- Erika Koines, a 15-year-old freshman, followed her classmates outside as a fire alarm rang, then found her classroom already closed after she heeded an administrator’s scream to go back inside, she recalls in the video above. “Where do we go?” she asked. “Just run to any open room!” she was told.

Hey Erika Koines, just thought I'd share that just because you weren't hurt doesn't mean you haven't faced something traumatizing. I see your eyes flash when talking about certain parts like a trauma response. I have PTSD so I hope you know it's ok if you still have to work to get through the way it made you feel. These things can have an imprinting effect.

everyone handles things differently. While some 15 year olds may break down and never in a million years be able to talk so publicly about what happend- others can do it. That's not to say she's completely fine, she may be still going through a LOT on the inside, but she probably wants to tell her story and she's someone who is able to keep composure

This is why I hate that my sister is a senior and I’m a freshman. My sister and I only have 1 class together, and the rest of the classes, we’re in two different buildings. My sister’s classes are in the main building, where the shooting would probably happen. I feel that my sister be the one that get shot. I just have that feeling. I wouldn’t able to do anything without my sisters I can’t be happy without her, she’s my rock.

When the fire alarm was pulled, that was the shooter trying to get more people into the hallways so he could claim more lives. That's why the teachers said to go back inside and stay put. It is better to be in a locked classroom than out in the open trying to find exit in the hall because if you are securely locked into the room, the shooter will move on because they know that law enforcement is on the way

I feel like my school doesn’t prepare enough for this stuff. Kids talk and laugh in drills. All we do is hide and idk. Is that what your school does. I know everyone hides and stuff but I wish kids wouldn’t talk in the drills. Also the other day we went on a red code lock down (for like a minute) and my friend had a substitute in a diff. class and the sub didn’t have a lock. If that was a shooting it could have been bad. That’s why I hate having subs. Now if u r wondering why we had such a short lock down it’s because a wanted person tried to enroll their child at my school and when the front office told him he can’t he wouldn’t leave the gates of the school. Our on campus police officer handled it well though. Anyways if u made it to the end thanks. Also let me know if your subs have keys and if kids talk during drills and what your school does :)

When I was in 6th grade we had a lockdown because of an armed robbery in the neighborhood the school was in. My class had a sub that day and (not knowing what was going on and with a widely publicized shooting the week prior) she told our class that if anyone came into the room she would save herself and leave us to die. The class was made up of 11 and 12 year olds.

This effected my school a lot. Every fire drill, you have to wait for security to check cameras then announce on the PA that it's just a drill. My school still had a shooting in the morning of Valentine's day though. V. Sue Cleveland HS Rio rancho shooting.

That's why having drills is a problem. I know you have drills to learn what to do but when you don't take it serious 1 or 2 years in a row eventually you become desensitized to it and your response time becomes weak.
And yet schools still don't take necessary precautions. Why is the glass in the doors not bullet proof with decorative iron inside the glass.. or something.. this crap has been happening for some time yet schools seem lackadaisical about security.

I remember the day of the shooting right after it happened there was already new stories up and in school kids were yelling about a shooting and that entire day of school everyone just seemed very seater of everything that was happening and everyone was looking out the windows to see if anyone was outside and it was terrifying, everyone was exchanging valentines presents and a kid literally screaming “SCHOOL SHOOTING IN FLORIDA” it was terrifying for me, I can’t imagine how scary it must’ve been to be there
this whole thing freaks me out because literally the day after this happened there was a guy swinging around a gun outside my school campus and we had a whole lockdown and everything and then my school treated it like it was nothing and that it was no big deal like we're lucky he didn't start shooting but he could have and that scares me (oh by the way my school is ALSO in Florida so that doesn't help)

This is the comment I copy and paste as a reply- My friends knew people at the school. How do they fake the dead kids going off the grid? The kids dying in the hospital? The kids impaired for life as a result of their injuries? The security footage? The guy being put in prison for life?

as she said, administrator told them. There is security camera footage of kids who got outside the campus gate and administrators with walkie talkies scream at the kids to COME BACK INside - its ridiculous, and of course they listen, and these students were in the parking lot outside an exit gate.

Run to an open room?😳. Why not run from the building. Hiding in place gets people shot. Hiding under a table, in a closet or huddled together in the corner of the room, might work for tornadoes and hurricanes, but is one of the worst things you could do during an active shooter event. That would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Even a baby rabbit knows to run when the gun fire starts🙄. These schools need to change their active shooter plan. Hiding should be the last resort when run and fight aren’t available.

So, if a shooter was inside the building, the "freshman building", shooting, why would "an administrator" tell ("screaming") the kids to go back inside? It obviously wasn't the freshman building she had been in, and out, and back in. So the room they just left to go outside was closed when they came back? Why? Why are all these kids & teachers always saying something about a drill every time. So strange.
Cynthia Rogers ever heard the saying “panic kills”? It’s easier to treat it as a drill vs. immediately tell everyone the worst and erupt a mass panic. Also, during traumatic occurances like these the brain doesn’t function to its full ability, so survival instinct kicks in even when it may not be the most logical and ration in hindsight. For eg: telling students it’s a drill and to go back inside is common because by the time the news hits the teacher, they’re confused, don’t want to cause a mass panic, and are hoping it’s a drill to so they don’t want to go worst-case-scenario on them even when they know there’s an active shooter. It’s like the brain telling people “what are the chances I would die amongst all these students and the shooter just happens to be here? Better go back inside and wait it out” type thinking. Fight/flight/freeze reaction also has a lot to do with it. Adrenaline+panic kills, so its best to avoid a mass panic at all costs.

Reading the comments that people put is absolutely ridiculous. Guns are not the problem neither the teachers of our school's. The problem is all the hate that people spread. Maybe if people would be more nice to each other stuff like this wouldn't happen. It's time to grow up and quit being so hateful to everyone that you see. It's time to be mature enough to know how uncalled for it is to hurt someone.
Destiny Langwell but guns kind of ARE the problem? Think about it, if someone walked into a classroom with a knife it would be a lot harder to kill 17 people with that than a gun.
