- I left Kunming and visited Yanjin, the narrowest city in the world!! Although Yanjin was quite popular on RUclips and Instagram, it remains quite unknown in China.
The trip to Yanjin offers stunning landscapes, when I reached, it was already mid-night!
The next day, I was so thrilled to discover this special city!

For those wondering "why would they build a city in such difficult terrain," she mentions the reason at the end- a salt mine. Salt is readily available and cheap today, but it was once highly valued, primarily for food preservation.

18:56 I have the exact same experience as a foreigner who has travelled a lot in China. The further you get from the bigger cities and the touristy areas, the friendlier people become. You would think that the poorest people are most likely to try to scam some extra money out of you, but I find that this is almost never the case. The poorest people in China are the most honest, the most hospitable--and the most interesting.
I'd believe this is because they don't see many foreign people, so aren't necessarily in the mind set of the fact that "you have money". Plus most of the people who are in the city are after money, whereas most in the country are happy with their lives. 😊

This is mostly the same in Mexico and a ton of other countries around the world. Often, the less fortunate are the most compassionate.
This is definitely common around the world. Big cities concentrate many of life’s stresses which people either internalize ruining their own health or take out on people around them which makes for a terrible place to live.
I can vouch for this too. As a tall white guy I always stood out like a sore thumb. But people are extremely friendly in those regions away from the major cosmopolitan cities. However some do tend to stare, which is a bit irritating and in the past we often had folks come up to us and ask my wife (who’s originally from China) if they could take a selfie with her white guy. This is not the case in major international cities like Shanghai or Beijing, where there’s a big amount (at least pre-Corona) of expats and tourists, so people are used to it.
Glad China is finally open again to travelers! My wife and I couldn’t go back to visit her family since the Pandemic lockdown travel restrictions. I mean she obviously could’ve gone by herself, but our son was born right in January 2020 so he would’ve technically not been allowed in either with his German passport, and all travelers had to subject themselves to these awfully restrictive quarantine procedures of 14+ days in some quarantine hotel where you’re not allowed to leave your room AT ALL (imagine that with a baby/toddler, suicide!).
Anyways, we finally have her parents over for a visit for the first time since his birth, and we soon shall go back later this year! I cannot wait! Though, who knows how they’ll stare now when they see a Chinese/Caucasian couple with a super adorbs cute mixed 3 year old… 😅
I don't think that most outsiders can really appreciate what you said. Just the fact that there are highways and rail and all kinds of engineering projects in these areas is truly amazing. One has to see it to really understand.

I am from India, staying quite close to the Indo China border in Uttarakhand and I just love her videos of China. I always wondered what goes beyond the border, beyond the himalayas in China and looking at these videos I get a glimpse of that. Love your videos, love this Chinese girl's spirit of travelling.

@@earlysda What I meant is that most people are just living their lives, working hard, caring for their children and try to make a living. How they do that maybe different and what they believe maybe different, but at the core, we are basically doing the same thing all over the world.
@@StudioHoekhuis Ivo, have you watched OUR videos where they show how they are trying to stop the horrific child sacrifices and other things that I cannot mention? There are literally millions of kids every year being sold by their parents, and the vast majority of these are from several African and Asian countries.
As a Chinese I love watching these videos too. I want to travel all over China.

An excellent program introduces smaller remote towns of China. She is very good, practical and not showy, has a nice warm personality. Her English sounds like her native language ( much better then most professional translators), but she is also very good in her Chinese that she can switch from one language easily to other and kept the flow continuity, which is remarkably smooth and natural.
The place is so spick and span and the river is so so clean.. there is no rubbish floating or flowing around. Very few places in the world where you can find no rubbish lying around. Well done Chinese people.
This is fascinating! I am from the U.S. and we don’t get to see the intimate details of China like you are showing. I just love your videos. That baked potato looked so good! Here in the U.S. you have to get fast food. There is not usually someone just selling something simple like that. It’s much more healthy.
Once you travel in Asia and I really mean pretty much anywhere in the vastness that is Asia, you become hooked for life! A diaspora of people. Incredible and at times mind boggling street foods. Fried Tarantula anyone? How about freshly skinned snake, or raw horse meat or the hump of a bactrian camel? Often insanely cheap prices,except Japan,Singapore and South Korea. Sublimely beautiful ancient architecture, incredible variety of scenery and climates varied cultures, history, languages and the cradle of all the major religions. Bustling mega cities juxtaposed with simple village lives. A multitude of gorgeous beaches, delicious tropical climates to the extremes of Himalayan winters and deserts to jungles. I've travelled through 25 Asian countries, some multiple times and am still drawn to explore much, much more.

Out in the countryside you can find people selling stuff in a similar way sometimes, and in major cities you can find healthier food, but true, the US is mainly suburbs, and in most suburban areas it's hard to find simple/healthy food.

One of my biggest regret while we were living in China for 5 years was not being adventurous enough to visit the smaller cities… ive always imagined smaller towns to be more culturally interesting and people friendlier. Thanks for your videos, now im yearning to go back someday. ☺️ we missed our life there back there 9 years ago.

The China of 9 years ago is not the China of today. I'd recommend you wait until the CCP has been deposed, before going back.
I lived in China for ten years and I loved randomly visiting obscure places in the country away from the usual tourist traps. However, on the downside, even though many of the places I visited were beautiful and the people fantastic they were often very poor.
I think it's like that in most countries. The further you get from city centers and more globalized people you get a real taste for what the place and people are actually like. I think even in the USA this applies.
Wanna hear something curious? I'm from Mexico, born and raised and this reminds me of some parts of Mexico SO SO MUCH. It's amazing, all the food on the streets, we also sell potatoes and corn like that. The little Tofu place looks like any modest "Loncheria" in Mexico. I love it

@@noahmcdarby5417 well... yes. but also there's a culture that comes with poverty and being taken advantage of by the rich. humans in poverty tend to react the same way and band together in the same way. It's interesting to see that across the globe we can see ourselves and our homes reflected even if we've been exploited and abused by the rich or our government, there's still life and hope and love at the basic core of humans that won't go away. human greed is the same across cultures but also human resilience

I'm from Italy and recently I made friends with a few people who migrated from China. They invited me alot of times to have lunch/dinner at their place. I remember how weird I looked at some of the stuff they cooked (unlike the dishes you get served in restaurants, which usually are very Europe-friendly), thankfully enough I had enough courage to have a bite and now I'm falling in love with chinese cuisine more every day. This video, apart from making me want to travel to China sometime, also made me quite hungry!

The more videos I see about "hidden" China (rural areas, cities that aren't tourist traps, places that are off the beaten path) the more China reminds me of Appalachia. Maybe its just because I live in Appalachia but really these little mom and pop shops, people living precariously on the mountainside over a river, a nice lady giving away food when she doesn't actually get business, the openness and friendliness of people, the pride of the local history, the attitude about "eh natural disasters happen you just get used to it", even the look of the place all reminds me of where I live.
Its so funny seeing such similarities between regions and people on opposite sides of the world.

We have seen Yanjin through several travel vlogs but this is the first time we got a street level visit. The baked potato and tofu looks delicious.

The river is so clean, I couldn't even find a single plastic or paper near the bed, that is really amazing, it really shows how much people care about the surrounding environment.

The streets are so clean… being from india, I might relate the scenery being similar that of himachal or shivalik ranges (except infrastructure,i have never seen so tall buildings in the mountains) but I appreciate how clean and neat the streets are. Not a single spec of plastic. That would never be possible in India.

I really enjoyed this video my friend . The mountain houses by the river look like they could be flooded by the rise of the water level during a storm . The streets are full of people living their lives and the children seem so interested in you making your video . The people also seem to be very kind and willing to help make the visit to Yanjin a very pleasant time and a wonderful stay . I'm from America and I like channels like this a lot. In America we think of ourselves as the diverse melting pot and everyone else as homogenous. But places like China and India are just as diverse in a different way with all the linguistic and cultural differences. We tell foreigners that each American state is different from the next but actually the states are nowhere near as different culturally as the differences found across big Eastern countries. (geographically of course America is very diverse but I think everybody knows that).
Its really just American Large-Mid cities that are diverse.
And you kinda seem to be forgetting that America has only just recently been taking its racism/bigotry issues somewhat "seriously" so a lot of time was lost in encouraging the growth of places where differences thrive. Most of America is plain as whitebread boring because they'd push the immigrants to for long time into cities/ lesser "desired" areas aka redlining until it became destinations many eventually wanted to go to/ heard about. The outer burbs was often reserved for white people and bam. Every suburb in America looks the same and boring and unimaginative.
@royroy8697 the suburbs aren't supposed to be fun, they're supposed to be clean, orderly and civilized lol. Also 92% of China is Han Chinese, doesn't seem to diverse to me lol. Granted that's not an issue because diversity is not really a strength, seeing as most of the best countries on this planet are homogeneous 🤷♂️
@@BoredInTheCommentsnah......there are tons of sub-groups among Han Chinese that speak very different dialects or languages, have very different cultural traditions, food, even with visible physical appearances.
they just identify themselves as Han-Chinese ethnicity. it doesnt mean they are very similar in all aspects.
The funny part is that some of us try to tell Americans that the US isn't quite as uniquely diverse as they think, and most of them still don't believe it! I lived in the US for several years and for a foreigner, I was able to make myself understood with just English from one coast to the other. That's not the case in a lot of smaller countries than the US... even some countries that are smaller than some US states.

Thank you for making videos like this… I’m living the typical 40 hour a week American life with little ability to travel abroad at this time due to work, family and having young children. Although I’m well traveled within the US I’ve only been a few other places around the world besides the normal tourist traps. Videos like this help me see other places I’d normally never know anything about so thanks for sharing!

Even from the first view, i fell in love in this place. Close to nature, not too modern and not too cosmopolitan like. Yet still not too rural and a great place to visit. I am glad that you included the transportation part of the journey in your video. To me, that's part of the fun. In my opinion, China probably has the best public transport system in the world. You can get to almost anywhere in China with public transport. Some of them probably illegal, but it gets you to where you want to go. Keep up the good work.

I was in Yunnan in 2012 for two weeks, shamefully I dont remember all the names of the cities i visited but the road you travel at 5.00 in your video looks EXACTLY like the road I was on in a local bus. Maybe alot of roads look like that but for me it was very memorable. The whole trip was amazing. I love Yunnan.
I remember we went to Li Jiang, and Kunming, and Dali but we also went to few cities in the south by the Mekon River.

As always you have educational videos of China, which I find to be interesting. I find it sad for the average westerner to travel because of maybe political climate and Covid. It is hard enough for me being in my 60's to travel. I find you very cordial in the way you speak and respectful about these areas you film with the people. Wow, this series is really showing me a whole new China. As an American I only get exposed to the culture and people of the big cities in China. Apparently, as it is here, people are more polite and welcoming in smaller cities. This is really eye opening and changes my mind about visiting.
This is one of the most obscure destinations a person could go to. Very interesting place that many people will never see in person. Thank you for sharing that part of the world in Yanjin, Yunnan.

It is so stunningly beautiful! This looks very much like the Hubei Province's Three Gorges area. My wife is from Yichang city which rests right along the Yangtze River. A really amazing place. I have visited Guiyang and some smaller places in Guizhou, I love the mountain and forest scenery but I never saw anything as amazing as this. You are a star. 😀
I was lucky to have spent four years in Qingdao, and visited Yunnan. You capture the spirit of the people in a way a foreigner like me only wishes to. We need a genuine channel like this to bring the beauty of China to the rest of us. Thanks!

@@hrmsdai As she IS a Chinese citizen, it’s completely irrelevant WHO her “boyfriend” is-or whether he did the filming , production, downloading, etc, or not. Chinese citizens are NOT allowed to film in China, “represent” China in any way (including as a tour guide, historian, host, etc) without CCP permission (who review all content and edit out anything they don’t like before allowing it to be downloaded)
There are hundreds of thousands of CCP Internet Security Analysts-whose only job is to scour Western media sites for content downloaded by Chinese Nationals; the Government spends (far) more on this (and the massive army of internet trolls they use to leave “pro-China” comments on Western sites) than they spend for all Chinese police departments, combined…A channel as high-profile as hers would never miss their intent supervision….The Government ranks “soft propaganda “ (such as “Always-Happy-And-Interesting-Chinese Woman’s-Travels-Showing-Happy-Chinese” videos) as being extremely important in influencing people’s opinions on China….
Enjoy the vids-just know : EVERY, single trip (and many of the “common folk” she happens to interview along the way) have been chosen & pre-approved by the government, and anyone interviewed who didn’t show appropriate “contentedness” have been edited out….(You also might ask yourself how a young woman, from a “lower-middle-class” family-as she mentioned on one of her vids-can afford to pay for several years’ worth of non-stop travel….airline tickets….hotels….train fares, not only within China-but throughout Europe) ? And all, with no visible means of support (no, what she makes from RUclips wouldn’t even come close) …As she said at the end of her LAST trip, “I’ve been traveling non-stop for seven months now”…. Judging also by the professional camera crew she now has accompanying her, I would wager that she is being completely subsidized by the CCP, who see the propaganda value of her channel….If you spend enough time in China, you begin to understand how they work….
Like I say, enjoy the travels-just always keep in mind that each episode is as carefully choreographed as any off-Broadway play….
I have just discovered your channel and honnestly this is the best travelogue video I have seen since forever. You have just nailed it! Please don't become like other travel youtubers with their flashy overproduction and pretentiousness. I really love your down-to-earth approach and more naturalism.
At 9:38 you say “Some of the buildings may look slum-ish to you,” I imagine addressing primarily a U.S. audience … and I must admit, to my eyes initially it looked quite run down, especially after living in a major U.S. city for nearly four decades.
But I grew up originally in Caracas, Venezuela, in the 1970s and early 1980s, with my Venezuelan family (I have dual nationality, and family in both the U.S.A. and in Venezuela), and what these scenes reminded me of most was leaving Caracas on short trips to visit any other city or town along the Venezuelan coast, or even more, traveling inland to cities nearer to our plains or to our rainforests, or west to some of our rugged Andean cities, where it’s not unusual to find a mix of large windowless concrete buildings right alongside wooden shacks, 100-year-old houses, a few modern mansions, and makeshift homes improvised from cinderblocks and corrugated tin, all right alongside one another.
People underestimate how rapidly global populations exploded in the twentieth century, and across the Global South development proceeded unevenly, with money concentrating in the metropolises and only gradually trickling out to countries’ other regions … but everywhere people needed to be housed … and the Global North’s colonial mindset meant exponentially much more wealth was extracted from the Global South than was ever invested back into it, so the resources with which to build were scant.
So outside of the major urban centers - and even sometimes within them - you see some real contrasts in building quality, a LOT of concrete (the twentieth century’s most efficient construction material), and a lot of really hasty un-ornamented construction … which is still an improvement over sleeping rough. And people can be quite happy there. Or not, depending on access to healthcare and education and other necessities. But either way, the dream always remains to move to the bigger, prettier, more prosperous city.
And in truth you can find these contrasts in the U.S.A. too - although they are certainly not publicized - by traveling through the South or the Bible Belt states, in the liminal spaces between major cities and agricultural areas; on a road trip, venture away from Miami/Orlando anywhere along Florida’s panhandle, and you might think you were suddenly in Azerbaijan, in some rundown former Soviet outpost along the Caspian Sea, navigating dusty streets beneath tangles of power lines, and surrounded by low cracked concrete from which peer out hollow, staring eyes.
Anyway, thank you for this look at less-seen China! It may surprise you that glimpses of your country bring back such vivid memories of mine … but perhaps it’s not so surprising: since the mid-twentieth century, all of us - Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia - have had more in common than not.

The Yangtze is the third longest river in the world, the longest river in Asia and the longest river to flow entirely within one country. The battle of the Red Cliffs, considered one of the most important battles in Chinese history was fought between the forces of the southern warlords Liu Bei and Sun Quan against the northern warlord Cao Cao was fought on the Yangtze. the world’s largest hydropower project, The Three Gorges Dam is also located on the Yangtze River and produces about 84.6 billion kilowatt hours of energy annually.
What an incredible video! I loved the format, the way you explore the city, engaged with the locals, as well as getting an insight into how life is like in these remote regions. I would love to travel to places like these myself, but I find it so incredibly hard and stressful when you can't communicate. However, videos like these aren't just travel videos, they are so much more, they are windows into a completely different world than our own, which most people can't/won't travel to. They are snippets of history, with beautiful stories and photo. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole video, subscribed and I know I will get excited whenever you post anything new! I like the way you showed this city. Yes, it looks a little bit decayed in places but that also adds to its special charm. The people there seem very nice. I loved the children and the grandmother selling food on the street. Watching this video will be the only way most people would ever have a glipse of that place.. Your English is really good, almost native, and I noticed you put a lot of effort into showing part of China in a way that people can't experience if they don't speak Chinese. Thank you again.
