I never had luck getting a magnolia to root. But Ive only tried one time with about 5 cuttings.I guess thats a blessing in disguise as they are messy and can get very big. The leaves are alot diffenrt than regular leaves and can dull a mower blade pretty quick if you are mowing them
With most cuttings rooting in water doesn't allow the roots that form to be adapted to the soil. They end up needing extra time after transplanting to adapt. Also plants that take longer to root will rot out in water eventually rather than form roots. I used a sand and bark shaving mix for the cuttings.
I have not tried it since this video again. Just lack of opportunity to get cuttings. This fall I plan to buy a Magnolia, a smaller one like Little Gem. I'll probably attempt cuttings on it once it's gotten established.

Have you tried the Magnolia again? If so, any success?
