I can't believe he is actually really an American Mexican and French ethnic person. I just thought "well, he must have moved from France to the U.S and studies various languages". Had he not said his ethnicity, i wouldn't have believed it. It's just such a rare ethnicity. Never heard of a person with such a wonderfully weird ethnicity.

I just discovered Loic, and I am so grateful for his humor. Loic, you are such a talented actor and comedian! As a Californian who stubbornly decided to learn French, I totally get the French language jokes. And "French", the character, is my new favorite thing to binge watch on RUclips. He's adorable, overly-enthusiastic, sensitive, and ridiculous. 😄 Absolutely perfect. Thank you for your content!

Did that happened to either of you: After a holiday in Ireland (3weeks straight English) at the airport, I was watching the News (proper French) and I could not understand the quebecois couple behind me speaking the "slang" quebec french 🤣 It took me a good 1 or 2 of active listening to realize it wasnt of foreign language but my own🤣

Translations can be funny. One of my British colleagues while on a project in Portugal, we did go to the supermarket and he asked the female Clerc if the marmalade was without Preservatives. She almost called the cops and he did feel very very British.

    • @ameliesayshola8854

Let me guess preservatives meant condoms? In French it’s the same, préservatif means condom, not preservative

@@ameliesayshola8854 yes this is what the cashier understood. He meant conservateurs

    • @quietcat
      @quietcat 2 года назад +8

I don't know if you are exaggerating for effect about the almost calling the cops, but being Portuguese him talking about "marmelada sem preservativos" (marmelade without preservatives) can have an even worst meaning than just the condom thing. Marmelada can be a slang for making out/sex. So ... she might just have heard him ask for sex without a condom.

Captain America : The Winter Soldier. George Batroc is supposed to be french, he's played by Quebec actor Georges St-Pierre, sounds VERY Quebec, and later in the movie, Robert Redford's actor says something like "for the record, he's from Algeria, look on a map."
Litteraly nothing is right. Nothing at all. As a french Marvel movies lover, it was both awkward and hilarious. Which wasn't the point of the scene at all.

He's supposed to be from france, living in america. He listens to Kaaris, Guizmo, so that's nice, but when he gets angry, all I hear is "POUTAN", that cracks me up everytime !

"In America we are still learning how to hold hands". It's so true. Any mention of intimate activities in families and friends is broadly considered "embarrassing" "dirty". Although it seems we are shifting into a more daring phase. Our American tv shows, Hollywood movies, books, ecetera, are showing more suggestive and liberally intimate content. To the point that rated PG 13 movies like spider man homecoming references (plays moaning dialogue) pornography, which let's not forget, it's a movie with very young protagonists, not even full adults yet. Other marvel movies minimally play on Gay jokes of the non offensive but rather intimate suggestive nature. So concerning embarrassment of such topics in America, nonetheless we are still becoming more open fast. There are many pockets of people that will joke about and freely talk about these topics in the U.S.

I saw a film on TV the other day in which they at one point were in Sweden. Alexander Skarsgård (Swedish actor) was playing a Canadian (!) politician and at one point someone was speaking ”Swedish” in the background. It was very, very obvious that that actor wasn't Swedish. Short version, it sounded like crap.
I guess they weren't actually in Sweden recording that scene, so maybe there were no Swedish actors around, but couldn't they at least ask Alexander for advice? Or maybe he could have played that role too. It was only a few seconds anyway.

I have a fond memory of watching an episode of Capitaine Marleau. So I'm learning French - I'm at A2 level I'm terrible at understanding French people talking fast. Even if I say that my French is not good they speak to me full speed anyway. Solution: why not watch some French TV to practice. So I'm watching something (I didn't know at that time that it's Capitaine Marleau) and I understand close to nothing. Subtitles are not word for word so I'm even more confused and all of a sudden something changes: I understand everything. Wow, a guy on the show speaks so "doucement". Well... That guy was talking to a deaf character on the show, so I came up with a great idea: instead of saying that my French is not good, I should say that I'm deaf so all French people speak slowly to me :D

The episode “Madrigal” in Breaking Bad (ref. “Chief Food Scientist”) drove me crazy and forever stopped me rating the show as highly as everyone else. You can not tell me Hollywood has no young-ish native German speakers. Suspension of disbelief shot to hell.

11:30 In Germany it's often quite disappointing. They just all talk German (quite often), which leads to some irritating scenes (i.e. a soldier in saving private translating the German soldier speaking German into German to his CO). These make a lot more sense when you watch the OV and realize that they actually took the effort of including the other language, so you actually understand what is going on. Even though quite often the spoken German makes your ears bleed....

For non native speakers it's hard to distinguish regional accents, cause they miss a huge set of reference. When I hear Sean Connery, there is nobody telling me "this is scottish" or "this is north england accent" so i recognize this as kind of his way to talk, but I cannot create a group, like "all Scots speak so and so", you have to have a bunch of them, hear them talk and find their common ground.
Also for your videos, If you hadn't told us in the video, I had no idea you are from UK. Going by heuristics first guess would always be American.
And when I'm able to localize by language, it's more by choice of words (lorry, flat, ground floor), then by accent.
Loïc hasn't revealed his nationality, a perfect bilingual english/french I would locate in Montreal.

Exactly. I can identify regional accents in Dutch (a language I've spoken for 5 years) but can't identify regional accents in French (a language I've spoken my entire life) because I learned a specific accent of Dutch in the Netherlands which serves as a reference point. I learned French in anglophone Canada so my accent is a random mix of many accents which gives me no reference point to identify the distinguishing features of an accent.

BTW Loïc said his nationality at the start of this video, he is U.S. American and French (from France).
You can tell his English accent is not Canadian because of the way he pronounces the "a" sound. His French is very very European, sounds like standard Parisian French, definitely not Canadian French (not even the Canadian French accents which sound a bit more European)

PS: Paul, I'm from the Pacific/Australia and Americans don't know what we sound like... I get confused with South Africans as well but I guess that I really sound Australian since they usually get it right.

Loic, why not do it in 2 or 3 parts then? I LOVE your improv. Or cut out the script and keep the improv (script as just brainstorm).
LOVE your longer/sitcom etc ideas but I’m still fine with the boring format too. I’m far from bored yet.

I am bilingual, I speak Polish (my native language) and English. What makes me cringe is when in films foreigners speak English or Polish with their native accent. I rather they would speak their own language and there would be subtitles. Some accents are so strong/distinctive that the English/Polish language sounds nearly grotesque.

    • @holger_p
      @holger_p Год назад

Depends on if it's intended to be understood. Sometimes the story just goes like "two persons secretly talk in background in their native language" and the english person in the room, or the audience, is not intended to know what this is about; or it is subtitled.
Today this happens less often cause, they know a movie will be worldwide distributed, so they are more careful when casting.
On the other Hand, an Indian English has to sound like Indian English, although it maybe considered as grotesque. But that's reflecting reality.

It’s really an interesting comment that you made about actors that are supposed to be French, Spanish … but who aren’t for real, it sounds good for people who doesn’t speak the language but when you do 😤 for exemple I am currently in Spain and I went to the cinema to watch Death on the Nile, the main actor who is supposed to be French is playing a scene with other French actors (for real) in the WWI battlefield and he sounds so off because French isn’t his mother tongue but at least they kept this scene with subtitles. The worst part was that this character is supposed to have a French accent while speaking in Spanish but the dubbing wasn’t done with someone who ACTUALLY SPEAKS FRENCH EITHER and the dubbing was off too ! You know what sounds are hard to make in another language like the “r” and “j” sounds in Spanish but the dubbing sounded like someone who was making fun of the french accent… it was bad, really bad… I don’t know what they’ve done for the French version of the movie, they probably dubbed everything from the beginning to hide the horrible truth 🤣🙈

i think that Loîc has hudge potential to become big if he decides to give a long format content a try. why? Ryan George and Pitch Meeting. he created the pitch meeting's series that blew up for making fun of the silly plotholes and inconsistencies in movies and , what it was just a bit, has its own chanel now. Loîc would push a little more and expand in the characters he created and trust the audience. i really expect big things for him!!!

et je viens de tilter que j'aurais pu écrire ce commentaire en français..................... 😅

Going for new followers is a good approach on any timeless content, like Loics. If you win a new follower, he will get caught be one video, but watch also all the others, older ones. There is no special order, no newer or older. Each video just has to work a a door opener. And if you want to get hired one day, it's not just like you have a "demo", look 'that's how I'm acting", no you bring in all your followers. If you have a million fans, a movie with Loic will probably have a million viewers, it's a bank at the box office. Pure capital.

Actually when it comes to dubbing now the industry tends to hide the jokes on the different accents because we know that the series is taking place in the USA so they speak English and they would make fun of other people like the British accent or French accent but it’s ok because we know it’s dubbed. Back in the 80’s-90’s they were totally changing the language to make fun of it like Joey speaking French? Now he is learning Spanish! The French teacher in “The Nanny”? He is Italian now!
I know we lose many jokes and things in translation but it has to be smooth in the end, it’s like a contrat you sign up when you watch a movie that is dubbed but it’s ok, I personally prefer a good dubbing with logic even if we lose informations than a dubbing trying to keep everything but that ends weird
