- A little look at an RPI engine build through the various stages of building and testing. This engine is a 4.6 with stage 1 heads, a Piper 270 and our recommended carb and ignition set up. After first start and testing on our bench, it's now on the way to a customer in the Falkland islands to be fitted to a Range Rover Classic.
"....Rover V8 to go in an E-Type Jag..."
That'll have the rivet counters apoplectic with rage! Good work! ;-)
It will certainly save a ton of weight, over the original huge cast-iron lump...
Nice to see more quality engines being built Ian. Looking at the wall, there seems to be a shed load of build sheets hanging up. Many more since you built and fitted a 3.9 stage1 to my TR8 Hope you got some work off the back of it. Keep up the great work.
Hi Terry good to hear from you.
Yes certainly being kept busy by all things Rover V8. Yes the video series on your TR8 was certainly a hit and often gets brought up by people calling in for anything from advice to engines.
I’m putting a 4.6 in a p6 and putted distributor and carbs. So long nose cam, and p6 timing cover. what is needed for the crank and pulley ?
Looking good guys as per usual (from Arnies Dad) 😉
What kind of paint do you use on sump, pulleys, brackets etc?
Black shiny paint lol :-) - Sorry couldnt resist. Its a high gloss tough black made by simoniz. However the key with all paint is preperation and a good etch primer.
Beautiful work as usual. Question about the sump mod for the 4.6 crank throw - what sort of clearance does this need to provide? I have an unmodified SD1 sump on my 4.6, and only became aware of this as a potential issue recently, after I'd finished the build. It turns freely by hand and doesn't "feel" like there's any interference between crank and sump, but am anticipating I could be in for some trouble when I actually run it up. I have already doubled up on sump gaskets, is that likely to have created enough clearance alone?
Hi Will,
Doubling up on sump gaskets may well have given you the clearance you need. We dress the sump to provide the clearance.
R/E. The red 215cu V8 looks smashing ! My re-built 3.5 V8 Range Rover Classic has covered just over 100K miles in the past decade and flapper is working fine. Any suggestions with RPi Engineering experience to achieve 201Hp/150kW from this engine here Downunder ? V.
Hi, Best to email us on info@v8engines.com to discuss your setup etc however keep in mind unless you are driving at 4500 to 5500 rpm where peak bhp is the reality is that you are driving on torque in the mid rev range.
Where are you at are you an the usa
dear sirs, where may i find a stroker crankshaft kit (not a buick 300 crankshaft modded to work in a rover v8!)for a rover 4.0 v8 engine??
More vids please!
Humm… only real mistake is replacing the silent chain cam drive with a roller chain. Silent chains are far more durable, rugged, lower friction, and accurate in timing than the roller chain. And, particularly for a performance application decrease the shock loads of vibrations transferred to the cam drive and are stronger in general. Now if you have increased the resistance of driving the cam by increasing friction of the lifters on the cam by increased valve spring pressure, cam profile or rocker ratio generated acceleration loads resulting in turning friction … exactly what have you gained with a roller chain over a heavier duty silent chain? And, remember shock loads increase by vibration, speed, and shocks such as firing pulse intensity. Of course we often are not thinking engineering in hot rodding an engine, rather how much money can be wasted, and spending too much time on pornography… in the context of James Joyce’s definition “anything that creates desire without fulfillment.” Gears forget them they may not improve things either.
