This is a refreshing take with data backing up your arguments, but I find dating apps work if you're a Japanese looking to date another Japanese. I'm a foreigner myself and had been using the apps for quite some time now, and I would argue the apps are skinner boxes aimed at men.
Sadly dating in general is a skinny boxes for men weather on dating apps or not. But a lot of international couples in Japan definitely use online dating tools. So I strongly believe this is the way to maximize your chances.

Many of us Americans stubbornly continue to try to live in the real world and meet people in the real world. I’m a single man, and my fantasy is to meet my wife in a chance encounter in a supermarket. My dad met my mom when she was buying a newspaper. He happened to walk by at the time, thought she was pretty, and stopped to talk to her. I still have an instinct in me that makes me feel men should meet women in this way.
It was an easier and more peaceful period for sure, but it has passed. And longing for it causes you nothing but pain. Look to the future and implement the things you mentioned in your comment into the real life situation.
Your father's generation had no other options. He didn't have a marriage match maker, or the internet at that time. So the guys had to grow some balls and take a chance on talking to a woman in person to get her (house) phone number. And unlike dating apps, he usually didn't know if the woman was available or has a boyfriend/husband already. Your gen can still do it now, but don't have the balls nor the desire to learn the communication skill of approach and small talk. Once I learned it, my body count shot up to triple digits.

Chance encounters as encouraged by many are a waste and highly useless, women have work,busy with errands, want to be alone strolling, waiting on friends or just minding their own business. The idea of just interrupting someone is not a good idea, with a dating app the intentions are clear and it's direct. If a chance encounter finds it way then that is good but it should not be used as a means to ignore dating apps.Back in the days it was arranged marriages, a priest to get someone from a church times have changed or a friend would introduce you through a friends but Dating apps are a Godsent for those who thinks of the future! .

I’m sad that COVID changed the social situation in Japan. I had so much better luck before COVID, both online and in person. I’ve found that because there are so many people using dating apps now that it’s too concentrated. Definitely think Japanese apps are better than bumble or tinder. I have very few matches on those two. I’ve found that with women, they tend to get hella matches, which seems great at first, but they have so many that they have trouble going through all the messages, especially when many of them are boring or uninspired conversations from men. On the other hand, unless men are in the top percent - very good looking, we don’t get as many matches anymore.
Dating from distant countries is difficult, it would be nice to have a dating site where we can meet for work or business. I'm planning to buy a dating advice, but at 47 it might be unnecessary 😅

So many sources on google. Most the apps you need to speak japanese and have a japanese id to use the apps as most wont accept passports. Tinder require a verification as well. Apps i used are bumble which has been more successful for me. Hinge is a hit or miss. And cupidjapan works but mostly older women over 40
