyone outside my home. I ddint want to share what was going on behind closed doors because i was afraid. For me and others. Everyone would always say in school "Brittany always has a smile on her face and is always so happy." But inside i was the most depressed person hiding in a mask of who i wanted to be. And all i could think was "you dont know me. I make it appear like im happy. Im not."

As someone whose mother was abused for 10 years by her ex-husband; thank goodness the imbecile was not my father; I certainly know that any fools who would dare harm their own family deserve no family. There are many hotlines out there if you need them, and many people who unfortunately very much know your pain.
      About my mother, while she can't escape from the consequences of her abuse, having been severely injured by it all, she is living a much better life, herself. The man who eventually would be my father helped her and my brother escape, and he's nowhere close to being as problematic as that fool. It does make sense that Coco would be a spirit inhabiting a clay body (I wonder if the Gyrotoids are actually her room mates, or perhaps she makes them as well as spare bodies for herself), Animal Crossing has incorporated other being from Japanese folklore, such as Blanca being based on the Nopperabou, and Japan is in general more open to the supernatural. So it's possible that the other villagers know too are just OK with it, sort of, yes she died and has a clay body now, but she's still Coco; she might not even be the only undead villager, Ankha sometimes has what appear to be the bandages used in mummification as her default outfit and is said to be thousands of years old
    Though it does put a rather....interesting light on one line she can have in Pocket camp, granted a few different characters will also say the same thing, but this one line has the villager admiring your camper and saying that they'd like to have one, but the last time they drove a car in ended badly for the car; it's usually a silly throwaway line, but with Coco it feels like a possible bit of lore (^.^')

She was around for a lot of funerals before something happened… One day, a woman with the whole “ normal villager” personality died, and Coco was set above the grave. However, the woman’s soul came, and, longing to live once more, came to rest inside Coco. Coco keeps the gyroids and the fires in her house because she has a strange feeling that she was around those things all the time once before…

    She reminds of of when I was younger and games had more backstory creep factor. Like majoras mask and link beind dead from the beginning and you're in purgatory. Or the old lore about mabel sabel sosters and tom nook having history in the wii version. Which i never ever got to the bottom of no matter how hard i played and looked in my game 😢
    Also now I know it's based around death statues. My Coco is getting a house and outside house revamp.

    I assume the things in her house are not for cremation but for firing clay. I would say she likely makes the gyros you see. So being one that makes more has its own interesting imoplications

    Coco used to be just an ordinary rabbit. Until she died in a housefire, burning entirely, remains and all. The soil her home was on was peculiar, it had an abundance of clay. Her ashes mixed with the clay, and one night after a heavy rainstorm, Coco woke up.

    I wonder if the cactuars in the final fantasy series are references to haniwa too? They have almost the same look as the gyroids do

    Wow the Haniwa are so cool & haunting to look at, never knew gyroids were based off of a real thing. Almost makes the whole theory where the animal crossing universe is an afterlife make more sense. You know those random "mom letters" you get in animal crossing? I heard a theory that the mom is writing letters to her deceased child (the player) & that the universe is like an afterlife or utopia for the child (hence the cute talking animals and happy colors) Makes sense too cause the letters are always heartfelt too. It's just a theory tho but it makes so much sense. Then the gyroids resembling the Haniwa makes it even more spooky, so idk maybe they were on to something with that theory cause why would they put something in the game based off of sculptures that were made for the dead 😱

    I don’t have much evidence to prove this but what if there was a whole civilization of gyroid people now all the remains is Coco and the buried gyroids that you dig up. Also Coco looks more like Cork than a coconut so I think that was the inspiration for the name
