12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

As a part-time Karate instructor myself, I like this film a lot better than the 1984 one - and think it's a lot more grounded in reality - for many reasons. The biggest reasons are the fact that every single thing Mr. Han teaches Dre is technically true. "Kung Fu lives in everything we do" = correct, there are real-world analogs to each movement we do and these comparisons are effective teaching tools. "Always strong" = correct, proper vigor and follow-through are necessary for any strike you throw. Even his remark about the antagonist's instructor not teaching real Kung Fu is very real; the more flashy, acrobatic "wushu" stuff you see is fake Kung Fu developed by the Chinese government as a form of national pride, while Mr. Han's Kung Fu is the more stable, rooted style that has an actual historical basis.
In other words, Mr. Han is not just teaching Dre; he's teaching the viewer very real things about fighting.
Imagine thinking this is grounded in reality but the original is not.

There is no Karate Kid part 4 movie coming out in 2024, it's only after Cobra Kai season 6 finishes, then see audience reaction, then take ideas from that to finally make Karate Kid part 4, but not in 2024, maybe in 2026.

It was also confirmed both Ralph Macchio & Jackie Chan are returning for the new movie. BTW it's not the Karate Kid Part 4 that was actually the Next Karate Kid, and the new movie is just called Karate Kid.

This kid had SOooooooo much potential. Unfortunately, he then got a bad case of the Jadas.

This is the stupidity of the karate kid series. They do a few chores, and instantly they become a martial arts expert sure. I know you’re gonna think I’m just a hater, but I actually love the cobra Kai series and I wish these idiots would bring it back and not take three years.
To give some credit to this film, Dre spent days on one exercise. Daniel spent hours on different exercises. Dre's introduction to Kung Fu is more acceptable.
