I find struggling with my own ego to be very challenging as a beginner. Taking corrections from sensei, listening to senior students, feeling like I should know a technique when a newer student arrives - it's very hard to let that all go.
Thanks for the video Erik! I just started aikido classes. I’ve taken two classes so far and I’m very frustrated for not remembering anything and not being able to perform techniques as smooth as everyone else. But aikido is helping me to be more humble, patient and persistent. Your video helped me to understand my frustration and motivated me to keep practicing it. Thank you!
Great video starting Aikido beginning of this year, frustrated out of skull, never feel so stupid during class, but Alas I love it Thank you for your wise words
Hey Erik, that and the biographical video of yours were really inspiring !! At the age of 51 + 1/2; I've joined an Aikido dojo as a beginner (my 1st class is next week); and I'm gonna stick with it no matter what for I see the gains as being for a lifetime - self-worth turning conflict into harmonious relationships. I think today I still had a 1% doubt.....but it dissolved after your video - karmically manifested on RUclips. Thanks for the uploads !! Sudipto (from Bristol, UK)
@@ErikCalderon Thanks for replying. In my class today I fell in the wrong way and hurt my rib; it hurts ! However I learnt quite a bit in 1.5 hrs; its so interesting....... Thanks to the other Aikido practitioners, who were so supportive; I really look forward to more. Thanks again !
Yes, I went to Japan to do Aikido. But to stay more than 3 months, back then, you needed a visa. It was my senior year of University, so I just did a student exchange program with Boston University, which gave me the student visa, and while completing my senior year, I trained in Aikido just about everyday.
Aikido sounds to be the most relevant commeasurate sensible martial art there is. The video was excellent, but I have to ask. Is it worth going through years of pain so that’s in the rare event you are attacked you avoid it once? And I am no stranger to pain and have a high threshold. I was recently mugged in South America and came out well using T ai Chi and man’s best weapon: quick wits.
Have you seen this one: ruclips.net/video/asFZusyWBKY/видео.htmlsi=vLGuvuSLnDRYpF_v I was a bit shocked and just might edit out that scene, but then again, it’s what I made at the time.
@@ErikCalderon yes i have seen it. He's joke and a half. My dad was 187th Airborne and fought in Korea, he was a badass that actually killed unknown numbers. I have been around many many real badass and those one the mpvie screen or practicing crap in a dojo donnot impress
It's funny, I had a student once that had gone through buds training to become a Navy Seal, he made it to almost the very last day and tore an ACL, which pulled him out. He would come to class and do 500 pushups before we even started. I loved training with him. He then moved to Dallas and was asked to leave from 3 Aikido dojos (because the instructors couldn't throw him)... It was the best training I've ever had! Getting too old to do that kind of stuff anymore!
I want ro start aikido but im scared of the falls, i barley even know how to do a forward roll (for gymnastics) so im kind scared of getting hurt 😅 Could you tell me, is there any reson for me to wory? If so, do you know what i could do about it?😅
Yes, the falls are pretty scary. A very soft mat to help you overcome that fear might help! But, once you learn to roll, you should become much more comfortable with the falls.
I really want to learn boxing but my area doesn’t have boxing and I’m slightly underweight but I think I can manage it I struggled a lot oh yeah this reminds me I used to drink tons and tons of milk it made my bones super tough and every person that I challenge the bloody knuckles I come out victorious I chipped my dogs tooth by accident on my bones

It is difficult to learn Aikido without partners and an instructor. I tried, during COVID. to teach online, but it felt very difficult. When I wanted to learn Aikido, I moved to Japan to study there.

Yes, that's the paradigm of the class. The Sensei will demonstrate a technique in front of the class and then everyone will work on that technique. The Sensei will walk around and help students understand the particular movements they are working on.
yeah, a sport you can do when you're old is a sport that won't tax your body much and where your opponents are compliant, you know, like basket weaving, or knitting/crochet, or reading girly romance novels, or aikido, yeah, any of those can give you a lifetime of feeling like you've done something. Let's see, Rosey Gier did needle point and, AND wrote books about it, oh, and he played professional football and was a secret service agent (he was the one who tackled and arrested Sirhan Sirhan who assassinated RK), ummmm, no aikido there. You mentioned frustration but you failed to mention the true source of it, it's the rolling of eyes, and yawns of the people you tell about your aikido crap
@@ErikCalderon in a real life situation where a flurry of punches and kicks are coming at you you will have no answer. Put on a set of mma gloves and fight a 1 minute round and you will see. There are some Aikido styles that have deleted Shikko from their syllabi. As for me, I still do it. But I am old school.
Didn’t know that. Shikkou 膝行 is such an important basic movement that helps us learn to turn our hips. I guess I’m old school too…
