- On April 30, 2023 we were able to hang with Jonathan Camey at Lakewood Church for their Sunday service. While there, their Director of Audio, BK Beard was kind enough to spend time answering our questions and walking us through the drum mics around the kit.

That overheard placement is my preferred position because that’s ideally what I WANT to hear vs how people put it traditionally
Knowing the type of lapel mic and having the conversation with the drummer to have no cymbals during the pastor's time shows very forward thinking and preeminent problem solving. Way to go!
Indeed.
I’ve definitely always wondered why the overheads were behind. Mystery solved now lol. The cymbals have always sounded great! I’m guessing the shotgun microphones are also helping with the cymbal mix. I’m also guessing pastor Joel’s lapel is picking up some of the ambient sounds in front of him from the congregation. Great information! Thank you for the video!
Thank you for the RIg Run Downs! I wanna see another approach from the channel where we talk about being a "Worship Drummer" and still delve more into the word. I still believe that these people are used by God not just in Music but in Worship Leading, and ministering to the people.
Thanks for this! I had the privilege to meet BK and u guys got a great interview from one of the best! ☺️👍🏼
Awesome! Thanks.
Thanks Isaac!
I'm excited!!!
No drummer says that bigger cymbals equal louder volume lol, really the bigger the darker (lower pitched tone). The thicker a cymbal is equals louder because the cymbals can ring a lot more. For CCM & worship in general you want to use dark, big & thin cymbals for a nice wash, quicker decay and darker sound to act as a complement to the songs and not cut through the mix ringing high. My personal best recommendation for churches who only play modern worship music like Bethel, Upperroom, Hillsong & etc is:
24" Ride, 20" & up crashes and 16" hi-hats. Anything smaller than that won't give you the industry standard sound as far as that nice wash and dark tone. Some of my favorite brands (from cheap to expensive) are:
Dream (Bliss series) -> Heartbeat (Epic & Jazz) -> Sabian (HHX Complex) -> Istanbul (Agop)
Ps: note I didn't mention zildjian even tho they make great cymbals they're way up there in price and in that price range I'd highly suggest going with Heartbeat or just saving a little bit more for Istanbul 😄😄
If you are able to get them, i can highly recommend pergamon cymbals. Handmade turkish cymbals but not one of the big name brands but great quality, amazing sound, and thus far, they've held up despite them being really thin🙌 I'm currently running their 24" etna soft jazz ride/crash and their 22" etna soft jazz crash after recommendation from a norwegian seller that acquires some more unknown brands and has some of the best prices here in norway along with demo videos. Just asked him for his recommendations on great worship cymbals and he told me he just got these and thought they would fit beautifully, while wanting some feedback in live setting. So he told me if I didn't like them he'd cover shipping completely and give me a full return. Happy to say I'm still playing them and considering either a 26" ride crash or 20" crash from same brand, maybe both😅
The shure kick mic is a Beta 91, not a 98.
Yes, you are correct.
You're absolutely correct! Can't believe I mixed those up 🙂
what were the OH mics? I may have missed that!
overheads brand?
16” K sweet crash, 17 Sabina hhx crash. 18” meinl byzance crash whatever one sounds washier for you. 18” Sabian AAX ozone crash 18” Efx zildjian crash
Typical church visuals trumping over audio excellence.
