my issue isn’t that he switched it up and dropped a house album, it’s that when he did switch it up he STILL dropped a mediocre album considering the genre. the instrumentals were great, but his singing and lyricism was horrendous. also, currents may be his single worst track in his entire album discography

You just said the instrumentals were great, yet I've seen a large number of people say the beats were simple and plain. We all have our own experience with the music. As a South African this album is very underwhelming because it shares beats and sounds from House songs we used to listen to in the mid 2000s and early 2010s. The only reason we hyped it up was because of the Executive Producer (Black Coffee) being one of our own

Drakes biggest problem right now is he's suffering from success. He's living in an era he helped define and has no artistic or financial incentives to change anything. I don't think this a bad project by any means. And I even think he took a few risk on this. But even his risk feel safe. Even him crooning over house beats somehow sounds familiar. The Drake pocket is so pronounced that he could literally do this shit over Taylor Swift records and it'll sound like he's been doing it his whole career. I don't hate the record I just think Drake needs some real time away. No features, no loosies just real pronounced time away to gain new perspectives. My granddad used to always say "how can I miss you if you never leave". That's where Drake's at imo

Growing up in Chicago, I've been around house music all my life. This just wasn't it bruh. No matter how much y'all stans try to defend this. No one is taking away from him trying something different. No one is hating on it just because he isn't rapping. A lot of people just don't enjoy the music sonically. Some of the beats are dope and some of these songs would absolutely slap if Drake had more vocal range. But instead he gives us 12 songs (oustide of Sticky and Jimmy Cooks) using the same dry ass, robotic, boring ass tone. No emotion. Some of the beats were very empty to the point that the music itself was sleep-inducing. THAT'S why there is a lot of issues with it.
Look up Frankie Knuckles, Black Coffee, Mr. Fingers, Aly Us...That's house. This was a bad attempt at emulating it.
Also to clarify, I like Drake's music and have checked in on every mixtape/album since "So Far Gone". There are songs that I fuck with and songs that I don't go back to. Outside of "Jimmy Cooks" I don't have a reason to ever go back to this shit.

Drake seems to be at the point where he’s become extremely separated from his audience and just making music because he feels like it. As an artist I can appreciate it in a sense. But the other side of the coin is he’s not making music to a standard that he used to uphold. It makes it feel almost careless or non appreciative of his own music.

  • @JordanStead
    @JordanStead 2 года назад +414

It's simple: Drake is such a superstar at this point, the only goal he has left to "achieve" is to dominate every element of the music industry that he can, so he can historically go down as the GOAT any way you slice it. There's one reason this album exists: to be placed under the Apple Music genre of "dance music" and instantly make history based on streaming views from legions of Drake fans that are expecting... anything at all from him. He dominated pop, he dominated hip hop - so what's next? Turns out it's "dance music." Now, Drake can walk away from this album with having made streaming history in a new genre (for him) that no one will top again in the "dance" space, thus securing him another career win. He's too big to fail now no matter what he takes on in his career, as he's practically marionetting the music industry at this point. But it makes sense - if I were him, I'd do the same thing.

I appreciate Drake finally taking a risk in what feels like a decade. But the quality wasn’t there for me. It just sounds rushed and slapped together in a week or something. No problem with the sound he’s trying out, but let it cook in the studio for a year or so to get a fully fleshed out product. But it seems like even Drake isn’t taking this project seriously. This doesn’t give him a pass tho, it’s still bad imo. He should really take a break from music and take his time with his next project.

Drake honestly really impresses me with how he has constantly dropped mid-albums upon mid-album since 2016 that you start to appreciate the previous Drake project that you thought you despised. Honestly, Nevermind is an album that I don't know why Drake dropped a "House" album. and for the people who say "Drake does something different and people don't like it." My thing with that is that i don't mind Drake or any artists doing something new with his albums. Kanye has consistently done something new with his albums (we're never gonna get an 808s Part 2, an MBDTF Part 2, a Yeezus Part 2, or even a TLOP Part 2) and he do it very dang well. Drake's House album isn't even good House music. If I wanna listen to House Music, I would listen to my favorite French robots, Daft Punk and I wish that Daft Punk do another fantastic and groundbreaking House music album than Drake doing a lifeless bare minimum mid "House" album. I only liked two songs from this album, and I don't think I will go back to this album like I did for other Drake albums that I didn't even like with the examples of Views, Scorpion, and even CLB.

I think drake is at a point were he’s well established in his career so he feels he don’t need to prove anything, As a result, we get these lacklustered projects from him over the past 5 years. He’s not trying and it shows, on top of that, he lets rap beefs get to him which hinders his ability to make a good album. It’s impressive the level Drake stans will go to defend everything he does.. “You don’t like it cuz it’s not rap,” is such a cop out defense. When other artists like Kanye or Kendrick switch up their sounds, they criticize it, but when Drake does it it’s genius (regardless of quality). I’ve enjoyed plenty of r&b / pop / dancehall songs from Drake to know what he’s capable of creating when he ventures outside of rap. I’ve also listened to enough house/dance music (like SHM, deadmau5, Avicii, etc.) to know what’s good or not.

When you look at Drake’s entire discography then listen to this album, you realize that he’s done this type of music throughout his career, but it would typically be a one-off performance on an album. Songs like Show Me a Good Time, Get It Together, Little Bit, Take Care, With You, remind me of the records on this album. The only difference now is for the first time in his career, Drake didn’t take a commercial approach to an album. It’s still good work for what it is.

I think he focused on the art and quality in the first half of his career. I think since Views it seems like he's been okay with being corporate/focusing on the money aspect rather than artistry because of how lucrative his name/brand is during that time.
The only full length project I've liked from him since IYRTITL has been Dark Lane Demo Tapes and it's a bunch of B-Sides/Throwaways over the years which is telling.
He signed that 500 million dollar deal and it seems we'll be getting a more detached/commercialized/corporate/focused group version of Drake who will continuously look for a massive hit and phone in the art that he was once good at.

How I felt about the Drake album, commented before I finish watching this video: It's the most I've enjoyed a Drake project in years, but that doesn't mean much because I really haven't enjoyed a Drake project at all for a really long time. I think the album gets pretty boring after around halfway through, but I really like house music and minimal club beats, so I was invested for longer than I was expecting to be. I think it could have easily been my favorite project of his had he just gone a little bit more leftfield with the production choices, really leaning into a grimy, more DIY Jersey club sound rather than watering it down. My expectations were super low, so he managed to surpass them at least! I like Calling My Name and Liability the most, i think.

I agree with Shawn's assertion that whenever Drake attempts to delve into a different genre, those attempts are usually watered-down versions of that type of music. He ripped off Grime, UK drill, Afrobeat, Southern Rap and even Reggaeton before and those efforts ranged from decent to utter dogshit.
And as a jamaican, I must say that his "interpretation" of dancehall on Views was insulting and just another way to draw more attention to himself, and thus, boost his profile while making him look "cultured".

    • @polymerizedrecords
      @polymerizedrecords 2 года назад +10

I completely agree with you, and I might feel differently if he was doing something out of my culture, but I think it's almost impossible for an artist to understand various genres well enough (and dig deep enough) so that he can create something new, influential and respectful in multiple genres in a executable time frame.
Obviously you're more qualified than me to speak on this but when it came to Jamaican influenced music, I think that drake actually tried to put out something decent, but I guess that if you really study the history and the genre, creating music that fits within that world and is accepted by its originators is just hard to do.
Although I had contact with Jamaican music back in the first Dancehall takeover back in the late 90s, I still discovered a lot of Jamaican music after Drake dropped those songs, as hopefully more people did, and that is the biggest thing I got from that project.

I think he nailed the theme, most of the songs follow the same rhythm and also the beats weren't entirely bad but the writing... my goodness. people are saying it's passionfruit the album but I think a more accurate statement is his song get it together which is an amazing song and still respects the genre of dancehall/house (idk). i believe he's capable of making great music in this genre he either ran out of stuff to say, was using ghost writers on past music, or rushed the release either way I'm disappointed. still taking the popular stance that I'm happy he's doing something different, but again i feel like he needs to have more pride of his work and rewrite that shit.

There are some really good tracks on here, and as a whole if you have it playing in the background or at a function it actually goes crazy. But it's hard to rank this with his other projects due to the fact that it's soo different. I thought it was pretty decent, good background music that lets you move to it but much too much, the beats and Drake are pretty restrained to stay in a chill pocket on these songs, like the build up to a huge dance song right before the beat really drops and changes, but it stays in that warm up section the whole song. It was a chill project to me. The 21 sav feature was pretty outta place, and I loved the guitar section on tie that binds. But if it wasn't more than just background music for me I could very much see how people say it's boring.

  • @sachitechless

This album was fucking WEIRD. Not because of the fact Drake dropped a House record but off the fact that I was completely ready to write this record off as Drake trying to make an album of Hotline Blings without actually capturing whatever made that song work (which IMO I still don't like that song). It felt like House music made by someone who doesn't actually know what makes House music work, especially with how little the beats and Drake's vocals works.
And then Overdrive comes on... And Drake wakes up. Those three songs actually kind of hit, although I'd say hit in the way an okay Swedish House Mafia or Calvin Harris do, the penultimate track loses steam and then WHERE THE HELL DID THAT CLOSER JIMMY CROOKS COME FROM THAT WHAT THE HECK???
Also, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who heard the lyrics of this record and was definitely uncomfortable, same with that bed creaking sample was... uncomfortable.

But this is an extremely generic, cookie cutter house music album. I’m not faulting him for trying something new. I’m faulting him for allowing it to be this bland, especially considering that he’s had several fire albums before (everything before 2016).

These past few years though he has been just throwing anything out there and people just eat it up. CLB wasn’t worth the two year delay. And if I had to describe his music here lately it would be “lazy”.His features are still on point but outside of those it’s been disappointing. I find myself listening more to the old drake stuff more than his new shit.

I'm not a Drake fan but I agree with this, New Drake is 🗑. These albums he dropping now no will consider classics. Drake knows he can drop whatever these days and it'll sell like hotcakes purely off his name. Drake is too well of an established rapper now so he is like why try? "Honestly, never mind" is different, but different doesn't equal good. Drake does not sound right on the production on that project, plus the production is bland. So far the only song I see worth a damn is "Jimmy cooks", at least the production is more lively on that track, but maybe other tracks will grow on me, probably not, but I guess it's a possibility.

My principal complaint is that this album needed more vocal processing and editing. There was no need for 30 seconds and 16 bars of "Falling Back on MeeeEEEeeeEEE" in the first song. If he's going to have this much repetition, there should have been vocal harmonies to change it up. Hell, Currents has a section that has the "With every move" bridge that does this perfectly, so I don't know why it isn't in the rest of the album. It boggles my mind that RY X Carnage and 40 were producers on this album, but didn't do anything to play with the vocals. Like they were too afraid to make it less radio friendly or something. I don't know. I liked the album on first listen, but the more I sit with it, the less I like.

Here's how it will go. People will forget about this album.
Months later someone is going to use some of the songs on tik tok, remixed or not, and people will suddenly start vibing (perhaps including former haters).
Regarding the video here's a few points:
-I will agree to some extent with 7:40, but it goes both ways. People get extemely nitpicky about shit they would not care for if they listened to literally anyone else.
-The inclusion of "Jimmy Cooks" track gives off the same energy as "Bound 2" on Yeezus. It's this blatant statement : "i could still make shit you like, but i chose not to"
-The record itself isn't perfect, but i'd argue that's the appeal. There's some sort of vulnerability in that, that just got to me. Drake could just take his time, do million takes to hit absolutely perfect notes without autotune, pack the album with features and all that.
What he ended up doing was suprisingly refreshing.
But yea, that's just my take.

i think alot of people fail to realize that hip hop and rap for the most part is really popular in the united states and not as much in the rest of the world. generally speaking, electronic and dance music is a way more worldwide genre and i think Drake going that route is setting himself up to be an even bigger global artist. I think people need to realize that Drake's value isn't in him doing everything the best. It's more in that he takes everything and gives it a platform that artist as big as him usually don't touch until it's already palatable for the mainstream. He got killed when he started breaking into the London sound, dance hall, drill, etc but afterwards other mainstream artist are able to follow suit without the criticism. I think that he knows that he's done as much for himself that people will give him credit for anyway.
