    To me, this year is what I'd call a "tryout year" for Treliving and the Leafs. He was brought on late, too late to make any major changes to the roster, and brought on BECAUSE they didn't want major changes. So he stuck with the core, brought on his own pieces for what he'd like the team to look like in the future, and gave them this year to audition for the future of the Leafs. A lot of his moves paid off, some of them didn't. I don't think the Leafs were ever gonna be cup contenders this year, but another first round exit definitely puts into perspective where priorities need to lie in the future.
    I agree with what you guys said: this off season is REALLY what will define him moving forward. If he can find those crucial pieces and make those tough decisions, he just might be what's able to finally put this team over the hump they've been stuck on for nearly a decade.

    Honestly also Treliving had a rough end in Calgary but it wasnt really his fault, he lost 2 50 goal scorers the same offseason, Gaudreau he had no chance of keeping because his family wanted to leave (I still think he would of stayed otherwise), and Tkachuk I will blame him more since he has said he wanted to stay but they didnt work it out but also in theory the trade wasnt bad at the time, it sucked to lose him but they got a 70 point player and a good defenseman but hindsight the trade was insanely one sided (Huberdeaus decline has been shocking to everyone) but I dont think its his fault it turned out that way, if anything the extension before the season is the part that he is most to blame for, he also got Kadri that same offseason which has been a top player on the team since.
    He also has always been solid at making a D core and getting competent Tending... even tho yaknow Markstrom in that last year became a sieve after having an amazing year but thats not his fault. I think he can build a playoff team consistently on paper, but a contending team i dont know about

    As a leafs-liker (i am a fan of another team but i root for them) on a less emotional level, i feel like treliving did really well in roster construction in what was given to him in such a short time. Klingberg was the only bad signing, and that was a high risk/high reward signing anyway. The depth was the best the leafs had in years, he couldn‘t move the core guys because he got there too late last year and he just didn‘t have enough cap space to spend for the BIG holes on the top defensive pairing and goalie situation left. If he could have moved marner he could have signed a 6mio goalie and use the rest plus klingbergs money for defense. That‘s like 8-9mio

    This is coming from a GM mode Nerd. You really need three goalies. And when I say that I mean minimum what you want is a franchise guy a high-level backup + a young goalie that can turn into a backup if you need them. Exactly like what Vancouver did. We had demco true Elite starter, we had silovs a backup that was young that will probably turn into a legitimate starter and we picked up Casey deSmith who's a very good backup. Especially considering you can get backup goalies that are okay-ish for League minimum. There's no reason not to have wall as a 1B, pickup a 1A and pick up two league min goalies who can play at the NHL level if needed. There's always a few goalies you can get for basically nothing. Even if you have to trade like a six or a seventh round pick, I'd much rather have a goalie than a pic. And even if they can't get rid of Tavares if they can trade Marner for something like a Thomas Chabot they could use that last little bit of extra cap to resign guys like Domi and bertuzzi

    The problem I have with comparing a GM's performance from one team to another is much like comparing palyers on one team to another.. it's not black and white... a GM, just like players, will largely succeed or fail depending on support.. owners, shareholders, etc have a large say in what gets done.. I am sure Treliving ( like most GM's in the league) would love to get X player or have certain coaches, etc on the team but if the higher ups say no, then you're hands are tied. Look at Pelley.. previous years they were so comfortable running this same core back again and again and again. Now Pelley comes in and says absolutely not.. we're not here to sell jerseys... Shanny and Dubas consistently said " we can win with this group and we will win with this group"... well, nothing's happened... I trust Tre for now.. until he proves he can't be trusted. I get frustrated hearing all these rumours and armchair GM's saying what this team needs and who we should get.. listen, it's nowhere near that easy. You think these GM's don't know what kind of players they need? What is needed to win?? Of course they do.. but there are many obstacles like salary cap, player protection, NMC's, etc... I really liked hearing that virtually nobody is safe.. I know they commited to Matthews and Nylander but hearing that some of, a lot of the players, will be walked to free agency is refreshing. Hearing that possibly 3 out of 5 core players are very likely to be gone.. maybe not this year, but they won't be re-signed. That's refreshing.. Seeing Shanny in the media availability was refreshing simply due to the look like he was on an extremely short leash and has very limited time to turn this around. For me, I trust Treliving until I feel he can't be trusted. What will that take? Not recognizing the need to change and making the necessary changes.

    Treliving will need time to put his stamp on this team as it's filled with Kyle Dufas🤓mistakes.
    Treliving hands were tied in Calgary as Tkachuk wanted out so he did what he could nobody thought Huberdeau would turn out to be a tire fire. 🔥
    Another major issue with the Leafs organization is the pro scouting department has seriously let them down in combination with the Leafs constantly trading away all the #1 draft picks in senseless deals this is how bad Kyle Dufas left the team traded away all the #1 picks & got fleeced on every contract negotiation.
    Shanascam & Kyle Dufas set this franchise back 10 years ontop of the rest of the years the fan base has been suffering for the cup! 🏆
    I wish they would have kept Lou Lamarillo back than instead of hiring a nerd like Kyle Dufas who had zero gm experience & it now shows why you go with veteran management & coaches bc how many more years do they want to set the organization back & the fans suffering even more the Maple Laughs are exceptionally CRUEL to Leafs nation.

    I've said this before but they just need to sign a decent veteran for a year (DeSmith or Talbot) and the 2025 UFA goalie class is stacked, Shesterkin, Ullmark, Saros, hell Freddie Andersen but he's old and has health concerns. Adin Hill, Logan Thompson, Joey Daccord are decent goalies on the next tier that are also UFAs. If they can't find a goalie via trade next season, waiting could be an option.

    Not sure I agree with the assessment of Domi. I think he showed where he fits well and next year he will be a great addition. Tyler I wasn't seeing it until the playoffs of the value he brought. He was running around the ice being a menace and making plays. I think they should resign him. Reeves is not a resign at all once his contract is up, maybe even trade him away if possible to free up some money if needed. Marner is the hard question. If you convince him to trade away, then you have to replace his numbers, if he walks then you can sign from the free market maybe. Tavares you run it out and convince him to resign a friendly contract or you let him go and use the money to fill the voids. Not sure, but hard choices a head.

    Trade Tavares if you can.....for Mason MacTavish. Use the cap space to bring in Montour and resign Domi and/or Bert. Cowan, Weber and Minten on board next year. Trade Timmy Liljegren if he wants a penny more than he makes currently. Sign Brossoit long term for cheap if possible. I know you all think Marner is the issue, but in my mind you don't move 100 point playmakers, especially Hometown Boys. You make him see the light and take a discount.

    He's grown a bit, still a hot head, but at least can sorta focus that energy more efficiently on the ice. I'm a habs fan, loved that 70pt year of his, but man when the other team would get to him you were better off benching him

  • @Alexdenomme
    @Alexdenomme Месяц назад

    The teams been built backwards. Dont build around the core 4. Look at the domi bert line. Its better because it does the opposite. Instead of a line that caters to one players style, its a tough line that you can plug any elite player into. If you need a willy on the top line you put him between. If you need a sniper, then 34.
    Build versatile pairs of wingers that can be lethal in multiple ways based on elite players driving it. Instead of lines whos ability is all funneled through that one player and limited to doing what that core player does best.

    • @Alexdenomme
      @Alexdenomme Месяц назад

      Have a physical and big body line, a quick legs line, a "just shoot the puck" line etc. Then swap around your core based on where each one adds the most lethality in that game situation. Don't make a "matthews" line. Put him or willy or marner if he stays with whatever line that game calls for.

    How come no one comments on how incredibly average Morgan Reilly has been for his 7 milliion.... Lybushkin, Edmundson and for sure Benoit played as good or usually better. Reilly couldnt be more average and doesn'g earn his dollars at all. The leafs D can be scrutinized for not being defensive, I think it is a result of the game plan the coach uses (offense only). But ffs score a goal once in a while. How easy is it to defend against a team that never scores from the blue line.... and only 1 guy, maybe 2 need to be watched on the power play.

    The Hubredeau anchor hurts us but honestly, my opinion of Treliving's tenure is generally positive. I think his departure was at the right time - when the team needed a new face to figure out the next era - but what Treliving built was a modest team. Not a contender but Gaudreau is no Matthews (at least, outside of a contract year) and Tkachuk was no Tavares (he is now and we knew he would be and Tavares isn't but my point stands).
