AEV Lift Kit Shakedown at Hidden Falls Adventure Park

  • The official shakedown run of my recently installed AEV 2.5" Dualsport RT Suspension lift with the 3" High Capacity Springs. I take it on the trails at Hidden Falls Adventure Park to see how well it handles mild to moderate trails and test out it's axle articulation and compare it to the previous stock "Xtreme Recon" suspension. I then give my overall take on the lift kit and current setup.

    Perfect timing. I just picked up my JTR last Wed after having the same lift installed, even the High Capacity springs. Then promptly flew to FL. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ So watching this in the hotel room is perfect. And hey, at least I’m in a Wrangler rental 😂. Can’t wait to get out at Wolf Den Run State Park, my home trails, and test out the lift. Where you were looked super fun.

    I have a ‘22 turn key AEV JL370 392. Actually flew to Wixom, Michigan and picked it up from AEV. I’m running the regular springs with 8100 shocks. With a full metal cloak skids set it weighs 5,720 lbs. The ride is absolutely phenomenal! I’ve had it at Sand Hollow, Johnson Valley and ran the Rubicon Trail. Enjoy your 392, it looks incredible with the new lift and tires.

    The 2.5” AEV lift and 37” BFG KM3 tires really allow the 392 to shine.

    I have a 2022 JLUR w/same lift & tires on methods w/a v-6, 6-spd manual, & factory 4.88’s. It easily runs 90 (but typically 80) mph down the highway with manners, gets 16mpg hwy & 16-17 city, and has completed Top of the World, Poison Spider, Metal Masher, etc., in Moab. I concur, AEV lift is a solid choice, has not left me wanting for more, and gets the belly off the ground very well (not to say I haven’t drug the belly).

      Very nice! I'm a manual transmission fan myself and I've owned two Jeep Gladiators with the manual and V6. That particular transmission they used, always left something to be desired but there is a nice aftermarket replacement for it. Sounds like it hasn't been an issue for you though! Perhaps it behaves differently in the JLU vs JT?

      @@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy Maybe b/c JLU is lighter? I wish there were more engine torque available to be able to take off in 2nd more when on the road. The tranny has been fine, but it's had two Rr locker sensors replaced by 15k miles. Haven't had problems w/recalled clutch, but I tend to keep RPMs low when on the clutch pedal, and don't stay on the pedal long, even when wheelin. Figured I'd drop a centerforce in it before too long. While I enjoy driving a stick Jeep, it's easier to rockcrawl an auto 🙂

    Considering getting the HD coils for my 382 as well. Do you feel they are too stiff for the road when unloaded? My boggest concern is too rough of a ride onroad.

      It's a legit concern. I was worried about them being too stiff as well. But, after 5 months of mostly unloaded, city driving with occasional overlanding and road trips, I've come to the conclusion that the trade-off is worth it. I think if you compare it to say, a heavy duty truck like a 3500 with leaf springs, or even some 2500 heavy duty's, this Jeep with the AEV HD coils rides fantastic. Now, if you compare it to some Jeep lift kits that come with a bit softer springs and all 8 adjustable control arms, then this definitely would feel a bit rougher, both on-road and off, but mostly off-road. But it's not like it's unbearable for most on-road driving. Compared to most cars and crossover SUVs, it rides better (absorbs bumps, solid feel, etc). This kit allows me to drive above 90 and feel pretty confident in how it drives. Not a sports car by any means, but really stable and confidence inspiring for a lifted Jeep on 37s. I hope that helps! I would totally purchase this lift again!

    i eventually changed the 5100 shocks to the aev 8100 bypass shocks. Night and day difference. Definitely worth the price. They are also better tuned to the hd springs.

      Will definitely consider getting them at some point. Were they a plug in play? I think I recall some extra serious steps in the instructions for those who had the 8100s.

      @@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy plug and play on my 2022 diesel rubicon. The front lower mounts for the shocks have a bracket to install to make them fit. The remote parts are just revnuts on the frame rail. Rears just bolted up.
      I ended up needing track bars with them to get the alignment correct. I did metal cloak front and rear adjustables.

      @@WolfOverland Interesting about the track bars. I had wondered if I should get a rear adjustable as well. I just happened to have the front Teraflex one that I used, just laying around from when I had my Mojave (was going to install it but never got around to lifting it). I figured might as well use it since it’ll dial it it more even though AEV says in the FAQs that is not necessary at 2.5 inches. I’m glad I did though.

      @@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy yes I recc it. The metalcloake one has the bend for a bigger spare too. My 37 fits fine. Could prob fit a 38

      I did the same on my JLUR and really like them over the 5100's. I just got the HD Springs a few weeks ago but haven't installed them yet.

      They are the stock "beadlock capable" wheels that come with the "Xtreme Recon" 35-inch tire package.

    I’ve read people saying the wheels need much less backspacing than the AEV wheels you have. Any issues with rubbing control arms while flexed and turning lock to lock?

      No rubbing at full lock or while flexed. These are the Xtreme Recon wheels that came with my Jeep from the factory. I believe they are similar in backspacing to the AEV Pintler wheels that are suggested with the kit.

      Sure! Do you know the engine that you have in your Jeep JL? These kits are built specifically based on weight and the engine can greatly affect that.

      Did you need to install a bigger Tire carrier in the back or did the stock one take the weight of the 37 just fine?

      @@MarkWillsLoanSigningSystem Nice! In that case, go to this link on the AEV website: www.aev-conversions.com/product/jl-2-5-dualsport-rt-suspension/
      Select the Doors, Drive Options, Engine options and Coil spring options that you prefer, and if you select the 2.5" kit with the "High Capacity" springs, that will bring you to the exact kit I installed. I also installed an optional adjustable front track bar, made by Teraflex: teraflex.com/jl-jt-hd-forged-adjustable-track-bar-front-0-6-lift.html . AEV says it's not necessary. But, I installed it just to get the front axle completely centered underneath the vehicle.
      The factory tire carrier handles the 37 just fine and the third brake light is adjustable so you can get it to clear a 37" tire.
      And no, I did not re-gear. It still feels every bit as fast as it did stock. In fact, in some cases it feels faster. I made a video about this if you're interested in seeing a comparison I did here: ruclips.net/video/GdNtW0s9Xz0/видео.html

      @@MarkWillsLoanSigningSystem This is the factory Mopar steel bumper and it is a modular bumper. It comes full-width but has removable end caps to make it into a stubby. I chose to remove the end caps to for better approach angles when off-roading.

    Would you recommend hd springs for a 4xe rubicon on 37s

      I would, especially with the added weight of the battery. But according to AEV's website, it doesn't show the "high capacity" springs option for the 4xE plug-in hybrid. www.aev-conversions.com/product/jl-2-5-dualsport-rt-suspension/

      I actually just spoke with them. The springs for the 4xe are specific due to the extra weight of the battery and they said they are almost identical to the high capacity springs.

      ​​⁠Oh nice! I’m glad they take that into account. When I had my 4xE and bought a used 2” Mopar lift, it only yielded about 1.25 inches in lift. It turned out they didn’t account for the added weight early on because they specifically listed those part numbers as working with the 4xE. I heard later on that they remedied this.

      Just measured it. 78 inches from it's highest point at the rear (has a slight forward rake when unloaded).

      They are a 17" x 8" wheel with +12 offset I believe.

      Yeah, that's why with the Xtreme Recon package they put the extended fender flare lip. It sticks out about an inch. Honestly I don't think it would really need it but they do that to be legal.

    It’s called a drive flange not a harmonic balancer.

      Yes. On the outer edge of the flange lies the harmonic balancer or “vibration damper”. Its even referred to in the AEV lift instructions. I believe this is specific to the 392 models as this is the first of my Jeeps to actualy have one.
