I wanted to stop by and thank you for this video. I just did this job to my wife's 99 Accord with my cell phone on top of the engine playing this video. Pause....Play....pause....play etc. Thanks for this man! it went super smooth and fixed the problem.
Thank you for a well-done video. I've been working on my 1999 V6 Accord with 301K miles as in the video. I've repeated this process several times to insure that I have everything cleaned. One time-saving suggestion is to just remove the three hoses on the "boost plate" at the back of the intake manifold that supplies vacuum via three tubes to three other points in the engine compartment. That way, you avoid having to reassemble the boost port without directly seeing it. (It is easy to mis-assemble.) P0401 can also be caused by a vacuum leak. With the metal gaskets being used in this vehicle, everything has to be super clean for the gaskets to properly seal. I also learned the hard way that the six mounting bolts may be over-torqued, causing a difficult-to-repair broken bolt extraction. I recommend the use of a torque wrench to prevent that problem. The spec is 22 N•m (18 Ib-ft).
I'm always amazed at the quality of the aluminum intake manifolds they use when Ford and others are using crappy plastic ones. I think the aluminum helps atomize fuel.
If i reuse a gasket like the EGR one ,and see scratches or have any doubt in my mind that it will seal ,then i spray the gaskets with Copper Coat. Good video
Smashing job jeremy, just a shame the customer didnt come to you first. People often think the codes are a pinpoint fault, they are not, just a pointer to the area with trouble. People have to understand the system enough to see how and where the gas goes. Now that was a goowee mess, smashing job, that should last years now :-))
Using the lag bolt was a really good idea for cleaning the port out. My engine light had been coming on, off and on for a while so the port was completely clogged.
Hey buddy Thanks you so much, because my Honda accord 1999, is having same issues, i did some cleaning but i was afraid to spray that hole, but after your saying that, i'm gonna do this Saturday or Sunday. Thank you Bro...
Did the work on a 01 Accord and the intake egr port was full of carbon. Easy fix and it passed emissions after I had the check engine light on showing the EGR low flow code.
sounds like you have a crappy autozone near you... that sucks the guys at mine are almost all certified mechanics the old one i used to go to sucked too nice repair =) mite need to do this on my sand rail i mite end up deleting my egr all together like i did on my truck =) thanks for posting the vid
Jeremy , Today I try to do most of the work on my car thanks to your informative videos that makes it possible and to forgo any perceived mistakes on my part. When my car was newer, and under the Acura/Honda warranty, I did have the pipe installed in the intake egr passage. I dont think it made any difference because it was chocked full of carbon gunk and the pipe walls were thick actually reducing the size of the passage way .;
oh man I had a 92 Accord but you had to drill the port plugs out on the intake. I wish they would have thought about that back then, in making it easier to clean
The plate in the back of the intake manifold, i only unplugged the 3 lines back there and got carb cleaner in it since i was cleaning out the same port you were. Does that cause a problem? because now i have a P0401code 65miles after i installed a new EGR.
Hey just wondering what type of gasket do we need, meaning whats it called? Valve cover gasket or a Intake Manifold gasket? If you can post a link to the specific part, that would be great! Checked Advanced Auto Farts and they don't seem to help much here. Thanks Jeremy!
I need some serious help i just did this on a friends car helping him out, and now his car is idling really high from 1500 to 2000 rpms i put everything back in order but i dont remember pulling out the gasket at the 5:55 mark to 5:59 mark can one please help!!
I have a 2000 Acura t.l. I keep getting random miss fire. I change everything u can possible think of. I just had the vavles adjusted and change the egr valves. did coals, spark plugs, fuel filter everything and I'm still getting miss fire.
+anoose bass I did everything brought it to the dealer and they seem to can't find the problem. I realize after I clear the code. when it idle for awhile that's when the check engine light comes back on.
Would this process basically be the same for a 2010 accord v6? I got the check engine light and it scanned a p0400 which is egr leak/flow for that year. I'm going to try and clean the ports first instead of spending money replacing the egr valve.
Hey can you post a video showing how to clean the solenoid valve gaskets i have the same as you i got a 1998 Honda Accord V6 with 310,000 miles on it. if you could do this that would be awesome!!!
Hey jeremy the issue i am having when i spray the cleaner in the top port and expecting it to flow thru the port where egr is it not flowing. is this cause it really clogged. what should i do? i have a honda accord 1999 v6.. and i am using carbertor and choke cleaner.
Robert Dobbs yea after alot of wasted carb cleaner... i filled the top hole with carb cleaner, got a air compressor and used a rubber hose so that it fit tight on the compressor end and in the top port. It just pushed it all out it was so clogged.
Very true, I'm now enjoying the over heating nightmare. It was throwing a thermostat code, so I replaced that, as well as the radiator, fan switch, coolant temp sensor, replaced hoses w/ OBX silicon hoses, new rad cap. It doesn't overheat unless I push it hard, high revs etc.. I've looked for vacuum leaks, loose hoses and actual leaks from parking over a nice clean piece of poster board with a large white microfiber towel on top and nothing, no leaks. Any ideas anyone? Also, I dynamatted my trunk being very careful with not covering sensitive areas around the cables, latches, etc. Now, it won't open in any way, remote, door switch and even the emergency exit pull string. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated as well, or anyone living in So Cal, I could meet up. Thanks for any suggestions in advance!
Hi Jeremy. my name Is Christian I am watching your video that you made ( EGR Issue PO401 Code for Honda's) I will be working on my car 1/4/16 and wanted to get some advice about this issue. Is there anyway i can get in contact with you! you video is amazing. I can send u my email info or other information if thats ok. As well I will add this comment to that video I'm watching to watch for a reply. Thanks Jeremy, Again your videos are the best I've seen that show in great detail!!!
I have a 2000 v6 vtec with 162,000 miles on it. was haviung this problem tried alkl of this and nothing. changed the main relay and it stopped for a good 4 or 5 months and is now doing it again. i changed out the main relay again since it had a 1 year warrantyu and that did not help. so this ius my quyestion, how often should trhis be happening? as to the clogged ports? and ius there a maiuntenance time schedule for this problem?
87 octane. Anything more is a waste of $$$ Car actually makes LESS HP on higher octane fuel since the j30a has no means to advance the timing (does not have a knock sensor)
pochoun33137 its a 1999 and a weird car for sure. i got it because it was so different. if the transmission was normal i would love it. its pretty quick but not consistent at the point. might need to change the fluid. thanks for the reminder!
pochoun33137 regarding the intake manifold and egr stuff....it was a bad fuel injector, plugged fuel line. i tried to fix it but didn't go far enough to the injector since i am clueless. so the mechanic hit me for $800. the whole point was to avoid that fee but i gave up too early.
pochoun33137 no, and the first time i went to him. he didn't communicate for the 2 days he had the car then hit me with the bill. very suspicious. said the fuel line was gunked up and bad injector. it did drive perfectly fine after they did their thing. i took the manifold off and sprayed it clean, same with egr. they didn't seem that bad.
That's bc of the transmission solenoids get clogged/dirty. I have an '02 TL Type-S w the same problem, shifting hard as if there was a shift kit installed in it until I found that out. The cure/fix that worked for me was doing the 3×3 flush, after having all the solenoids cleaned out, used Redline ATF instead of the factory crap, and added a Trans cooler. Since then, I've put almost 100,000 miles on the car, and not having the Trans flushed again or anything like that, and I can still, just barely, feel the car shifting gears while I'm driving it like I stole it. Hope this helps you out, If you still have the car. Cheers

i had a closet full of gun cleaning brushes! i didnt even think about those! thanks for the tip!
yeah and for some reason the plastic intakes seem to warp and create vacuum leaks....esp on fords.
Thanks for the clear and to the point instructions. none of that long winded story telling that nobody is interested in.
Just did my 2001 Accord and it passed the e test Nice video

Nice video, Jeremy. Keep us posted, I like to know if that took care of the code. Thanks!
Did the work on a 01 Accord and the intake egr port was full of carbon. Easy fix and it passed emissions after I had the check engine light on showing the EGR low flow code.
you too db!
Appreciate it.
Glad you put a new video up!hows working from home going?im seriously considering doing the same.have a nice weekend jeremy

Thank you so much for your nice details video
Thank you
your video was awesome. thank you so much. very through.
Thank you !
Any news Jeremy ?

Damn, that Honda had 296,XXX miles on it..
Mine has 297k
Mine is still fairly new with 262K. Of course I need to get in there and clean the EGR ports, just kind of dread messing with it.
That is 3 chevy
I need some serious help i just did this on a friends car helping him out, and now his car is idling really high from 1500 to 2000 rpms i put everything back in order but i dont remember pulling out the gasket at the 5:55 mark to 5:59 mark can one please help!!
+anony mous just re looked what i mentioned above i never removed that just a hose with a clamp and 2 smaller hoses
What were your symptoms of it being clogged up?
Check engine light.
I have a 2000 Acura t.l. I keep getting random miss fire. I change everything u can possible think of. I just had the vavles adjusted and change the egr valves. did coals, spark plugs, fuel filter everything and I'm still getting miss fire.
+shyeem63 did you test your coils? i had the same issue and i did a test and my number 6 coil was defective.
+anoose bass I did everything brought it to the dealer and they seem to can't find the problem. I realize after I clear the code. when it idle for awhile that's when the check engine light comes back on.

Awsome.
vaccuum leaks are also another reason, especially if all cylinders are misfiring
Can you tell me where the VTEC solenoid is at? I cannot find it on my 1999 Accord V6.
Shane Kelley it's on the oil filter housing

Anyone try this on a 3.2? I've got a 2001 acura it's pushing 400k I suspect it might need this! I Sure They Are Very Similar !
Just do it. Simple job.
THANK YOU SIR WAS VERY GOOD +10 GOD BLESS YOU
Auto-Joke, I mean Autozone.
hahah
Autojoke 😭😭😭
you should not be spraying break clean on top that open engine....
this comes from using 87 and 89 grade gas not 93 like they should be
87 octane. Anything more is a waste of $$$ Car actually makes LESS HP on higher octane fuel since the j30a has no means to advance the timing (does not have a knock sensor)

i actually did that. i learned all about the EGR valve from my mazda 626.
