I feel like the vlogbrothers comment section is one of the rare sections on RUclips where people don’t just copy paste comments to get likes, but actually share their thoughts, feelings and concerns. I feel like "popularity is not the goal" is one of the best lessons I learned from my nerdy youth. I very much wish this lesson was much more widely known.
I wish I learned it so much younger. Alas!

I always pause to read the 2021 vision board and i am all for "MANIFESTING RADICAL EMPATHY"
As someone who's first language is German the phrase: "Schadenfreude is an overrated Schaden" is extremely funny
Can you translate it for those who don't understand German !?
Schadenfreude is an overrated damage
@@shreyashrivastava4840 it goes along the lines of "to be happy about (someone else's) harm is an overrated harm" but it's not easy to translate
Laughing about other people's misfortune (like in home videos) is overrated damage.
@@shreyashrivastava4840 I think English speakers use Schadenfreude the same way as we do, so that's the joy at somebody else's misfortune, but translated literally, it's "damage-joy". So if you just take "Schaden", that means damage. It's funny because you'd expect the phrase to go "Schadenfreunde is an overrated joy", but also "einen Schaden haben" (lit. to have a damage) is colloquial for being crazy/unreasonable about a certain thing. So it kind of fits after all. (Now I've probably over-explained, but I hope it makes sense!)
I usually would be “manifest radical empathy” because it’s my general goal everyday as someone who works with children, but since I just woke up I’m feeling more like “rocks”.

I started watching Vlogbrothers after seeing someone's tweet about "TOP 10 ANIMAL POWER MOVES". It sure changed MY world much, John! :)
I first found vlogbrothers through scishow in 2012 as a 12 year old in 6th grade. Now I'm a senior in college and vlogbrothers has definitely been the culture I am most proud to have grown up with.
"Smallpox was" really are the sweetest words. I've been learning so much about the smallpox vaccine lately (both from you and from Sawbones), and it's left me in awe of both how fragile we are and what humanity can do together.
If you enjoy epidemiology, I highly recommend the podcast "This Podcast Will Kill You" by young women who love to nerd out!
If you're really into smallpox I'd recommend the book The Relentless Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal. Its premise is basically what if there was a smallpox outbreak among astronauts on the moon. It was the first time I ever fully grasped how terrifying life could be before the smallpox vaccine and captured how deadly the disease was perfectly.
So all star lyrics as video titles was definitely a good idea.

it's crazy what this community has meant to me - i fell out when i was in a relationship that pretty much destroyed my core belief system and in the years of building that backup, i've refound y'all and it has felt like coming home. especially in the last year - i don't interact much with the community anymore (i've lost my zeal for internet friends that i had when i was junior high school and absolutely living for nerdfighteria) but this past year, you have made the aloneness that can be so suffocating just.... less suffocating through videos and live streams and just honesty.

I don't watch every VB video anymore, but I have listened to every episode of dear hank and john at least 6 times, that is where I get the most community-feel
I've never felt more a part of a community than Nerdfighteria at the moment. Let's keep it this way. ❤️
I genuinely think a lot of big youtubers would be better off if they had gone the vlogbrothers route and focused on their community rather than optimising for views. John and Hank seems to be much happier and more comfortable with their viewers than a lot of bigger youtubers who often appear either stressed or not in control of their audience.
I love this community and I love growing with this community. The coolest thing that’s ever happened is being able to facilitate a donation to P4A while I was working my first job. Second coolest is being an older person on Tik Tok watching kids learn about y’all and finding the community.

Honestly, as a relatively new nerdfighter but a long time general youtube user , the comments section of this channel is easily and immediately one of the best. This amount of meaningful exchanges are extremely hard to come by in a youtube comments section.
Also, in terms of community apart from the comments, from what little I have observed, I think I can say that nerdfighteria is a testament to the potential of youtube as a platform.
Important to note is such a community is a direct reflection of the effort being put into the content, so great going and thank you John, Hank, their team and the rest of Nerdfighteria 😁👍
