I feel vindicated knowing that even an incredibly skilled speedrunner like you hates the marauder. I thought the first marauder encounter was really badass, then they just kinda kept coming as normal enemies, which retroactively made the marauder much less cool. The game just Stops when the marauder spawns and forces you to focus only him, and I'm glad to know that I wasn't just hallucinating not hitting his shield when he spawns ghost wolves even though I didn't shoot him. Thank you marauder for teaching me to weapon swap, but fuck you for coming back afterwards and for ganking me with all your friends.
Also my actual biggest complaint about him is that he makes the Unmaykr and BFG into shitty joke weapons. Like are they supposed to be reality warping, planet busting god weapons? Or can they be blocked by some random mob's transparent riot shield? bruh
Honestly, my exact complaint with the Marauder is that it is just boring to fight, not difficult. It has inconsistencies and just brings the game to a hault when in normal combat. Just a very repetitive boring enemy with the difficulty curve similar to that of learning not to put a fork in a microwave
the most accurate interpretation of the fun zone yet. ggs strmr 8:37 also pretty sure that's an extra life warp game teleports you back to the last place you were on the floor when you died after misinterpreting the definition for "the last place you were on the floor", usually from a messed up mantle
I honestly love the idea of the marauder, and I honestly didn’t think that the marauder was too hard of an enemy, also, if you use the super shotty and the ballista it barely takes time at all to kill
2:57 I had this BS happen to me in a particular section in Blood Swamps in TAG1. You know the one, where the green dog is creating a "safe zone" of sorts. In that section, there's a part where you're fighting a turret and a Marauder in that limited area. The Marauder would routinely go out of that area, get himself damaged, pull up the shield and spawn a dog, all the while I'm trying to eliminate that turret. Took me multiple tries and specific strategies to ensure I don't get melted by the turret while I'm trying to fight the Marauder or don't get hacked or shotgunned by the Marauder while trying to eliminate the turret. Fun part was not having any ammo for Ballista or Heavy Cannon, and having to get out of the safe zone to get those ammo pickups.
I was fighting a maurauder when he turned green but a zombie hit him from behind so he activate his shield and shotguned me, also if you are far enough they will start sprinting at you (without their axe) and when they reach you its a guaranteed green light. (Good for cheesing him)
Challenge idea: I call it hide and seek, Every arena has one archville (on top of normal enemies) an archville programmed to never attack the player at all and stay as far away from the slayer as possible and when it summons it always summons another archville with the same fearful properties as well as the normal spawns of enemies, if not controlled any and all arenas can outbreak into an army of archies and other enemies that constantly flood the arena If this challenge is even possible to get working it would be pure insanity to see in action
I don't dislike the marauder as much as some, at least not in the way it appears in the main games and DLCs. The dog is, solely because of how it can be activated by other demons, is the absolute worst feature of the ENTIRE franchise. I'd say the the bugs are pretty bad, but in my experience the whole game is buggy as hell, so although the Marauder makes these bugs worse because of how cheezy it is, ID just has difficulties in general implementing a lot of their enemies so they work consistently
THIS is the kind of speedrunner I admire. They not only show their skills on how they complete the game as fast as possible, but they ALSO teach you on how they accomplish said skills
The arena ending, and this is a total assumption with zero proof whatsoever, but maybe the arena ending trigger requires a certain value to be reached, with light demons being worth the least, and super heavy the most. If the arena is only maruaders, you would reach your quota way faster than normal. Once again, total assumption, no proof.
Possibly for the arenas ending randomly, it could be that the remaining marauders are coded as zombies which will just die of cringe sometimes when you kill the last demon in the arena. For example the doom hunter fight spawns zombies as well as imps and soldiers, so maybe after you killed DH you just had to kill the non zombie marauders and then the others despawned.
I was not expecting a clip of dad playing Eternal at the start. Funny video man! very entertaning seeing a mix of speedrun strats and goofing around with a messy mod
8:34 - I dunno if this was ever answered, but my impression is that it's likely the Extra Life has "checks" for where to respawn you in the event of a death. Like a manager of some sorts. Usually it can respawn you pretty much where you are, but systems like this that "pick up" the player after falling for example, can bug out and if they're poorly programmed, you can end up respawning on top of a pit. In this case, I think the respawn could not immediately put you back where you were, because, as I analyzed the frames... a marauder was right in your face as you died, on the right of the screen. You were also in mid-air, so it's possible respawning you here would either collide with an enemy or cause some kind of collision error or something else with the world mesh. The extra-life system then probably took this as meaning you fell into a pit, and grabbed the nearest ledge from which you could've fallen or the nearest "respawn point" available. This caused you to respawn outside the arena next to a ledge. That's my hypothesis.
I actually like how the marauders slow the game down a bit. You have to decide between fighting the demons around him, giving him your full attention, or risking both. He's also one of the most agile demons in the game, so I don't find it hard to separate him from the rest of the group. Due to his difficulty and status among fans, taking one down quickly is just plain satisfying man!
I love the human trait of making hard things even harder for the fun of it. It also shows humans like hard tasks but we also have to thoroughly enjoy it otherwise we hate it.
as both an ultrakill AND Doom fan the urge to parry does not go away in doom I have died so many times trying to parry when that doesn't exist. Why am I commenting this here? IDK
upon my return to doom eternal I realized that the marauders are really easy to kill. My strat: super shotgun + ballista. Shoot when the eyes flash with the super shotgun then hit it with a ballista shot. It takes like 20 seconds max. Took some advice from other RUclipsrs to keep him at mid range and holy shit it works so well. Just gotta be smart about how you play.
6:03 Wowee, I did not know any of these things. I was wondering why all these videos had such fast switching... Jeez, this is going to revolutionize my gameplay. Also, 15:00, that Maurader made a very quizzical noise.
The armored baron, Tyrant/Cyber Demon, and Archevile are harder. Except when there's a screacher there. That platform in TAG 2 pissed me off so much. I kinda love the Marauder, though. I hate him. But I love him.
Someone should create a mod that replaces every demon with a marauder but the replaced demons powers are infused into the marauder whilst the marauder still keeps it's own powers
15:35 I'm pretty sure I know why the first half had a Doom Hunter, but the second didn't: the first one counts as a boss, and the other 2 are just super heavy. And I'm assuming bosses don't get randomized because they're more hardcoded (and don't use the standard spawning code).
Maybe it's just that the marauder is supposed to be super easy on "hurt me plenty", but it's always seemed pretty easy to me. Just get the ballista and super shotgun, and make sure to dodge and time it right.

Also, just a nitpick about 3:07. That possessed Marauder rarely gets staggered. I was only able to get him staggered with headshots with Ballista or dangerously close range with SSG. It was the hardest Marauder fight of the game so far. I'm in TAG2, in that room which spawns 2 Doom Hunters, a Hell Knight, a Baron, a Pain Elemental or two I think, a possessed Mancubus, Cyberdemon and probably more, so I don't know if there are harder Marauder fights than this. But at this point, Marauder is rarely even the most dangerous enemy for me. I have been killed far more times by Barons, Cyberdemons and Doom Hunters by now. Thanks to TAG rarely having encounters with just one of those enemies. They almost always come in pairs, either at the same time or one after the other. And then the trash mob density in The Ancient Gods is so much more, making it a much harder bullet hell challenge.
My complaint was that marauders sometime don't stagger.. so you bring up an example where they don't stagger to... rebuttle it? I don't know what the goal is there my dude
