Agreed! Terence Hill was one of the best at being funny in westerns. "My Name is Nobody" was his best movie. I also liked the lesser known "A Genius, Two Partners and a Dupe".
Rangersly While I enjoyed both of those movies what I had a problem with, even as a teenager when they came out, what is the bed over dubbing of most of the characters. It was very obvious to me that many of the actors were speaking Italian and someone else later did the lines in English.

I totally agree, Bruce Dern was hilarious in "Support Your Local Sheriff". I especially loved the scene where James Garner sprinkled red paint on the cell floor and then arrested Dern and put him in a jail cell without any bars, Lol!
The absolutely FUNNIEST part of each movie was Jack Elam, at the end, explaining what happened to the main characters! In "Sheriff", he said about himself "And I go on to become one of the most beloved characters in western history!" In "Gunfighter" his line was "And I go on to make a big name for myself in Italian westerns!". And he DID
Blazing Saddles was and is, one of all-time favorite movies. The whole cast was fabulous and Mel Brooks was truly on his game. Thanks Rob, keep up the great work...see you at the movies.
@@mikewyant6919 : I'm guessin' Texana Simmons is in that 55-60 age range, to say that about those Don Knotts and Tim Conway movies. That's about where I fall. I didn't know it was a re-make of Paleface, until just now.
I am discovering just about everything is a remake. I think Don Knotts is far funnier than paleface. The apple dumpling gang is better in my opinion than blazing saddles. You don’t need crude humor to get a laugh.
Johnny Dominguez : I caught Hawmps at a motel stay with my grandparents on a road trip many years ago. I was attempting to describe it to my Mom, a huge Conway & Knotts fan, when I returned home and she was convinced I’d watched some PPV soft-porn rather than a Comedy-Western! Haha.
I agree George, that was a great and funny movie, especially when you consider how far apart were Stewart and Fonda in their personal and political beliefs. Yet I've heard that in real life they were great friends and able to put aside their political differences. Boy, how things have changed!
A badly underrated comedic gem. I would have included it on the list instead of Texas Across the River, which was which was cute, but hardly worth inclusion on such a list.
These ten movies were absolutely perfect choices for the funniest Western movies. The ability to laugh at satire and slapstick makes one's day. All of us need to laugh more in life and enjoy entertainment for what it is - entertainment! If we can't laugh at ourselves, something is wrong. Thank you again, Rob, for providing our Sunday escape to the best of the past from the movie industry!
George that's a GREAT pick! It has some wonderfully funny scenes with John Wayne, Stewart Granger, Fabian, and I can't remember the leading Lady's name or the comedian with the mustache who played the villian. I love reminiscing over these classic westerns, Rob does a fantastic job!
Capucine had a tragic end to her life, but left an endearing legacy in her few film appearances. I loved the way John Wayne went haywire over her. Kovacs was the perfect bad guy for such a fun film. I'll give it to Blazing Saddles though, that is the funniest western of all time. Too bad it couldn't play in the current climate of PC'ness.
Great video! Very obscure, but the Marx Brothers "Go West" is my personal favorite after Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks, however, really was revolutionary when it came to his talent at taking the fears, insecurities, prejudices, and ignorance that exist in humanity and exploiting them to comically reveal the worst of humanity! The greatest path to pave for the likes of Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Sacha Baron Cohen, The Kids in the Hall, Seth MacFarlane and their contemporaries. Again, great video! Thank you for this!
I remember the Villain very well..you are right. This movie was pretty cartoonish. I enjoyed it. Douglas was great like Wile E Coyote & Margaret was so sexy. Arnold looked awesome & clueless...and the bad guy gets the girl at the end! A fun ride.
Thank you. I have been trying to recall the name of that film for years. I saw some of it on tv many years ago and have wanted to see it in full but did not know the title. It had some stupidly funny scenes.
My favorite comedy western....the horse was smarter then anyone and handsome stranger had a six shooter seven shot. It was based on the roadrunner cartoons.
This "A Word on Westerns" episode just makes me smile. Like all lists there are always other films that could be included, but I think you nailed it Rob. The minor throw away line in Blazing Saddles " We don't need no stinking badges" has served me with the word badges being replaced with whatever since the day I first saw this movie in theaters. Jack Elam's scene stealing role in Support Your Local Sheriff, cemented him as not just a western villain, but a superbly talented actor who parts in subsequent films and TV shows were greatly expanded to make full use of his talent. Thanks for this great Sunday morning treat, to start the day, and the week. I'm already looking forward to what your cooking up for next week.
Perfect list. Here's some honorable mentions for you: "The Apple Dumpling Gang"(1975) "The Frisco Kid"(1979) "Support your local gunfighter"(1971) "Hot Lead and Cold Feet"(1978) "Maverick"(1994)
Another wonderful trip down memory lane,im 56 years old and a huge Duke fan but some how Hope and Russell sticks in my mind as the funniest. Thanks again for a wonderful video.
Honorable mentions: THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL (1965), THEY CALL ME TRINITY (1971), TRINITY IS STILL MY NAME (1972), THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST (1968), SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER (1971), EVIL ROY SLADE (1972), and THE VILLAIN (1979).
There are some great comedy westerns and your choices are great, I always loved Cactus Jack with Kirk Douglas, the horse was the star in this one too. It was the Road Runner version of a western
That film was called "The Villian" and you're absolutely right. It is the live action version of the "Road Runner" cartoons. 2nd funniest western next to "Blazing Saddles". Two of the funniest films ever.🤣🤣🤣
Cheyenne Social Club should have been here or close by. As a youngster, several of these and their sequels were my favorites - Son of Paleface and Support Youur Local Gunfighter. Unfortunately, there are several on your list I've never seen. I've watched McClintock and Blazing Saddles over and over laughing each time.
I love watching your interviews! As I told you in Williamsburg last year, I am so grateful that you have been able to save so much western film history for us!
One you may not know of is my favorite. "Evil Roy Slade" with John Astin, Pamela Austin, Dick Shawn, Henry Gibson, Edie Adams, Milton Berle.and Mickey Rooney. Look for very early appearances by Pat Morita and Penny Marshall as a bank teller.
I know this is movie westerns, however "Evil Roy Slade" is very very funny tv movie western spoof. John Aston as Roy, Mickey Rooney as the evil railroad baron, and Dick Shawn as the singing cowboy. It's a laugh riot.
FANtanstic list of western movies to look out to watch for. I hope to catch a few today. I sincerely appreciate your effort in your production of this list, they all look great. Another great video of yours, I love your wide variety of past and recent productions. Thank you.
The way things are going today, I wouldn't be surprised to see Blazing Saddles, unfortunately, banned and burned. People can't laugh anymore. Great list. Wouldn't change a thing.
Yup. Pack-rat, here, has the VHS extended cut. The one I think would be triggering would be "McClintock!" The Duke spanked Maureen O'Hare. Some VERY chauvinist scenes. In other words, a classic. It's sad. Because O'Hare's character was at LEAST McClintock's equal, in every respect. Strong enough to poke fun at for being so stuck on appearances and high society. But SJWs wouldn't see it that way.
I'll have agree with your picks. Just wish they would stop cutting them up. The times don't really matter anymore and it would be nice to see the entire movie for a change. Thanks Rob. You do an amazing job putting these things together and I like the interviews too.
Great video, Rob, and so many fine choices. I would recommend Evil Roy Slade as well. The scene where he tries to walk while carrying no guns kills me every time. I saw Way Out West with Laurel and Hardy at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum back in the early 1980s while on vacation with my dad. Glad to see you included my favorite scene (where Hardy's neck gets stretched). Laurel and Hardy are the funniest comedy duo by far. They could make standing in an empty room absolutely hysterical within a few short minutes.
Please don't forget They Call Me Trinity and Trinity is Still My Name. OMG, funniest movies ever. I think Terence Hill is still kicking. You should get him in for an interview. Thanks!
I usually disagree with most "Top Ten" movie picks, but this guy hit all the greats. The only change I'd make is "Texas Across The River" for "The Frisco Kid".
Agreed. I would put Evil Roy Slade in the list at No. 4 or 5. I love "McClintock," but it doesn't deserve to be on this list at all. I thought "The Over The Hill Gang" was better than some on this list.
Thanks, Rich. There are many more comedy westerns than most people realize. I'm going to compile all of the additional suggested titles and probably put together a Top 20 list next year. Could be some more surprises!
My late Dad laughed like anything at Dirty Dingus McGee We loved that movie Frank kept starring at that derby and sure enough look what happened!😳😁!George is really into comedy here so is Everyone!Rob maybe you can get an interview from Nancy Jr I am younger than her so she should remember how funny her Dad was in that movie Good Luck and bet you will get one or more hopefully!
A Word on Westerns Thank You for the Best Comedy Westerns I’m Glad you Enjoyed them and still do I wish I had some of those movies I have only my memories of seeing them at the drive in as a kid I wish I could buy Dean’s movies and so many of them on dvd 📀 I’m 67 now and hubby’s never seen these movies he is 103 June 26th We stay in as much as we can and relatives get our.food so we watch lots of movies and tv
Some you left out: They Call Me Trinity, Trinity Is Still My Name, and My Name Is Nobody, all with Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer. These STILL crack me up! Also, Support Your Local Gunfighter, the sequel to Support Your Local Sheriff. These all belong here.
Heya Rob, Love the channel never miss an episode.Comedic westerns were always classic shows on saturdays in our local theatre. One of my favorite that I believe to be in the top 5 is The Shakiest Gun In The West with the great Don Knotts.Sure do wish they would bring out a few more oaters soon . Thanks Rob Keep'em comin' Groover :) (Rob;)
I would like to add an 11th film...."Along Came Jones"...with Gary Cooper, William Demarest and Loretta Young.(1945) in which Cooper is mistaken for an outlaw played by Dan Duryea. I think it is pretty funny.
What a great list! No one can argue with your #1 choice of "Blazing Saddles", but my personal favorite is "McClintock". I never noticed the "no hat/ hat" in the blank firing scene until you pointed it out, what a great catch. Also, I actually like "Destry", with Audie Murphy, more than the original, "Destry Rides Again", with Jimmy Stewart, but it's always amazed me that the part of Destry in both movies was played by 2 REAL WWII HEROES! Thanks again, your channel has become my favorite!
Great list! Blazing Saddles HAD to be #1! But I do miss The Villian and The Shakiest Gun In The West which was a remake of Paleface but funnier, in my opinion.
Uhh...The Villain? With a young Schwarzenegger and Kirk Douglas as a live acton Wile E. Coyote? Respectfully disagree. I remember that movie as laugh repellent.
Frankie Lane, believed the film was a straight Western, and put his all into the title song.Mel Brookes didn't tell him until later in order to get a 'straight' performance, thus adding another layer of irony to a great spoof.
Cactus jack Slade, They call me trinity, A million ways to dye, and 1 of my favorites was a HBO special staring Louis Gosset jr in El Diablo. If you have never seen it find it and watch it. A line in the movie which happens 3 times is "Billy Rey done shot his horse"
The Pale Face was one of the funniest comedies ever made regardless of genre. I thought it was way funnier than any Road picture he made. I have two copies of the original sheet music to Buttons and Bows with both of them on the cover. There was not a doubt in my mind what #1 would be....at least in my book. Again one of the funniest comedies of all time regardless of genre.
I can't remember how many of these I saw in the army cinema in Germany during my servive there (72-77) enjoyed everyone but PC was unheard of back then and life was more real and so were people.
Well, in MHO ~ no.1 should be "Paint Your Wagon" with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin ! Nearly made me fall out of my chair with laughter !!! "City Slicker" with Jack Palance and Billy Crystal should have been there also .
I looked through over 800 comments and I saw no mention of Abbott and Costello's Ride 'em Cowboy and Martin and Lewis' Pardners? C'mon, these were pure comedies and feature two of the greatest comedy teams at their peaks. Maybe time has passed them by but check them out if you want old-school comedies like the Laurel and Hardy and Bob Hope films.
Yes! I had to go searching through the comments to see if somebody would mention this. Donald Pleasence as the oracle was the funniest thing I'v ever seen.
Destry Rides Again is a great film and you can clearly see how Madeline Khan studied Dietrich’s role for her part in Blazing Saddles. The fight scenes are hilarious.
Jack Elam's role in Night of the Grizzly was also for laughs. Son of Paleface with Bob Hope was also very funny. Martin and Lewis' Pardners is enjoyable. Elvis' Tickle Me is fun, a modern day western. And, it cannot be counted because its a television show, but the Gunsmoke episode where Festus' cousin wanted to shoot off his ear lobe, was western comedy at it's finest. Ken Curtis, Burt Reynolds and James Hampton were hilarious.Burt, Clint Walker and Angie Dickinson also made a heist comedy which I cant recall the name. Clint Walker made another called the Great Bank Robbery which was very entertaining.
@@AWordonWesterns And I know it's not a comedy, but another great film that is overlooked is "Silverado" with Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn and others that make this a great film..
Although it's generally regarded as one of their lesser films, I've always enjoyed the Marx Brothers in _Go West_ (1940). Likewise, despite its political incorrectness (i.e. blackface), there is the early Technicolor film _Whoopee!_ (1930) starring Eddie Cantor.
That was a great list - I've never seen "Rustlers' Rhapsody". I might have to revisit "Three Amigos" because I remember it as just stupid. "Support You Local Sheriff" is to me one of the funniest films. I took my grandmother to see "Blazing Saddles". She probably hadn't seen a film since "Gone With the Wind". Her comment in the end was, "Boy! Movies have changed."
Paint Your Wagon may have been the Meatball on Clint Eastwoods plate of spaghetti westerns but it was still a great comedy / western / musical for it's time.
The only comedy in the Nobody/ Trinity series is that some folks truly enjoy them! J/k, I don’t have to like what you like and vice-versa. That’s the beauty-

Maverick, with Mel Gibson, Jodi Foster, James Garner, James Coburn, and others.
No love for "Paint Your Wagon"? That was one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies.
How could you leave out Evil Roy Slade with John Astin? Beat your entire top 10 in my opinion
Agreed. I would put Evil Roy Slade in the list at No. 4 or 5. I love "McClintock," but it doesn't deserve to be on this list at all. I thought "The Over The Hill Gang" was better than some on this list.
ERS was a television movie on NBC so that's why it didn't make the list. Heck most people never heard of it.
Loved that movie!!! Nothing like seeing Gomez Addams as a silly, evil villain.
You are a genius, Rob.
Ha! Thanks, Lewis
Fabulous collection! All my favorites, plus a few I wasn't aware of - have to see them! Keep on keepin' on, Mr. Word. You do really good work!
Thanks, Elizabeth
Thanks for this list! There were a few I had never heard of, and now I want to see Rustler's Rhapsody!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@AWordonWesterns if I can find it.
A couple other good ones are: Dirty Dingus McGee, Support Your Local Gunfighter, and Four From Texas (which had a cameo from The 3 Stooges).
Toini Moore A very happy birthday to your husband. WOW 🤩 I hope you’ve been able to find a basket full of Dean Martin movies for him.
The Villan
With Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kirk Douglas and the beautiful Ann Margret.
Just sayin...
It's called Cactus Jack not The Villain. I have it on DVD. It's road runner and wile e coyote in real life.
@@alexhamilton4084 When I saw it in the theater it was called The Villain.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0080097/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
@@alexhamilton4084 Depends on which country you are referring to.
Thanks, Groover.
I would like to add an 11th film...."Along Came Jones"...with Gary Cooper, William Demarest and Loretta Young.(1945) in which Cooper is mistaken for an outlaw played by Dan Duryea. I think it is pretty funny.
Good choice Anne!
I just watched it and enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comments. It’s really a fun movie. Gary Cooper produced it even spoofs his own image.
I really like "Along Came Jones" it had a lot of comic moments, but was a good western too...
And Along Came Jones provided the inspiration for the Coasters song, a relic of the days when TV schedules were loaded with Western series.
Thanks, Terry, glad you’re enjoying our show.
With the exception of Hanoi Jane's Movie, I agree will all of your choices. Great Job
Thanks!
Thanks, Bill!
The Marx Brothers "Go West" and the Three Stooges "The Outlaws is Coming" are both very funny westerns.
I loved "The Marx Brothers "Go West"!
Yes, of course, the Marx Brothers, Go West. SONFUNNY.
Frankie Lane, believed the film was a straight Western, and put his all into the title song.Mel Brookes didn't tell him until later in order to get a 'straight' performance, thus adding another layer of irony to a great spoof.
Loved Son of Paleface, the sequel...loved Joey Bishop..
I was halfway expecting to see "The Villain" on this list.
Don't forget the follow-up movie, Son of Paleface, also starring Bob and Jane.
@@cherylrichards8951 I liked the sequel even more but the total votes put PALEFACE in the Top 10.
I can't remember how many of these I saw in the army cinema in Germany during my servive there (72-77) enjoyed everyone but PC was unheard of back then and life was more real and so were people.
TH for your service
@@karenlee188 Thank you for your support.
Well, in MHO ~ no.1 should be "Paint Your Wagon" with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin ! Nearly made me fall out of my chair with laughter !!! "City Slicker" with Jack Palance and Billy Crystal should have been there also .
You missed my favorite - My Name is Nobody with one of Henry Fonda's last perfomances, along with Terrence Hill in the Trinity films.
Absolutely! It was Henry Fonda's last western. What a great send off movie for him.
Three more to add to the list are "Skin Games","Support Your Local Gunfighter", and " The Outlaws Is Coming"
Blazing Saddles couldn't be made today! And that's a shame!
Incorrect.
@@tvtitlechampion3238 incorrect that it couldn't be made or that it is a shame?
I looked through over 800 comments and I saw no mention of Abbott and Costello's Ride 'em Cowboy and Martin and Lewis' Pardners? C'mon, these were pure comedies and feature two of the greatest comedy teams at their peaks. Maybe time has passed them by but check them out if you want old-school comedies like the Laurel and Hardy and Bob Hope films.
Honorable mention " the Cheyenne Social Club" Jimmy Stewart inherits a brothel. With Henry Fonda.
Directed by Gene Kelly.
You don't care who you step on, do you Harley.
@@christhompson9486 lol, you have no ♥️ John!
The Hallelujah Trail? Epic comedy meet the wild west!
Ya beat me to it! Upvote.
I liked Ruggles of Red Gap.
I still laugh when I see Blazing Saddles, my dad is 96 years old and he loves Blazing Saddles
*Fancy Pants* with Lucille Ball and Bob Hope is one of my favorite western comedies.
Great pick and Roll Tide!
This is a wonderful list. I can't disagree with the comedy selections. They all deserve to be on this list.
Somewhat sad that "Paint Your Wagon" didn't make the cut. Other than that, a top notch list.
Wow! Saw it twice, cannot agree. Happy it has a fan, though.
One of my favorites was not a silly comedy, but it was funny. That was Goin' South with Jack Nicholson.
I liked it, too, Tea. Thanks
I enjoyed from noon til three with Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland
Good stuff, more a satire than comedy, I think.
Excellent! Thank you Robert Word, and stay safe!
Paint You're Wagon, Should have been in the top 10
@Kim Smith he was not bad
Paint your Wagon should be on this list.
Thank you for including "Rustler's Rhapsody"...Absolutely brilliant film and highly underrated and mostly overlooked. Again, much appreciated.
Couldn't agree more!
@@AWordonWesterns And I know it's not a comedy, but another great film that is overlooked is "Silverado" with Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn and others that make this a great film..
While not technically a western I'd still like to nominate City slickers.
Your votes being counted, doc.
Glad to see Rustler's Rhapsody included.I thought it was brilliant!
Here I am, binge watching Word, and cradling my Red Rider Carbine. 👍👍👍😅😂🤣
Enjoy! Be careful, OD.
@@AWordonWesterns Aww, cain't find no ammo fer it anyway. :O 😅😂🤣
The Trinity movies; Terrance Hill and Bud Spencer.
The left and right hand of the devil
That was a great list - I've never seen "Rustlers' Rhapsody". I might have to revisit "Three Amigos" because I remember it as just stupid. "Support You Local Sheriff" is to me one of the funniest films. I took my grandmother to see "Blazing Saddles". She probably hadn't seen a film since "Gone With the Wind". Her comment in the end was, "Boy! Movies have changed."
Hey man, Little Big Man should be on here at least honorable mention. Though a serious movie it had a lot of comedy in it. Great movie!!
Paint Your Wagon may have been the Meatball on Clint Eastwoods plate of spaghetti westerns but it was still a great comedy / western / musical for it's time.
Thanks, jason. It's certainly a funny film. Perhaps we need to do a part 2 of this survey. It's in my Top 25 of Comedy Westerns.
Where's "My Name is Nobody"?
Although it was light hearted, it wasn't strictly a comedy western.
I didn't view it is a comedy despite some comedy elements.
Gig Young was suppose to be in Blazing Saddles as well.
The only comedy in the Nobody/ Trinity series is that some folks truly enjoy them! J/k, I don’t have to like what you like and vice-versa. That’s the beauty-
@@timharper3390 No, you don't have to like what I like, but I'm trying to add some culture to you life and give you some wisdom so you won't be an idiot all of your life.
Support your Local Sheriff and McClintock are my favourites on this list 😂
The Frisco Kid with Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder could have been on the list too
GREAT LIST!
Put Blazing Saddles in a theater now and the liberals would have a melt down.
So better yet - show it in all theaters.
Evil Roy Slade with Jon Astin. Up there with Blazing Saddles.
God! I love that film - probably didn't make it because it was a TV movie. The Over the Hill Gang TV movies were great too.
Over 50 titles got votes, including those.
Thanks!! A great Father's Day gift!!
There are enough that didn't make the list to do a second countdown: "Cheyenne Social Club", "Waterhole No. 3", "The Frisco Kid", "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox", "Shanghai Noon", and absolutely "The Hallelujah Trail".
Am thinking about it, dad. I'm keeping track of the titles viewers are sending in for a possible Top 20 next year. That should be some list!
Around the World In 80 Days. Both the old w/ Davis Niven and Cantiflas, and the newer with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan.
Your list is excellent...............as is your video...........thank you for sharing with us............avid fan
He forgot one of my favorite comedy westerns The Shakeist Gun In The West . Starring Don Knotts
Shakiest was just a remake of Paleface
Shout to Shanghai Noon, My Name is Nobody, Trinity series, Maverick (1994) and Goin' South
Good flicks, but three amigos, too much cheese for me, I like all 3 actors life work but this movie was just too silly to sit through.
First top 10 list I've ever agreed with - Well done !
