    I've got a Norwegian Forest Cat at home, slightly smaller than the Siberian, but still large for a housecat. He's pretty awesome. Loves to play, loves to come and get petted and loved on, dislikes being not in a room with a human if the humans are home... Just all around good.

    20:58 like with most modern animal categorisations, relatedness. It's why snow leopards can get into the big cat group even though they're not really super big, as they're closely related to tigers(even closer than the other big cats I think but I could be wrong). It's also why all birds(and not just chickens) ARE dinosaurs and not just closely related. Birds are closer to some 'typical' dinosaurs like Dromaeosaurs(velociraptors and stuff) than those same dinosaurs are closer to other 'typical' dinosaurs like say, a Stegosaurus. Speaking of, you've probably seen it go around in media that the chicken is like, the closest living relative of T.rex. And while that is technically true, the chicken isn't any closer related to a T.rex than any other bird, as all birds are more closely related to each other than they are to other dinosaurs. If you start taking into account extinct dinosaurs birds and T.rex become far more separated, though the Tyrant Lizard King is still more closely related to a duck than it is to a Triceratops. Oh and, both a duck and a T.rex are closer to a Brachiosaurus than all 3 of them are to a Trike. Cladistics is fun like that.
    TLDR, blame nepotism lol

    The thing is this naming mess of Big cat is mainly a english languege thing, as every language name things differently some of this confusing logics are only present in english, also in science the first name given to a animal is the one it will have forever with very few special cases, and most of the famous animals were named before we had genetic testing so people had to guess who they were releted based on looks

    The Clouded Leopard's closest relative is _Homotherium_ aka the Scimitar-Toothed Cat. They lived from 100k-15k years ago in Eurasia and North America.

      @EG-hy9mv 11 месяцев назад +2

      Unless I missed some new science, isn't Homotherium a Machairodontine? That would make it it's own branch within the Felidae family, closely related to other members like Felinae and Panthera, but less closely related than Felinae and Panthera are to each other.
      That, and aren't Clouded Leopard's PantherINES? Closer related to Panthera than other Felids without being part of the Panthera genus itself?

    Really nice to see this new recording setup and dialogue format. 2024 is looking good for your channel’s growth.

    Jungle Cats should be called Swamp Cats, cause that's where they actually live (that's what it's actually called in most languages, except for English)

    If i remember correctly the reason there is so many Tigers in America is because some people want them as pets and some breeds them illegaly to sell them.

    It mostly because we named them based on how they look before we started sorting them based on ancestry and relatedness, so a cat that's big isn't a big cat if it doesn't share the same most recent common ancestor of all the other Panthera cats

    Dogs have the same problem as the deer vs tiger colour issue - if you throw a bright orange ball for them onto green grass, they lose it because to them the two things are the exact same colour and shade. Because dogs also have no red receptors in their eyes so they can't see red through to orange and even yellows appear as lighter green-blues.

    The diference between "big cats" and "small cats" is evolutionary. All "big cats" are related to one another in the Panthera group, while the rest are in the felidae group. Since the panthera are the largest cats, even if the snow leopard is smaller then the largest felidae, we call them "big cats".

    You missed it... the cutest clip in the whole movie. Go watch the end again, and say hi to the kitty.
    But yeah, naming conventions are insane, like many of the other "science" that they did in the 1600-1800s.

    The snow leopard is a big cat because it and the other Panthera share a common ancestor. These five cats descended from one particular ancestor that eventually split into them and is why they all fall under the genus. Once you look at the cladogram or family tree of cats it starts to make sense.

    I genuinely can’t tell if there’s still a slight colour difference between the tiger and the landscape in this picture, or if my brain is just creating the orange colour based on the colour that it expects to see…

    My best friend is a Siberian Tabby . She's as big as a raccoon and kills anything that's smaller than she is . Including squirrels and rabbits. So if you want a Siberian I hope you don't have smaller pets . BTW check out a cat named Bon Jovi on RUclips for an idea of temperament. He can rip you a new one and so can my Big Poof
