Those hooks are great! I have been looking at the seller's site and I am contemplating ordering them. Now, about the light. Yes, it is a bigger project than you usually do, but it looks like it has great potential. I think you should complete it!
I would love to see you "take that lamp over the top", it is a lot of work, but that is a beautiful piece of work, and with good wiring, and shiny finish, I'm sure it will be a beautiful lamp.
Do the lamp, for sure. "First Class Amateur" I've been following him for a while now. He is also a vereran of war! He does mostly knots and how to use them in daily life. I've learned a lot and very useful info. A great channel. I have been intending on purchasing a grappling hook from him and I will purchase it only from him. Shame on China. Thanks for this session and Brents' good work.
Keep going and finish the lamp John!!! You can retrofit the lamps with LED’s and modernize it while retaining the classic style. Can’t wait to see it finished!!! Great start!! The Old Army Scout…
I know that the lamp would be a lot of work but it is such a great learning opportunity. Not just on the "how to" parts but also to see your thought processes on how you decide to tackle the different aspects of the project... Thanks so much for sharing all of your vast knowledge with us...
Rather coincidental I was looking at a grappling hook online about 2 minutes before I watched this video..............Looking forward to seeing the finished lamp, don't be stingy with your artistic expression, let's see some color on those flowers, leaves and such.
What neighbor couldn't get along with you John? He must be a first class pr$ck! They should be thankful to have a neighbor like you. You are doing great on the light fixture and I definitely want to see you finish it! Looking good my friend! 👍🇺🇲
From what you have done so far I really think it would be a good idea to finish it. The initial cleaning shows that it would polish up nicely and with new sockets you could return it to what it use to look like. The grappling hooks were very neat and they look well worth the money to buy them from the original maker. Thanks for sharing this.
I picked up the same folding grappling hook at the local church rummage sale for 5 bucks. Lucky I was there early. As for the lamp, being a part-time antique dealer on the side for about 30 years, I would first say that it is worth saving just for the history. Most of those cast lamps were cast away (unfortunate pun). I suspect it was painted, and highlighted in different areas. In our market out here, it would go for at least $700. Pretty rare. Wayne out West (Colorado)
would love to see the lamp completed. as a volunteer at our local Restore i am taking apart ceiling fans and lamps of all types just about every day i'm in there. i didn't see any, but the most common nut size to go on that small pipe is 14mm to fit the pipe thread.
Go for it, John. You can purchase wire that looks vintage but has much safer insulation, and if you use vintage looking LED bulbs, it should look awesome! Keep up the good work , buddy!😃👌
Great video, ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 The grappling hooks were quite interesting. As a kid I was under the impression that both grappling hooks and quicksand would be much more prominent in adult life than they ended up being. 🤣 I think the lamp looks great so far and would love to see you finish it. I know it’s a lot of work but there’s one hell of a lamp hiding under that surface rust and tarnish!
Of course I would love to see that light fitting fully restored. Your work is outstanding. The piece you have cleaned up already looks amazing. Personally I would watch you mow your lawn as I enjoy your videos that much. Loved the grappling hooks. I will resist in purchasing one of those as I got in enough trouble buying a Zippo lighter a few years back when you spoke about them. The wife couldn’t understand why I would need a lighter when I don’t smoke.
Scoutcrafter, if a scout started a project & didn't want to finish it. What would you tell him. Yeah.. . . This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime things that come along that you don't wanna turn down. It would fit your house decor exceptionally well. Take it over the top pal. You'll be glad you did. Yeah, buddy!❤😊
Honestly, I do not care what you do... It is Awesome! Thank you sir for your hard works and for sharing it with us.

Thanks John, another great show, I love that grappling hook and the gravity hook works really very well, could get you out of a sticky situation ! That lamp is a strange design but the parts you've cleaned have come up really well, it'd be a shame not to finish it now - all that shiny metal you could put smart colour change bulbs in it and it would reflect beautifully !
The hook was really cool, ScoutCrafter ....but, come on man!!! Do you really want to believe that your not going to finish the lamp??? That thing is awesome...spray it with some clear and let it shine!!! 👍😎🙏
If in your travels you pass a large Ace Hardware, check if it has a lamp parts section. My local one has all the sockets and IPS fittings in drawers, you just pick out what you need and drop them in a pre-printed bag they supply. They trust you to write the prices on the bag. I have ordered parts like that online and gotten the wrong things (plus having to pay shipping).
That lamp could be finished in many ways. I've seen a few diecast lamps left in silver and the filigrees done in various colours. I did a similar die cast aluminum lamp for my Victorian home in a faux verdi gris finish just using gold and green spray paint. I rewired it but re-used the small ceramic wire nuts to connect the five lamps.
Hi John, Very nice gravity hook. Too cool. It looks like it worked much better than that Playland crane. Great lamp. Very nice description of issues and what to look for. Of course you need to do it up to completion. Once you tease us with that side piece, you need to do the rest. Nice new flag. Best Regards, John
Rebuild the ceiling light. As to the grappling hook, that would be handy everywhere including the kitchen. Stuff gets dropped between or behind things like the stove or refridgerator. Same principle used in logging tongs. They make big and small ones. Pulling tightens the tongs.
I've got to be honest. You are a better man than me. That lamp is not something that I would have undertaken. But, you've gone this far so I think you should finish it. It will probably come out great. Also, that gravity hook is a fantastic little design. Love to see that kind of ingenuity.
Mr. Scout Crafter, I'm reminded of a quote, “Once a task has just begun, never leave it till it's done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.”~ Quincy Jones That grappling hook is pretty sharp.
John my dad always told me when you start a project you have to finish it. You know deep down you have to finish the lamp. You have the talent and the tools, let's see it shine on Friday 😉.
Cool hooks, would be nicer though if there was a way to attach the removable section to the body of the unit so the entire thing is flat for storage and you could turn it into a grapple when needed.
The convertible grappling hooks are way cool! The only suggestion I'd make, is the removable piece could have a hole drilled in it , that would allow the piece to be held by the removeable pin , so the whole tool could be stored flat when not in use.
That's going to look excellent. You are definitely the man to do it. They don't make them like they used to eh? Such a solid item! None of this throwaway stuff we produce by the millions today only for it to be in a landfill tomorrow. This lamp deserves your patience and expertise.
Of course you have to finish the lamp. Some will find a wealth of knowledge in your process. Some won't be interested. Everyone will enjoy seeing a master at work. Until Friday, enjoy the rest of the week. Jim
Now you gotta go find some to catch lol. Nice tools... support the inventor! I wouldn't have patience to do that Lamp, so respect to you sir if you do it... would be a nice gift to somebody maybe.
You are off to a good start with the lamp, Scout. As you say, it looks to be a lot of work. Continue at a pace you are comfortable with. Don't commit to the internet that you will have it done by a certain date just in case it doesn't work out or you need to walk away for a while. We'll be just as appreciative in one week or 10 weeks. The grappling hooks are cool. They do look like something that would be on Batman's utility belt. Great show as usual. Many thanks. 😃👍
Liked information on the valve! The grappling hook / gravity pick up was once again very unique! Now you have baited us into seeing the lamp Scoutcrafter restored! Hope you can find a good location for it finished! Your unique interests keeps us coming back for more! Thank you!
Please keep going with the lamp. Looks like right out of the 1920’s and I don’t think you’ll regret finishing it. Gotta Love those grappling hooks, too.
Another great show! Grappling hooks are pretty cool, I could see one of those coming down on top of my head with the first use! Would love to see the completed light fixture!
The gravity hook is too cool. As for the lamp, I know the feeling of starting a project and then having the proverbial wind knocked out of my sail. If you don't feel good about finishing it then junk it....this is your channel and your time, spend it however you like. Cheers
@@ScoutCrafter sometimes we would build 3 sets a week. Back in the 70’s they built a bunch of 1300 square foot homes. Not a very elaborate kitchen. It takes more to live these days. My last set of cabinets had multiple drawer stacks, had pull out shelves, panel doors, soft close hardware on everything. We used to put Formica tops on everything but now I rarely see Formica on anything other than fishing cabins.
Too late 😂 here I go Amazon! Actually this invention is genius for people like me. I’m always dropping tools or parts and I can’t bend over like when I was 20. 😆🤣
I think I would like to see you finish the lamp but I sure couldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to. You make that call. If you aren’t going to use it I don’t know if I would sink a lot of money into it. Anyway, great show today! Thank You for sharing!!
That's what we do on this channel, we restore old, unwanted tools back to working condition. What kind of maniac would start a project and not finish it??!!
Hi John, now you have that lamp in pieces it’s the perfect size to drop it in the bin. Sorry, but it’s certainly not to my taste. Now the grappling hook I think is a piece of modern art. I gave up trying to find a genuine one as there are just so many fakes, even Amazon is selling fakes and I can get one from Ali Express for under $10 delivered. Can you imagine how crap it must be? I went to his RUclips channel and the only thing in his store is a T-shirt. Cheers my friend, Stuart 🇦🇺
No way should you trash that lamp. You've already got time and skill invested in it. The cleaning so far shows what a beautiful art deco piece it is. When done, its appearance will be very rewarding.
