Watermelon isn't really as nutritious or beneficial to koi as one might think, more than 90% of the flesh is just water. Considering watermelons contain around 20% of Vitamin C, and Oranges contain 160%, they are much better for their immune system, if you ask me. It is interesting to watch koi eat watermelon, not gonna lie :)

At first it is an accidental bite but I can assure you they strip the rind clean once they figure out they like it. Our light was failing at the end of the video so we had to quite filming when we did.
Thawed Frozen Peas is great for them and Oranges are typical. I have seen a pineapple tied off to a rope in a koi pond before. The koi were working it over pretty good. That was amazing to me!
Feeding a variety of fruit and veggies on occasion is great for the digestive tract of koi. Think about always eating a hard packed pellet. Feeding frozen peas to your koi regularly is fun and great for the koi. We have taken grossly misshapen koi from poor diets and corrected their figure using a frozen pea diet! Fun and rewarding to make those changes in a clients beloved pet!
My koi are a bit smaller, but we have watermelon all summer in Fl , I just tossed in some small pieces and they went nuts, been doing that for a few years, but I might try the “wheel “approach looks interesting. Thanks for sharing ....

This is an old comment, but you need to encourage koi to mate during their breeding season. What you can do is go buy some grass skirts or plastic things to imitate grass and just have them float on your pond and koi will lay eggs where they feel safe
I think they feed watermelon because a disk of melon looks sort of cool on the water and the fish seem to like once they're brave enough to try it. Watermelon has virtually no nutritional benefit for fish or people.

+honeyangel47 Garlic paste does improve appetite in fish but I would suggest you try a variety of prepared pelleted foods if they are available to you. Simply switching brands and mixing flavors you might find their appetite change.
Thank you so much. I have since donated my koi to a friend who has a bigger pond. I was using a container pond and had not known that such environments were very bad for the koi. So I am going to convert my container pond to accommodate two comet goldfish.
how can you get them to eat oranges? i tried to get mine to eat orange slices today and a couple took a pushed it around to see what it was but then never ate it. even though oranges are so much smaller could the same idea apply?
keep the water temp at anywhere between 76-80 degrees farenheit. these are prime feeding conditions for koi/carp and they are able to absorb alot more of what is in their food at this temp. i personally use hikari wheat germ formula sinking pellets and wardley pond pellets with added vitamin c
+David Durbon Either your fish are the same gender, or aren't old enough. Also, the water conditions of your pond/aquarium may not be ideal for the fish.

Variety is good for the koi. This is something I only offer them seasonally and of course I alway give them the seedless watermelon. Koi are omnivores so you will find them grazing on algae, eating small fish, eating eggs from spawning, aquatic plants and such. This offering of watermelon is a nice soft fruit that is easy for them to eat and digest. Life is Short, Enjoy Koi

Not a dumb question. The fruit is a good change in their diet from pelleted foods and it's fun to watch.

sanjmanj It is not uncommon for koi to go after citrus too. I have seen them eat pineapple!!!!
