I don’t think Bach would have agreed with your sentiment - the gospel points to life after death in the presence of the Lord Jesus to which Bach dedicated many of his works.
I cannot remember hearing a more perfect intonation from the vocalist in this work before. The chromatic and dissonant melodic intervals must be difficult for any singer; Mr. Mead hit every note perfectly the moment he began each note. Lovely singing!
Wonderful rendition. Again, I cried. I cannot but cry whenever I hear this aria. As I was starting to listen, I looked out the window and noticed that there was a soft snow falling on white-coated rooftops here in Brooklyn, NYC. I swear, I think Bach wrote this marvelous aria while looking out at a soft falling snow too, coating the rooftops of whatever German town he wrote this in. It just fits the mood, the atmosphere of this masterpiece of sadness. Then I inadvertently lowered my tearing eyes and saw my succulent plant in front of my window, which has a pot shaped like a skull in the manner of Dia de Muertos. The whole accidental mise-en-scene sent shivers down my spine--death draws near. We must be forgiven.

"Erbarme dich" is my absolute favorite classical piece. Every time I listen to it, I'm deeply moved by its profound emotion and haunting beauty. Bach's composition touches my soul in a way that few other pieces can. Truly timeless. I learned this song from a Belgian professor in Philosophy (prof. dr. Does all humanity have this profundity, which only a genius like Bach can probe? Is this what we would all find if we knew ourselves better? Or are there some whose souls span the deep sea and the mountaintop, while the rest of us walk on flat earth? This piece leaves me with questions. A human being, who loved pipe tobacco and coffee like so many of us, wrote this. Living adjacent to a boys dormitory, with a large family, in what must have been an environment bustling at best, chaotically interruptive at worst. Will anyone ever be able to communicate like this again? If an extraterrestrial race looks on our violence and cruelty, inhumanity, greed, and despair, and decides that we are better destroyed, like an infestation of ants, or cancerous sore, this is what I would play for them. We have betrayed all the best that we are. But have mercy on us.
