From an outside perspective, the Shanaplan was dead last year or even 2 years ago. The fans were too close from the problem to see the entirety of it and this is the problem....The Leafs are build for the season and to be flashy, but not for the playoff and they have low compete. It's not just bad cap management, that doesn't help of course, but it's also chemistry and culture management. That being said, this series had so good positive. You now know who have some compete in the Leafs...Nylander and Knies !! And you know who got to go, Tavares and Marner !! Also most team right now work with a goalie 1A and 1B or something close to that...i'm not saying the Leafs doesn't have the potential to have that, but they need to move pieces to do it...Last thing, Keefe should have been fired after the loss versus Montréal for one simple reason, he doesn't adapt his line well in a game like most other coach in the league right now. Even Ducharme did it in that serie by building a super defensive line with Danault, Gallagher and Byron or Lekhonen to suffocate Matthews and Marner...The change will be good for Toronto !!

The major problem I see is that the ownership knows despite what type of product they put on the ice, the arena is going to sell out, so why bother worrying about whether or not the team is going to be a winner or not? A hire like Rod Brindamour is the type of coach that can change the culture of an organization and there are not many others in my opinion.

Blowing up the core does not guarantee victory or loss nor doing keeping it together. Alex Ovechkin played for a decade before he won. Until he won, people were saying he would never win. Same with Ray Bourque. Other teams keep their players. Leafs fans have to play the blame game and scape goat a player or players for a season's loss and demand that player be run out of town. Then the player "who would never win", is seen hoisting the cup with his new team proving Leafs fans wrong. I am old enough to remember that in 1994 after making it to Round 3 in back to back seasons, Leafs fans demanded change to get them to the next level. Well they got change alright and trades were made. The core was blown up. At the time I argued against blowing up the core back in 1994 despite being in the minority. I was an idiot I was told. I did not know anything. Yet history proved me right. The team got worse. 1995 they got blown out in round 1. 1996 blown out in round 1. Then missed the playoffs in 1997 and 1998. OOOPS. That did not go as planned. Do you F****King see what I am getting at. I almost hope they do trade Marner, he goes on to win the cup while the Leafs miss the playoffs and if that happens I will have my told ya so moment. AGAIN.

Why haven't the leafs made it, simple answer. You have 4 players making over 10 million a year and they don't back check it or body check. The effects are you can't get players to do that do to lack of funds. So forget about getting a goalie that can stop the puck.

Notwithstanding the Covid cap disaster, and injuries to star players in the playoffs, the only person who deserves to be fired is Shanahan. The Leafs GM and coaching was fine, and now that Shanny feels he’s forced to change the core, it’s just going to make things worse. They were an OT goal away from the second round, and were missing two of their top players in the series. The contracts are expiring in a year anyway, and they can let Tavares go, and re-sign Marner. Does anyone think the Leafs will be better without Marner? It’s absurd, and these MGMT guys are just protecting their own asses. Shanahan’s contract ends in a year, and I’m betting it won’t be renewed, regardless of outcomes this coming season.

    • @pomerlain8924

When they had signed Marner, Matthews and Tavares to their big contracts, they were expecting the cap to keep increasing. And when COVID hit, it lead to a flat cap, which strangled their cap space. Hence, they had to let a guy like Hyman walk.
But no other teams were stupid enough to even put themselves in that position by devoting all that cap space to forwards. And the Leafs front office was too inept to make changes after 2021 or 2022, when they still had all the leverage.

I get the frustration with Shanny, but firing him now would be INSANE from a business perspective. You have a new guy running MLSE, just fired your coach, and the GM has had one season to tinker. Keith Pelley has been running MSLE for what, four weeks, and you want him to dump the ONLY remaining source of stability in the entire organization?!?
Look, this isn't a reflection on Shanahan's plan. It may indeed suck. But you simply don't fire him now. Unless some law were being broken, NO ONE in this position would be fired now.

@@tomdixon1213 I was just speaking from the point of view of Pelley. He needs to absorb info about the Leafs like a sponge, and quickly. Dumping Shanahan wouldn't advance that objective. Over the summer? Start of next season? Different question, because time has passed, and I'd be more inclined to agree with you. I think the decision weighing on Pelley will be to placate fan revolt by firing Shanahan, or limit the rapid change by assessing the new coach and GM's second year.
I'm also no defender of Shanahan. I think his biggest mistake was firing Babcock for hurting Marner's feelings. I wasn't a Babcock slappie (hell, we had him in Detroit), but am rapidly becoming one. The internet has basically crucified the dude's career because "he was a meanie" and "he looked at phones". LMAO.
