Merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Thanks for the timing tip. I'll need to check out the timing of the 350 in my 72 Chevy El Camino.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both,,
Thanks Luke, Merry Christmas to you too sir, I just bought the timing light to go w/ my carb cheater, appreciate all you do for us lame duck mechanics,, never used a dialback, Hank gon'' learn🎄🎁😂
Merry Christmas Luke and family.
I can confirm, I know several dead ppl that did not own a dial back unit. Merry Christmas dude.
What an invaluable resource of information uncle Luke is. Used his teaching to time a GM Mercruiser 165 straight six a couple months ago in a 1981 Cobalt Runabout I picked up and she is purring like a kitten.
Yep. He's still wrong about where to pull vacuum. Still awesome though.
Well, open your mouth and tell people where to put your vacuum line. Don't keyboard warrior
@@UserUser-zc6fx I'm pretty sure to tune you read vacuum on ported for initial timing then move to manifold for total.. no? That's how you use a vacuum gauge I'm pretty sure. Or backwards, but I know you use both.
My 83 F250’s 460 has a drinking problem. Been digging thru your archives for pointers on carb adjustments and timing. Thank you for all the knowledge shared! 🛠️
Put a lawn mower carb on it😂
@ that would be cool. Wonder if it’d still tow heavy with it? Hmmm…
The Carb Cheater kit is your answer! It can help a good engine run leaner at cruise & light load (better fuel economy) & transition to richer AFR during harder to full throttle acceleration, then back to economy automatically!
From what I've seen, a later 460 will run much better with an early timing chain set because Ford retarded the cam for emission purposes. If I had a 460 equipped vehicle I would seriously investigate.
@@mickangio16
I recall back in the 90's when distributor engines were disappearing that my 5.0 mustang was running poor and I dropped it at a tuneup shop. They supposedly put it on the big scope and checked everything. Stated they had set my timing as it was "off" .yeah the dated thing had no power. Got home loosened the clamp and advanced the timing a few degrees and it improved. Turns out I had a ball of carbon on the #5 plug due to leaking valve seal. Needless to say most folks don't know how to get close by ear much less use a light.
Just saw you in Kevin's shop in the same get up.🤣🤣
That aside I love your informative videos. Have a great Christmas Luke, Mrs Luke also.
I think I even said in his video "same clothes as always" or something like that 😄
Merry Christmas and happy new year 🙂
@@ThunderHead289 It is your uniform... and it makes editing easier.
So...are we going to see you timing a certain green Mazda pickup? 😁
Tidy plug wires
Luke has an incredible ability to make the most complex sounding topic sound so simple, and yet explain it in a way that a 5 year old could understand!
It was great to see you at Kevin's garage. I think he really liked the 8/16 wrench.
😁
8/16" wrench is nice, but I'm really desperate to find a 16/32" wrench. 😁
Back when I had my hot rod Torino, I was grateful that Ford stamped timing marks into their harmonic balancers. I painted mine black and filled in all the timing marks with white paint.
Ah the ol two quarter inch wrench
@@servicetrucker5564 Oh, yeah, I need one of those too! 😂
More timing lights please! I went to link literally while watching and already sold out. Been looking for one I can actually trust the calibration on and it’s killing me I missed them. Love that you made these!!
@12 yrs ago a test was run on @ 6 different lights.
Dial back total timing varied by 5*.
I prefer marking the damper and using a conventional light, OR confirming calibration of the dial back.
Clicked to buy, but sold out. 🤔
More lights please must have been sold out before I saw the video prepayment would be good for me consider doing thi👍👍👍
Harbor Freight has dialback lights for like $30
If you just want to check your initial timing there are 2 different ways when using a back dial timing light at idle.
First turn the dial to 0 and use it like a non back dial timing light.
Second, turn the dial until the balancer line is on zero on the timing tab and read what’s on the dial.
Just make sure vacuum advance is plugged.
My Dad wouldn't go to the track (drag strip) without a timing light! If he was in the garage, the timing light was nearby. And that was the 60's to the 90's. Always have a timing light and I'd get this one from this guy. My Dad would.
Merry Christmas to you and your lovely bride Young Uncle Luke. You make us old guys proud A true gentleman.
Never needed a dial timing light yet. Cause all my racer/engines have fully-degreed balancers, I personally don't trust the dial-back part. Good for you Luke , for offering an affordable tool , that many will get good service from.
Just fully degreed balancers aren't enough you must have locked out distributor as well the dial back is to find out advance of mechanical advance mechanism
If you have a crank trigger it’s very easy to set the timing. And if you have the MSD Grid it’s easy to change the timing
I think I said this on the video where you first showed these timing lights, but thanks. I can't fathom why it's so expensive to get a plain ol dial back light now
But good on you for doing what you can. Just a quick note for people running multi spark ignition, dial backs do crazy stuff with them so no, you're not losing your mind. You'll time way more stuff without multi spark ignition so buy two of these and send me one.
Merry Christmas Thunderhead I've been watching you since the beginning and always enjoy your videos
This is bad ass. Ordered one, and will spread the word. Thanks!
Happy Holidays, Luke, to you and yours! Thank you for all the great videos, you are perhaps one of, if not THE most informative, instructive and knowledgeable auto channels on YT. I mean that in all honesty, after 50 years of causal wrenching I still learn things from you with almost every video.
Great economical deal on the dial-back timing light!
I learned to appreciate a dial-back years ago, makes things so simple! Blessings Professor Luke.
Just ordered your timing light. Your channel has been very helpful in setting up my 1957 Buick 364 nestled neatly in my 31 Model A. Happy Holidays 🎉
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your very lucky wife!
I just received my timing light, complete with a "Tested by Luke" label. Thanks, can't wait to use it!
Been needing to get a new timing light. Got me one ordered. Thanks Luke!
I use my dial back timing light and tach and dwell every single tune-up. I added an adjustable cam pulley for further refinement.❤ My truck is always tuned perfectly to efficiency.
Just bought one! I've been wanting one for a long time but just couldn't justify the money when my old one has been working fine for the last 40 years.
I had one years ago, had a 69 Torino 302 and a 70 Thunderbird 429 and I wa almost weekly chasing timing on those old engines because both needed timing chains. I kept them running good thouugh.
I had a '78 302 that you'd turn the crank till you felt the slack leave in the chain if you wanted to start it easy and have some sort of power for a bit.
If you didn't, it would take forever to start and would die when you put the C4 in drive.
This is so true about timing lights. I let my friend work on my F350 with 400 for years. He never owned a timing light. I bought one and did all the adjustments myself watching his videos. I have an air/fuel guage, fuel pressure guage, tach, and vacuum guage. Man the timing was way off and this truck runs better than ever with better fuel mileage. The timing light is an investment...you will get your money back on it by using it.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR AWESOME, INFORMATIVE, AND FUNNY😁 CONTENT I HAVE LEARNED MUCH FROM YOU!
YOU STOP LEARNING, AND YOU STOP LIVING!
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THIS 62 YR OLD SHADE TREE TECHNICIAN IN LILBURN GA!
My 1st ever timing light was a sears craftsman dial back . Bought it in the 80s and still use it today. I cant stand to use one without the dial. An ex friend needed to borrow one one time at the drag strip. I offered mine .He refused to use it because the dial blew his mind.. Guess it was too complicated for him. Glad we are not friends anymore. That had nothing to do with the timing light. It was over politics. His decision to not be friends anymore ,not mine. Again he was not very smart. If my old craftsman ever decides not to work any more. I will think about buying one of yours. Merry Christmas.
I still have mine that I bought from JC Whitney back in the 80's. Still going strong.
Thank you, I’ve been looking for an actual dial light… without having to lose an arm … I think I’ll end up with two or three soon. My sons birthday is coming up, and I am putting together an assortment of tools for my grandson to give as presents as he gets older.
Thanks for the video Luke I see you were on the show with Kevin yesterday.
Another great, educational video. Love that you are offering a simple, quality timing light at a totally fair price - good on you, Luke! Love the 8/16” wrench, but I actually need a 3/6” - any chance of seeing Carb Cheater put on of those out?
Thanks luke, just ordered one!
😂😅 8/16" wrench! That's fantastic! I have the Actron timing light and another to keep my VW purring. I've always just gone by sound and smell once the timing is initially set. A well tuned engine has that special presence. Thanks for explaining the dial.
Marital aid? You tube thumbnail. Comedy writes itself. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
$40 for a dial back timing light? Sounds like the best purchase ever! Thank you Luke for doing what you do to support us gear heads! I haven’t gotten a Carb Cheater yet as 3/4 of my vehicles are fuel injected and I can’t justify putting it on my truck, but as soon as I get something worth it, I’m buying a Carb Cheater.
Great training video. well done, Timing is everything
You made an appearance on Kevin's video released yesterday. It was good seeing you there.
Gave my dial back to my son and was looking for a cheap replacement. Spent the $120 on a innova. I'm buy one of yours just cause I like the simplicity and will probably use it more. I'll probably never touch the expensive one again. LOL. And I gotta have some of those wrenches, too funny!!!!
Guys order up some of these wrenches! Makes a nice Christmas gift for your gear head friends.
Merry Christmas Luke!
Got mine ordered. Definitely going to get a carb cheater for my 79 Bronco when they are available
Wow, this takes me back... I learned to use a timing light in the 70's helping my dad with his '65 289 Mustang and '72 351C Mercury Montego. Back then you just painted the marks and lined them up, we didn't have a dial-back light. I do have one now to use on my '86 Mercury Capri 5.0L but it's timing has always been rock solid and never really had the chance to use it. Once I get it running again I'll definitely refer to your video here. And I do believe I have an older Actron model, probably 30 years old.
Used their meters to set the points dwell on those older cars too. Newer mechanics look at my stuff and are like "WTF is that?" LOL
Perfect time for a refresher. I'm going over a Massey Ferguson 202 Workbull (industrial version of the MF 35) with a 2.2 Continental 4cyl. I got it close by setting cyl 1 at TDC, then rotating the distributor until the points opened (using the continuity setting on a basic multi-meter). Going to a timing gun, I was surprised that it was still out just shy of 15°!
Now I'm wishing for a carb cheater kit for the 1bbl updraft cast iron Marvel-Scheibler! Well...no, not really 😂 but it would be interesting to see what a best possible tune would be like. Thanks for giving an 'ol guy a refresher course young Professor Luke!
Merry Christmas Uncle Luke! - an inductive timing light.
A lot of factors lead to what the correct timing is for your engine is. 302 fords are the creme of the crop small bore, typically 0 deck, small combustion chambers. World of difference between them and a smog era bbf. D3 460's want a bunch of timing to run good where a small block doesn't typically need it.
I got a pretty hot little 289 that I wish I had something to put it into. Actually, the 289/302 has a big bore for their cubic inch size. Compare it to a 305 Chevy and 318 MoPar. The little Ford has the same bore size as a 350 Chevy and 360 MoPar.
8/16 wrench? LOL Priceless!!
I've been following your channel since you come to Keokuk and revived the Satellite. Your the most knowledgeable youtuber I've found on carburetor and I'd love to see you do a video comparing a good tuned carburetor, your carb cheater, and a fuel injection system. All on the same motor and compare fuel mileage, horsepower, and torque. It would be hard to compare reliability unless you made it a couple videos filmed over some time. I think it would be a huge hit
Cool that you hand-calibrate these timing lights. The 8/16ths wrench would be even funnier to plant in the toolbox of our metric-speaking car buddies. 😆👍
I had a pretty crappy dial back light my son in law borrowed and has not returned so I was looking for a decent replacement, and now this shows up. Thanks, just excuse I was looking for. Ordered!
Hey Luke! Great video. Always useful important info. Can't go wrong with the good ol dial back timing light. I think you should add to the 8/16 wrench gag, a left hand metric adjustable!!
Keep these educational videos coming, Luke. I have 67 mustang that I put a 351 Windson into.
My static timing light gave up a while ago. I just now ordered your light. I really appreciate that you aren't trying to make a killing on them. Very nice
Hi from New Zealand, enjoy your videos and always learn from them. Happy Xmas
Thanks Luke for my new timing light. Im 69 now, and needed a new one. My 1977 chrome Sun timing light finally crapped out. Great value in pricing this new one. Love the dial back.
Like your channel, I am an old school mechanic, modern cars to complicated , distributor , carbureted engines are so easy and reliable, you loose a module and the car is useless
Yes, I agree.
It really stinks when you _lose_ a module...also when a module comes _loose._
Another big advantage of the carbureted engines that if something does go wrong with carb or the fuel itself is that you still doctor it enough to get the rest of the way to where you're going or at least to a parts stores
Verse's a fuel injected vehicle
@@T.TuxedoIn the words of another commenter “it’s the RUclips comments, not the writing of the Declaration of Independence”
Luke, may you have lots of success on the carb cheat product line!! On the subject of the 8/16” wrench! Don’t forget about the “never found 10mm” one!! Thanks for sharing merry Christmas and a amazing new year
Dad phrases? Old age and treachery wins every time. How's that?
Good schoolin. Preciate you explaining Timing Light use.
Thanks!
I am buying a carb cheater light immediately! I’ve spent so much time looking for a good reliable timing light. I always end up borrowing my engine builders old school Craftsman dial light and it’s the only one I trust. I bought the cheap Harbor Freight one and it was 6 degrees off the old Craftsman. And I won’t touch a digital one with a 10 ft pole! Thank you for making these affordable Luke!
Very interesting video . Must admit have never used a timing light . Was taught obviously incorrectly , advance timing till engine pings when you rev it up & back off a bit .🤷🏻♂️
That can improve performance on some vehicles, but you can do much better than that if actual performance is what you're after. In my young years I blew a head gasket on one of my 340s by doing pretty much like you said- too much total timing. And on some motors you can't make 'em ping no matter how hard you try.
Yes, different engines have different thresholds of detonation, some are more forgiving than others. Some engines will have uneven cylinders (fuel distribution, cooling, etc.) that will always detonate first and maybe mask the sound until a hole appears in a piston.
Also using a digital timing light just takes time to use and sure it's fancy, but i can just dial my light right to where it needs to be, no pressing up 38 times or missing it, no man.. just set your dial and turn your distributor. Easy peasy.
Thanks, looking forward to spring & waking up my 78 ford truck. Know there’s a lot of power I’m missing out on
God bless you for saving a gearhead’s Christmas with a $40 back dial timing light! Even better it’s not from the jungle e-store. BTW spotted you cruising 30 east in the Galaxy awhile back then Kevin 2 days later at hwy 14 just off 30 in that gold wagon. If you’re in central Iowa and spot an old smokey rusty whatever on the hwy pay attention and wave it’s probably Kevin, if it’s a Ford running like a top it’s Luke, lol.
On an engine that has any kind of timing marks other than just one for TDC. I always used those degree marks with a piece of tape on my balancer, then I roll the motor over by hand marking the balancer with a sharpie every 5 degrees by lining up the balancer with the timing marks. Then I just label the marks up to about 60 degrees or so. Not as good or fast as your timing light but it’ s always worked great for me to see my total timing as how much advance my vac canister adds.
Thanks for messing with this and providing the TL at such a great $...ordered!
Hey Luke, the number 1 cyl on my 347 is the front cyl on the drivers side haha. Hope you have a Happy Christmas and a beersie new year. Cheers, Phil, NZ.
Merry Christmas Thunderhead and family
Awesome Luke, thank you! I need one of those ASAP!
What an amazing upgrade to the older timing light! You are so inventive!!! Merry Christmas to you and the Mrs. 289 ❤🌲
Hey man, what about a 91Z28 which has no vacuum advance, emissions are gone by my choice and well worth it, and a chip buit by tpis that said it was good for for 9btdc , versus the stock 6, I know you don't mess with these things but I have been watching you for 3 years and you definitely know tuning, point being I don't know where total timing needs to be etc
Good morning Luke thank you for the video lots of info there I've been here since the beginning that is how I found junk yard digs both great channels thank you for what you do
12.7 mm is handy because then you don't have to file your 1/2 inch bolts down to 12 mm. Have a great Xmas and thanks for the video.
Outstanding video and you make me want to buy a old truck or car so I can use your stuff. Timing light looks very keen. I know we had a hard time making the advance marks visible and accurate. My old 64 Corvette way back in 1968 had a nice little 327 365 hp 11.25 compression, Fuelly 30/30 Cam, High Rise intake and 650 Holley. It ran great, but after Let some upper classmen at Voc Tech school put it on their dyno and the 60 year old NASCAR mechanic teacher helped to tune the engine I was sold on Tuning Tech. They found a vacuum leak, timing was off and Carb running lean. When i go the old boy back I could feel it was more responsive at lower RPM and pulled harder at higher RPM. Everything was just smoother and stronger. When the engines are tuned right they just run better. Great Products Lukester!
Snagged a couple of those 8/16's couple guys in the shop will get a kick. Keep up the good work!
Merry Christmas, Luke! Love the channel and learn a lot! Have a great holiday and a Happy New Year!!
Just pre-ordered mine can't wait to get it when it come out this will be much needed upgrade to my static light i have.
Pretty cool you guys are offering these especially at that price point. Personally i have to use marked balancers as msd boxes dont like dial back lights.
Marry Christmas and a happy new year I,live in Australia I do love watching your videos on timing and carbs just cep boing it I have a 5.8 2007 ford love your shit

Happy holidays 🎅🎄☃️
Thanks Luke. I appreciate you.
Such a good dude.
I love the content and the cool stuff you make
I saw you gave Kevin the 8/16 wrench on his latest video. Nice, hopefully when my funds arrive and I can sneak a little away I'll be making a small order - can't have enough dial back timing lights, so I'll need one of those, and absolutely need that 8/16 wrench!! Oh wow just looked at the shop and the timing lights went already. I didn't realize this video was 15 hours old already. Darnit!
edit: oh yeah, week before Christmas, Merry Christmas to you and yours Luke. Happy New Year and all the good times : )
Gotta have the dial back learned that early , and access to a distributor machine would be the next step
My digital Actron is about 8 years old and still accurate to a T, having tuned hundreds of classics and is boss. Love the ability to see what RPM I’m at while revving and hopping between timing and rpm at a press of a button. I still check it here and there to another actron static and it’s accurate.
The acrons were good - they just don't even exist anymore, and the company that bought them put a huge price on them
Another great video Luke! Saw you on Junk Yard Digs video today. Keep up the great work
I would like to just add to those who care to not ignore your vacuum pot. Here’s why. You set you total/initial and then hook up your vacuum. Sometimes the vacuum will pull it far above safe in certain particular situations such as mid range mid load up a hill where vacuum will still be present. After setting total I like to also see a full total+vacuum which what I call true total. Also I always see folks saying just set total and let initial fall wherever. Thats dangerous to certain engines as well depending on build. SBC most affected after about 14-16 initial will lug a starter hot, could rip the casting starter ear right off. That’s where distributor magic comes into play. A decent low initial, max safe total at desired rpm and if equipped a limited vacuum pot. Gm HEI setups love to give full vacuum advance in excess of 20+ degrees.
That's why I referenced vacuum advance and why the dial back is handy for it. Remember, you have no vacuum advance at high load, so you definitely need your mechanical total timing to be on your mind.
And I think I said in this video that vacuum advance in excess of 12-15 degrees is a bad idea and should be adjusted.
But yes - there are a lot of horrid distributor setup mentalities out there - this video wasn't about setup, just about using a timing light to see where you are even at and it was still 13 minutes long
Great job buddy. Merry Christmas 🎄
Love your channel and videos lots of info on fords keep it up!🤘🤘
I have an old Sunco dial back timing light that needs to be replaced. I think I might order one of yours and a few of the 8/16” wrenches. Those are hilarious!!! 😂
The wrenches are, for whatever reason, just a ton of fun 😄
I just ordered one of your timing lights. Can’t wait to get it and try it out! Merry Christmas.
Ordered ! Thanks Luke
Luke, thank you for your videos.
WOW total rocket science didn't know that but hey I've only been a mechanic & electronics tech 40+yrs so I learnt nothing!
your TDC mark on the balancer is to thick, its already covering 2-3° of timing 😛
but always happy to watch new videos from you!
merry christmas and happy new year!
In for a timing light. Appreciate all you do. Thanks.
Love Ford's 🤘
Heck yeah that's an awesome deal!
It's even funnier when you tell someone to hand you a 10mm socket and there actually is one there.
