  • Maddie Gaffney, a 17-year-old junior, spoke on the phone after the shooting with her mom, who had texted to make sure she was okay. But when Gaffney finally reached home, her mother was not there, she recalls in the video above. Instead, she was out searching with another mother who had not heard from her own child.

In the days and weeks afterward, as students and families grieved and returned to class, many of the teens who attend the Parkland, Florida, high school have been speaking out about their experiences and demanding there be changes in gun safety legislation so that something like this can never happen again.

The smile she has when she is telling us about Luke's love for chicken nuggets just melted my heart. You can see how genuine she is and the love she had for him. My heart breaks for every single victim and family member who endured a loss in every mass shooting that has taken place. This is just out of control and needs to stop.

My Best friend Eric was shot in the back when we were just 13. I'm 25 now and not a day goes by for about minute I don't think of him. Who he might have become. So many of us don't make it to adulthood. But in America, we don't matter. People like my Friend Eric are faceless. Hopefully, these kids can stop the proliferation of guns. So all the other Erics have a chance to grow up. I pray that God is on their side in this debate.

Will Wright sorry to hear that. But who protects us when criminals come out to sell black market guns? Because "cops" take for ever to respond. You should think about things like that when you're not occupied.
Let's hypothetically say I own a few guns, handguns and rifles. Ok, so cops come and take them. I have no firearms. Me being a father how do I protect my child? Someone breaks in my home and they have a gun, obviously it's illegal since ALL GUNS ARE CONFISCATED. Now, how do I protect my myself and my child????
There's always goin to be shootings, people are evil, cruel, and filled with filth.

Ryan gst Over the years I have thought about many things. Many scenarios, what if we didn't go to the pizzeria. What if we didn't cut through the park to get to the pizzeria faster. What if we didn't go to that particular pizzeria. What if we just ordered the food to be delivered. I have gone through countless scenarios. What I have never question was, when someone is pointing a gun at you there is nothing you can do. We tried to run but my friend was shot in the back. I don't know what the answers are. What do know, not only does the person pass away who is shot. The people left behind are broken.

I hate to say it but I understand her when she says the days afterwards were a blur. After the shooting at my school, I would just lay in bed, numb. If I was out in public, I’d stick close to whoever I was with and I always made sure to have eyes on the door(s). I always look around new areas bc just in case, I need to know how to escape. Some people can walk away from trauma unchanged significantly, others become new people.
And as for Luke’s mom, I understand her pain. I’m a childless teen mom. I got pregnant at 14 and lost my daughter at 15. Her birthday is Jan. 8, 2016 💕 the pain never leaves you when you lose your child(ren), you just become more numb to it as time goes on. But some days, it’s just a tidal wave crashing over you and you drown in your sorrow, in your “what if’s”, and your “whys”. Someone once told me it’s because grief is love with no place gone because the person it’s meant for is gone 💔
Me, Luke’s mom, and other bereaved parents will reunite with our lost babies one day 💕 for now, we hold our angels in our hearts until we can hold them in our arms 👼🏽

Every day I go to school I'm just thinking what if it happened here, what if it hapened to me, to my friends, to my neighbors, people I know. Because it could. And still I can't imagine this happening to me, at our school. Maybe that's the big mistake everyone makes, thinking it couldn't happen to them. Till it does.
It's more than a year now and I clearly remember seeing this on the news and having the feeling of this happening far away, as I'm from WA state. Still, it surely shocked me. And what really saddened me was that the only thing my little brother who's 12 said to all this was a rather bored: "Again, really?"
Rip to the 17 angels that had to give their lives that day.

A good friend of mine died in front of my face too. I remember just going into shock when it happened and that's how I developed ptsd from it. You are not alone g/f, it's a painful experience watching a friend die, and I've had too many of them pass on me, along with family members, it sucks, but you will get through it. A lot of people out there may not all know what it's like to go through a mass shooting, but we know what violence feels like, being that close to death myself more then four times now.
I went into my own bubble, and it took me time going in and out of psych hospitals, to get through all the panic attacks that I had from it. But I got through it i'm almost 33 now, and i'm studying criminal justice, and psychology in Denver. Even though it's a new town for me, it was great for me to leave texas, and start over because that's were all my ptsd started. By changing my surroundings, i started to heal. And you can too.

Please seek therapy or talk to a trusted friend, family member, or even an administrator. Keeping it in will make you lose your mind. These types of videos where the kids are speaking and discussing their trauma and their emotions are very beneficial to healing their minds and bodies! The more you speak about it, the less you’ll have to ponder on things. Of course you will, to this day I think about what my friend Beau and his sister Calyx would’ve been like at this moment. Keep them alive in thoughts and vigils, fundraisers and any and everything you can so that they will always be recognized. Much love

Like how 10000 deaths Happen yearly (of which 95% are gang related with guns brought illigaly from acrossed the border) then there's also the fact that 2.5 million people use guns for self defense everyyear. Why do we need to get rid of those guns and make 2.5 million victims because a few kids suffered from a wacko who would have killed anyways?

dat boi your an idiot. You know how those guns end up on the street? States that have stricter guns laws are circumvented by buyers who go to red states to purchase guns legally at gun shows no questions asked. They then bring them back and sell them for a mark up. I know this cause I’ve seen it myself. If these laws were across the board it would be more effective at reducing gun violence. But crybabies like you come on You Tube crying cause your little security blanket is in jeopardy. You wouldn’t need a gun and have to live in fear constantly if you pulled your head out of your ass. Those guns ARE coming off the market and you ARE going to stop being such a pansy.

I feel almost numb to this heinous loss. God, please soothe their heartache, the moms, dads, siblings, friends. Everybody affected. Please, Lord, let SOMEthing good come from this act of pure evil. Protect the ones who love goodness, who want You back in this lost Nation, Lord. And bring comfort to all the victims of this horrible tragedy. Amen.

I swear to god, people can never win. They have a chance to be heard so they are screaming from the rooftops. Isn't that what everyone says? "If only people who had the chance would speak up"
These are the stories that have the chance to be heard and the potential to actually make a difference. Rather then spread more hate, learn to understand and have compassion.

Maybe this was before your time but nowadays we are being educated things like drunk and/ or reckless driving, drugs and suicide. But guess what we really haven't been educated on... things like gun safety, gun violence and mental health -the things that play a big role in mass shootings. Mass shootings are becoming all too common and that's really bad. Maybe if we start educating our children about guns then maybe we can prevent this epidemic from continuing. Or maybe just maybe your scared because you see change coming and you don't like it.
Now with all that said people have protested for things that have killed people other than guns, go watch a video on those things if you care so much about them.

Empathy. For everyone who says it's fake it doesn't matter if it's staged or not. People are sharing their experience so watch and learn how people feel. If it is staged and they are actors the script had to come from someone else so the emotions are real, place yourself in there shoes and ask yourself what you would feel.
Also nothing wrong with having something staged why do people feel so betrayed just because it's staged? I watched wrestling when I was younger and people say it's staged so I stopped watching it. But as I got older i see the crowd around wrestling is still strong. "Why is that?" From a different perspective as I'm a little older from that kid who felt betrayed by wrestling because it was "Fake" I learned that wrestling relies on a lot of teamwork and the crowds response to it makes them one really big team.
So News that is staged could also have that same effect on you if you just look at it from a more mature perspective. Being older doesn't mean more mature but learning your emotions and controlling them will help you to avoid shooting up a school. Feeling empathy towards another human is important. Lastly all choices in life have responsibilities whether it's writing a comment on how fake something is or picking up a gun or my choice to write this comment for you on this video. If you're not ready to take that responsibility it's a good idea not to follow through on that choice, pro tip #1.

So the state fails to report this kid because he was kicked out for being mentally unstable, he isn't committed to a psychiatric hospital, he is reported to the FBI for post about doing this and nothing happens and you want to blame the gun. Alcohol,Drugs, and Texting drivers kill more kids yet the feel good do nothing laws that we didn't use we need more of those.

    • @constituenta5293
      @constituenta5293 6 лет назад +3

Actually, he was removed from the school for making threatening texts to another student and bringing ammunition to school to show he could make good on his threats. The law against bringing guns or knives to school neglects to mention ammunition, so technically the kid did not commit a crime. Florida has the Baker Act, which _protects_ people from being institutionalized against their will (if you can answer three questions correctly - What is your name? What day is it? and Who is the president of the United States?, you are 'sane' and cannot be held against your will). The only thing the FBI could have done that they didn't do was warn local law enforcement that this kid made a potential threat. Local LE could not have arrested him for his free speech on the internet under current law.

kayoko When are you guys going to give up on these tired old talking points? You are trying to create false equivalences that are simply absurd. People choose to drink, to take drugs, to text while driving. They can choose not to also. And hullabaloo has been raised about alcohol and drugs for years and years. Texting while driving is also brought up constantly. They get their due coverage, and then some. But these issues are completely different from gun violence. People do not choose to be shot. They can't just say, well I won't be shot today, like they can say I will stop drinking. What an asinine analogy. And guns are manufactured for the sole purpose to kill. It baffles me that it is actually necessary to explain something so blatantly obvious.

Next time an active shooter runs through your school, mall, home, with the intent to kill, rape, steal, tell him it's a gun free zone, state, and the cops are "on the way".......criminals can't be reason with, and they pick and choose what laws they follow if any. Next time a kid dies in a car crash because of texting at the wheel I want to see something done with it, next time a child is killed with a blunt object I want something done, next time a child is raped I want something done, human trafficking, gun trafficking, and drug, trafficking... what do they have in common... they are illegal...my point is criminals don't follow laws, the police come to the scene after the crime is committed and if your dead you can't fight your case in court.
