  • Another forgotten Pokémon! Murkrow got an evolution in gen 4 but in gen 2 it's only a single-stage Pokémon. Let's see how this little crow can do in Johto!

    10:13 There's an in-universe reason for how this fisherman got a level 10 gyarados! Canonically, the experiments Team Rocket was doing at Lake of Rage were attempts to use radio waves or that big machine in Mahogany town in order to make pokemon evolve at levels earlier than usual. This fisherman has just caught a poor magickarp that's been experimented on!

      @@et34t34fdf Actually, you're wrong. While neither pokemon are very good, Murkrow is loads better overall than Sneasel, at least in Gen 2. It actually has decent special attack and attack (85 apiece) to take advantage of its STAB moves, whereas Sneasel only has good physical attack and really shitty special attack. Both of Sneasel's STAB types are special attacks in Gen 2, making it considerably worse than Murkrow, and not just by a little either.

    • @et34t34fdf
      @et34t34fdf 3 года назад +2

      @@james_ford86 Its not considerably worse, that is just wrong.
      If Murkrow had crunch then it would be a good mixed attacker, but STAB faint attack of 85 base is okay for in-game, though fairly lame competitively.
      If we are talking in-game, both gets past the ghost trainers with their dark typing, so its not as big of a bonus as you think, murkrow just turns 2hks into ohks against Morty more often, while Sneasel will have to do another hit because its special attack is terrible, but seeing as Gengar basically cant touch dark types makes that a moot point anyway.
      Another point on the special side, murkrow doesnt really have anything beside faint attack to use its decent special attack for, icy wind and if you want, hidden power? Thats about it.
      Sneasel doesnt get good stab, but it does have better coverage in fighting and ground moves(mud slap doesnt count), so there is that, its also lightning quick, though murkrow is fast enough to rarely go last anyway.
      Neither can take a hit is my point, which is mainly why both are awful.

    • @james_ford86
      @james_ford86 3 года назад +1

      @@et34t34fdf Having STAB Moves that the Pokemon can actually make use of, even if it's only a few moves, compared to a Pokemon that lacks any decent STAB moves due to its stats being too low is a HUGE improvement. Sure, Sneasel is faster and hits slightly harder on the physical side, but it can't use that good physical attack stat for anything that gains STAB. This makes Murkrow a much better option, whether we're talking in-game or competitive, than Sneasel.
      No one is saying either Pokemon belongs in the upper tiers of competitive battling for Gen 2 as, like you said, both Pokemon are pretty frail, but that still doesn't change the fact that Murkrow is clearly superior to Sneasel in Gen 2. When you're talking about Pokemon as frail as these two, the stats necessary to achieve OHKO's instead of two-hit KOs is a HUGE difference and can win or lose you the battle. That's why Murkrow is better than Sneasel.

    skiploom is by far one of my favorite Pokémon, solely because I actually found a full (old) odds shiny hoppip by complete accident at one of the wild poke spots, and decided to use it on my team to catch Pokémon. Its when I got to learn just how powerful this little guys was, as it was amazing for putting shadow pokemon to sleep, as well as poison and leech seed Pokémon that I needed out of the way. Just remember, 75% is 100%, skiploom will always go first, and leech seed, poison powder, and giga drain is an amazing combination.
    Edit: forgot to add In Pokémon: Gale Of Darkness, which had a shiny chance of about 1 in 8000, to that crazy hoppip encounter. Even better, when you encounter it, it actually shows up as shiny in the overworld when you see it eating, which was very crazy for me.

    2:00 I was just about to ask where the stat sheet was. It's so neat to see you adding these as they become relevant (along with your moveset).
    10:20 I think there's lore reason why a fellow so close to the Lake of Rage has low level Gyarados, remember that Team Rocket is sending out a radio wave that makes Pokemon evolve faster in the area.

    Hello Scott! Thanks again for another upload; I really enjoy your content! I tend to listen to the audio while working my overnight shift, so it helps keep things fresh!
    Btw, I thought a suggestion for your content you might consider: a Nuzlocke solo playthrough! ("Squadlocke?" Working title.)
    The idea is that you create a team of one Pokémon (e.g. Murkrow), and have 3-6 of them for a playthrough. The number of X Pokémon will depend on the generation and HM Pokèmon needed to progress through the game and optimize your actual team.
    You can the alter the in-game EVs/IVs/Nature/etc to make variants of the same Pokémon for coverage. You can also let viewers comment and/or vote on names for upcoming Squadlockes (blessings for the algorithm)!
    E.g. Murkrow Squadlocke: "Bulkrow" (Def & Sp.Def), "Sky Pie "(Attack, Speed), "Witchbird" (Sp. Attack, Speed)."
    You can also adjust the use of common Nuzlocke rules in combination with your existing solo-run ruleset for difficulty settings.
    This allows another method of playthough that uses your improves knowledge of battling/movesets/speed running while bringing a fresh spin to already successful content!
    Best of luck and keep up the great work!

    To be fair to Fisher Marvin, underleveled Gyarados actually exist in this game. Not quite as low as lv10, but lake of rage actually holds Gyarados specifically from lv15 to 19 (presumably as subtle hint that these were force-evolved by the radio signal of Mahogany hideout). Thanks Team Rocket.

In fact if it’s female you can trade it to the girl in blackthorn city for a level 10 Rhydon (G/S) or Dodrio (C). I managed to do it on my virtual console versions pretty quickly and just cloned the dragonair to keep both. Not to mention all the lower level evolutions available in kanto I.e. rock tunnel, etc.

    Murkrow's evolution was fairly commonly used in competitive battles in later generations, but prior to that it was definitely forgotten. That ended up happening to a lot of gen 2, where they gave the Pokemon a new evolution to boost their profile. Excited to see them used in their forgotten gens though, Aipom seems like it will be fun

      Honchkrow got banned from UU in its debut generation because it was pretty damn broken and uncounterable with stuff down there due to its high attacking stats, wide type coverage and high powered moves.

    I find it interesting tgat yanma, gligar, murkrow, sneasel and tangela all got evolutions later on - and all of them are pretty powerful. Incidentally, i also like all of them, despite being pretty picky when it comes to Pokémon.
    If you are up for a race in a later gen, it'd be rad to See a face between all their evolved forms.

    2:45 Nightmare actually has competitive use in Gen 2, even on Pokémon that don’t learn sleep moves, Starmie in particular. The Rest and Sleep Talk combo is so ubiquitous and powerful that many opposing Pokémon, the unbreakable and unwallable undisputed best Pokémon in the game Snorlax included, are often able to be hit by Nightmare. It’s not a ton of damage, but in the slower-paced Generation 2 metagame, every bit of reliable chip damage is helpful for forcing opponents into KO range.

    • @ShiningJudgment666
      @ShiningJudgment666 3 года назад

      RestTalk was also busted because if Sleep Talk proc'd Rest, it would heal you.

    Well done, Scott and Murmagpie. I had high hopes seein' that thumbnail.
    Also of note, Scott - worth guaging every now and then when and if grinding in the early-game has any long-term payoff. Perhaps the time you skipped grinding earlier may have affected the roadblocks down the line. It's not necessarily the case, but sometimes those extra early levels save a lot more time later, if your vs. Races are any indication

  • @PinkBunnyCorporation

    Having rest at all before red was a bad idea it seems. The only time it helped was when you had mud slap though. So for another run with a low def. Pokemon dont even try rest without accuracy or evasion altering moves with it.

    I remember catching a Murkrow back in the day. I thought it was cool but when I got a Houndoom and eventually Tyranitar, I even had a Umbreon (I had the official strategy guide by Nintendo about G/S but I didn't understand what I was reading and didn't know Eevee had day/night evolutions). The Yanma video should be good or bad. You're getting consistent at how EVIL the Kaiju known as Venomoth truly is.

    Analysis for the algorithm:
    STAB spamming is nearly always your best option. Early game that was working out fine, but you seemed to struggle against Foretress a little by choosing HP Ground. It shares Scizor's best typing ever (fight me), so hitting it with your strongest neutral would be the best option. Fly in this case would probably work best. I don't think the AI is smart enough in this generation to Protect when you should be coming back down. Against Jasmine's infamous snek, I'd have experimented hitting it with Faint Attack due to your strong special and its weak special with the addition of it being STAB. Steelix has such lopsided defenses that it might have actually worked out for you alright despite being not very effective.
