  • I asked the question, is aikido good for self-defense. In a world where self-defense is often equated with owning a gun, let's take a deeper dive into the realm of martial arts, particularly Aikido. 🥋💥
You've probably heard the Aikido bashing, the skepticism about its effectiveness in real-life self-defense situations. And sure, Aikido masters won't be found duking it out in the UFC octagon. But does that mean Aikido is not a good form of self-defense? That's a question I asked myself.. 🤔👊
Self-defense, as defined by legal standards, encompasses a spectrum of actions aimed at protecting oneself or others from harm. It's about using reasonable force to thwart violence or aggression. 🛡️💪
But here's the twist: Aikido isn't just about combat. It's not about pummeling opponents into submission. It's about harmony, redirection, and self-improvement. 🔄🙏
So, why choose Aikido over a firearm? Well, for starters, it's not always about escalating the situation with lethal force. 🚫🔫
Consider this: if someone pulls a gun or a knife on you, is attempting to disarm them worth the risk of getting shot? Perhaps not. That's where Aikido's philosophy of blending and redirecting comes into play. 🤷‍♂️🔪
But hey, if guns are your thing, there's nothing wrong with learning how to use them responsibly. Just be mindful of the risks involved, like stray bullets piercing through walls and endangering loved ones. 💔💥
Let's shift our perspective on self-defense. It's not just about fighting-it's about safeguarding yourself in all aspects of life. 🧠🥊
Consider the UFC fighters. Yes, they're skilled athletes, but they often emerge from matches battered and bruised. Is that really the epitome of self-protection? 🥊💢
Enter Aikido. It's not about beating adversaries; it's about mastering the art of falling, an essential skill in preventing injuries-because let's face it, falls can be deadly. 🤸‍♂️☠️
Just look at the tragic stories of Natasha Richardson, Jeanne Moreau, Jerry Stiller, and Franklin Covey-all lives cut short by falls. 😢💔
When you join an Aikido class, you're not just learning self-defense techniques; you're learning how to protect yourself holistically. 🌟🛡️
Sometimes, self-preservation means making simple lifestyle choices: exercising regularly, eating healthily, and avoiding harmful substances like excessive alcohol. 🍏🏋️‍♂️
Sure, saying no to that tempting dessert can be tough (who doesn't love ice cream?), but it's a small price to pay for your well-being. 🍦❌
And let's not forget the importance of safety gear, like wearing a helmet while biking-simple measures that can save lives. 🚴‍♂️⛑️
In essence, Aikido isn't just a martial art-it's a path to self-improvement, longevity, and mindfulness. 🌿🧘‍♂️
So, next time you consider self-defense, remember: it's not about becoming the ultimate fighting champion; it's about becoming the best version of yourself. 🏆👊
Join me on this journey of self-discovery and protection, where Aikido serves as a guiding light in a world filled with uncertainties. 🌟🥋

this is a good way to look at it. I no longer practice judo and taekwondo, but I remember so much of what I learned.

I enjoyed your stance on what 'Self-Defense' means. We definitely focus too much on the violence and not on the ways we can stay safe in everyday situations

Well what I learned from a quite a few years of studying Aikido and after many many years of kick boxing before that is that Aikido is a great martial for people who already know how to fight. The thing is that Aikido such an advanced martial art that at the lower levels its practical applications are not obvious. But if you want to see some aikido in more of a combat situation watch any of the Keanu Reeves John Wick moves. The fight choreography in those movies very effectively mixes combat Aikido with jujitsu. Well that's my take on it anyway.

I heard that O’Sensei would only accept students that were already a black belt in another art….just a rumor I heard.

@@ErikCalderon i did not know that. But I do know that every Aikido sensei I studied under was at least a Nidon in some other Japanese martial art. Back in the early 80's when I studied Aiki in Orlando my sensei was a guy named Ken Clark I believe he was originally a Goju guy and the other Sensei's that I studied with were both Judo guys. Oh and you are totally correct about learning to fall. I think Aikido is the only art that teaches falling and rolling and how to break your fall and really drills that skill in. Even now almost 40 years later that falling and breaking the fall saved my life a couple years ago when I slipped on some grease in the kitchen, if not for Aiki that would have been damaged vertebrae for sure. I went back to kickboxing in the 90's, but all in all I would say the the years I studied Aiki were very beneficial. The concept of the dynamic sphere, the knowledge of momentum, and inertia, the physics of combat, especially dynamic combat, not so much static combat, but dynamic combat, that knowledge is priceless. When I think about Aiki now I think of it as an integration into other skills. Like Bruce Lee said "take what works and throw away the rest"

Great video. I totally agree with your concept of self defense. We all assume it involves another person or multi-person fights-that’s not often the case. The biggest culprits are the things you mentioned. It’s your diet, your lifestyle, and potential injuries that stem from bad diets or unhealthy lifestyles. Incorporating this philosophy is important for a healthy lifestyle.

I am an old Aikidoka. I have been practicing for 56 years. Nowadays, there's too much bashing Aikido and way too much on comparing any art to MMA. This is ridiculous. If those guys looking for the most lethal art would spend a month in jail, or bedridden in a hospital, or in a wheel chair, they would stop looking for ways to hurt or getting hurt.
Self-defense is not only surviving physical confrontation. It's more about protecting yourself in advance.
Invest in your health, longevity and peace of mind.
Never run into a fist fight.
If you have to face a physical attack, use any art in moderation.
If they have machine guns, and you are empty handed, escape.
    Life is precious.

    In summary:
If you signed up for a traditional martial art under the pretext of learning to "defend yourself and others" you may have been lied to. Learn martial arts to become a better person. If you want to become a fighter, find a way to practice fighting.
    Bullet points
