His character's death pretty much heralded the end of the good writing for the show, largely because they ran out of source material but also because they lost their greatest antagonist.

Though I do like the last seasons, Charles Dance's presence WAS the show's peak. When the show started focusing on characters like Daario, it truly felt like they had killed off most of the interesting characters and had to rebuild from there.

Should've been Jon and Bran and maybe Melisandre. Jon guards the realms of men from the White Walkers. Bran and the Night King are linked and the Night King, for some reason, sees the Three Eyed Raven as his primary target. Melisandre has magical fire powers that are counter to ice, and her big secret is she's super old. NK's downfall being a team effort makes sense for multiple reasons: - It helps Jon be a hero so his hero arc isn't just a fizzle right at the end. - It helps Bran's powers serve a purpose. It helps makes us believe Bran is a true threat to the Night King. It helps us become more accepting of his reign. - Melisandre's old age could serve a purpose if she provides info to our heroes as to how to defeat the White Walkers, like recounting how they were defeated the first time around. This would give us some of the lore we so desperately expected but lacked in the actual season. - It would make the Night King seem like a properly threatening big bad if it took a concentrated effort to take him down rather than a shank from behind.

Loud and wrong...it was always going to be 8 seasons but y’all pick up these sound bites off comments and run with them. This has zero to do with Star Wars. If you had actually watched interviews with GRRM years ago you would know that it was always going to be 8 seasons as that’s what they agreed upon. It was supposed to be a season a book and GRRM wanted more so they compromised with 8. I can’t stand people that have no original thoughts of their own either. You probably watched for the dragons. The ending made total sense if you were paying attention. If you are pissed at the ending and wanted more context, be mad at GRRM because he didn’t finish the books like he said he would when they started this project. They are working from his outline so most of what we saw was his ending without all of the context because he didn’t do what he said he would do. Don’t understand the logic of people wanting them dragging out the seasons when he still hasn’t produced a book and this is supposed to be an adaptation not original work. Be lucky they didn’t pull the plug in season 4 / 5 after it became clear he wasn’t going to publish the books.

MikoButter Watch GRRM’s recent video...a reporter asks him why did GOT end at S8 and George says “Ask David & Dan, they were the only ones that wanted to end it. HBO said how ever many seasons we could’ve gone to 13” So settle down SIR. I’ve watched the series many times and I’m very familiar & up to speed on the show because I’m a huge fan. I can give a shit less about dragons tbh, take them out and I’d still watch the show. Regardless of how the show ended it was still very rushed and sloppy, many plot holes, and teleporting within scenes. If Daenerys was going to become mad then D&D should’ve transitioned that and showed us more of her being mean oppose to 2/3 episodes. Character development has been shredded within some characters, IQ scores dropped on others. It’s okay to be honest and speak up on something, no one is bashing the cast & crew at all everyone did amazing.

They are excellent writers. They wrote Battle of the Bastards and Winds of Winter which are two of the highest rated episodes in the series without the book. People seem to forget that this was supposed to be an adaptation. There is no scenario in which this ends well for them without GRRM finishing the books. They were going off his outline to wrap the story up and I’m guess didn’t want to deviate too far from that. GRRM will have the benefit of seeing the reaction to his thoughts for the ending and taking his sweet time to churn out the books and change things based on what y’all are complaining about and you’ll will call him a genius. This hate train for D&D is too much. If you hate the ending then you hate what GRRM told them the ending was, not what they came up with.

@@EIizabethGrace It's sad but i'm fairly certain this is what has/will happen. If you think about some other great shows that garnered world wide attention - such as 'Lost', which ended very badly - no one talks about it now other than as an example of how to end something badly. GOT will join it's ranks.
Maybe for some, such as yourself, the final 3-4 episodes were not that bad, perhaps you binged watched it late on its life or watched it casually over the years so you were not that invested in the show. For those who were invested, the overwhelming majority see the final season has something horrendous, an awfully disappointing series of endings. The final season destroyed so many character arc's, with characters acting completely out of character, their actions unearned (due to a rushed plot or just plain illogical plot points in some cases).
There was no development for many of the characters sudden, coin flipping turn - as such this season has retroactively destroyed previous seasons, and along with it any legacy that this show could ever have.
Many, such as myself, can never watch it again knowing what happens and what these beloved characters, absurdly, become. It has undone so many seasons of character and plot development through the mockery that was this final season.

    • @EIizabethGrace
      @EIizabethGrace 5 лет назад +5

@@blower1 Maybe it's cause I watched Lost all at once after in haired, but I never got why the ending was SO widely hated. I didn't mind it. That definitely does not apply to GOT, which I've been watching since I was probably too young to watch it (I think maybe 7-8 years ago). I think it's still better written than many other shows, but it was rushed, with plot holes being used as plot devices. That said, once I accepted that, I was able to enjoy the well-written dialogue and the good plot points that were the pillars of a rushed storyline.
I also didn't see anything straight-up inconsistent with any major character arc. Arya and Bran were blatantly smacked onto the scene out of nowhere, but even then it's not like they ended anywhere it was unrealistic for them to end, they just lacked foreshadowing and development. Others that were shunned, in my opinion, were absolutely consistent with previous seasons and well done, aside from being rushed.
Dany's storyline, for example, was totally warranted and consequential. She's shown signs of having a Messiah complex and an obsession with the throne from the get-go, and this worsened in season 8.
At first it was about her being upset at the Northmen for not seeing her as their rightful queen, then it was about putting her quest for the throne before Jon's values, then before Missandei's life, then the unchecked show of vengeful anger against those who had challenged her/harmed her and those who hadn't rebelled in her favour. Everything was topped off by the ultimate expression of her true nature: essentially referring to herself as an enlightened leader whose authority was the absolute solution to all the issues of the world, as could be expected from a well-meaning megalomaniac who thought so highly of herself that she saw everything that led to her victory would be ultimately justified.
It was insanely rushed, far too much to be convincing without a lot of creativity on the audience's part, but if you look at the skeleton of the storyline, it was the logical consequence of her evolution throughout the show. She started as the underdog, but it became more and more clear that as time went on she was just becoming more of an embodiment of the DSM's definition of a narcissist and that her intention of "breaking the wheel" was about definitely stopping it through what she thought of as an enlightened dictatorship.
Jaime was also a huge disappointment to many, but I don't personally think his arc was thrown away. He went back to Cersei, which makes 100% sense given their mutually toxic, genuinely loving, co-dependant relationship. That doesn't take away his growth. He broke away from his family, realized how his upbringing had fucked up his perception of the world and of himself, reinvented himself, fought honourably against the dead despite Cersei's wishes, developed connections with people he would have despised beforehand, he chose to take care of his sister and their baby instead of committing the umpteenth, unnecessary murder in Westerosi history. He ended his life in the same place he started it, but as a very different man who had had quite literally changed the world, and I found it satisfying. I especially thought this was embodied by his last words being "nothing else matters", which had always been his way of putting is family above everyone else, and ended up becoming a wholesome statement he used to calm the woman he loved seconds before dying, when truly nothing else mattered.
Cersei was also reflected in her death. That human side of her that we saw so rarely, but that was at the core of everything she did, visible once everything else was stripped away. Even just from a psychological point of view, people like Dany are often so charming they're mistaken for great leaders, while those like Cersei are often mislabeled or even misdiagnosed as narcissists or antisocial people. I found it great that they were put in such stark contrast as we kind of got to see the most hidden, and potentially the most real part of their personality.
Sorry for the super long reply btw.

Nathan Goddard Not trying to come across as patronizing here, but it think it’s because you’d idealized them. GRRM always meant everyone to be a gray character, sometimes disguising some as something else at first and then revealing their ambiguous nature. The show also missed that memo a bit and made especially Dany and Jon a sort of heroic heroes with few, unimportant/endearing faults. Coming back to George’s plot points, therefore, made it even harder to adapt for people who had picked them as pretty obvious favorites, which would already been problematic in the books.

On the "too impotent" part, I assume you may be talking about Cersei, perhaps Jaime, Varys, Tyrion and maybe even Dany in an odd way. At least, those are the ones people seem to think were sort of messed with improperly. I would agree with Varys and Tyrion, cause they were definitely dumbed down, and I guess Cersei in that she realistically would have put up a better fight. He made a seriously complex story, and if the end he has in plan really IS similar to the show... he's got to be able to convincingly get the characters there - Up to the last season, we don't see Daenerys being mad (insane). We do see her being brutal to her enemies, which is not the same.
Through very unbelievable story (she kinda forgot about Euron's fleet, etc), they tried to pile things up that would make her snap... but there was no real underlying evidence that she would, or what she would be like if she did.
I could definitely see her being angry AF and going after the source - Cersei - directly... but slaughtering the entire city? Nope. Didn't make sense for her character at all, not to that point in the course of the show.
Jon Snow was also spineless and barely an extra. Tyrion was stupid. I figure Tyrion would have understood that if he could have gotten Jon to pull his head out of his ass, Jon could have stopped Daenerys from doing something drastic.

If you want to bask in the glory of praise, also accept the critique from the same fans if it becomes crap.
Acting was still great. Production quality superb. The writing was objectively very bad in many instances. Just to name two: 1) Daenarys turns entirely out-of-character without any build up, and 2) everyone dies in episode 3 and episode 4 tries to sell us it was only half of all forces. No, it was not. We saw the crypts, inside of the castle, and the aerial shots of Winterfell ... a handful of people stood on many times more corpses.

In addition, fans don't actually deserve anything...you like it because some creator made it...if you don't like it anymore...than go and do something else with your time and your money. You aren't entitled to anything, and especially art.
If you look at Attack on Titan, and the controversy around the ending of that series...look at what that backlash did to the author who didn't deserve that kind of treatment at all and fell for said backlash. The ending prior to the revisions he made was perfect in my view, and even after the revisions it's still perfect...and the fans still complain about it. Isayama has no obligation to change the creation he made from his brain...because it was always his story...it's not his fans story. It's his. That's the end of it really.

Sophie shouldn't have gone down that specific avenue, it's much owed to the fans worldwide for having made all this possible; the criticisms are testament to how much love we had had for the show. While the petitions may seem to somewhat undermine the crews' hard work, they are mostly criticizing D&D's abominable writing and little else. Even if such were not the case, saying something like that disrespects the fans and actually the crew too, as much as she thinks the petitions disrespect the crew. Tormund hit the nail on the head. Game of Thrones doesn't follow the rules of storytelling, it follows the rules of life. Let it sink in. Then rewatch season 8.

Disrespectful? Respect is something earned and should go both ways is it not? It's a show that became iconic due to its wonderful writing and a massive fandom who cares a lot about the work for years. It won't be where it's at if not for BOTH of those. So speaking of being disrespectful, well...

Sophie likes the ending.. that's convenient of her when her character is like the only one with a good ending or one that did make sense.
Bless all the rest of the actors too for pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this and the writers throw it in like that just as they didn't want to be predictable 😓 I would of rather predictable then what we got, the actors deserved so much better and so did the fans. Its been a year or two and I'm still like RE DO THIS
Make season 8 a bad dream of Bran and he wakes up and it's season 9 and we get the ending we all deserve!
It's like the characters lost all shred of development.. Like all the questions were left so unanswered. I will not watch the spin off , not a hope in hell. Not until they remake this mess

HBO should have cancelled the series after S06. It would be remembered as a timeless classic. Anyways whats done is done. Redditors have done a wonderful thing by donating to charities endorsed by Clarke and Harrington. To quote from another ruined Series- House of Cards- "What else can we do but take what seems meaningless and try to make something meaningful from it"

Oh for crying out loud all this fuss over the ending , it was never going to be a 'Disney ending' all through the whole series's characters who you didn't want to die, ended up dying, good characters got hurt, but George himself said that's what he likes about the whole show and he didn't want a typical happy ending. Also when you get to watch the whole show over again you get to realise why things happed the way it happened at the end. I loved the last season and ending because it wasn't what everyone expected, it made a refreshing and more realistic ending to the normal films

Sophie Turner's statement is so tone deaf. I think the entire fandom respects the work the actors and production crew, it couldn't be anymore clear that the problem that people (including a good portion of the cast apparently) have is the writing and D&D flagrant disregard for ruining something people invested 10 years into for the sake of advancing their own careers.

its disrespectful to give customers a half finished product. those "fans" paid moeny for subscriptions for those 6 episodes. if only actors and writers were forced to give back money when they provide a shitty service. its the only industry were you pay before knowing what youre buying.

To bad we will probably never get their actual opinions because of what that can do to their careers. Sophie turner couldn't even look at the writers their entire table reading but still has to say that the petitions are disrespectful, knowing full well practically nobody is criticizing the actors, but to be fair, she was body shamed for years for no discernable reason so her statement is partially due to that fact as well. Conleth was openly depressed and angry about his character ending for months, and now George R.R. Martin's legacy is tarnished with the final two seasons.

I contrast this ending with the Supernatural ending after 15 years where not everyone was happy either, but at least it made sense. If you are a hunter long enough, you will die. That's real life. Plus there were a lot of limitations because of COVID-19 that last season. In GOT almost NO ONE was happy because it was just bad writing, the characters had their story arcs broken, and their actions didn't seem realistic. It's like they flipped a coin (or like in D&D games, dumb D&D just rolled the random dice) in deciding who would live & die, who would go crazy, and who would be made king.

I've seen so many interviews where the actors say something along the lines of "we worked really hard on this so you can't say it's bad because that's disrespectful"
Maybe it IS disrespectful. Maybe you DID all work really hard on it. But that doesn't mean what you did is good.
Let's say I go into the forest, cut down a tree, shave off the bark, cut the wood into boards, sand them down smooth, screw them together into a box shape, hinge a lid onto it, and paint it all up to make a chest. That's a lot of hard work. If the sides are uneven and the lid doesn't close properly, the paint job is bad and it's near unrecognizable as a chest, ot was still a lot of hard work. But it's a bad chest.
You czn work really hard and still put out a bad product. At the endnof the day that's what happened. You worked really hard, you did your jobs well, but the finished product was jot good.

Sophie’s response is wierd. No one is saying the first 6 or 7 seasons of GOT was bad. It was really good for a long time. All we are saying is that season 8 was horrible and an example of why you shouldn’t rush the story when there was no logical reason. I would have rather they ended with the wall coming down in season 7 and leave it at that. Any of us could have imagined a far better ending than what was given.
