Nice little hack I do for plants that are sensitive to chemicals or chlorine, use water conditioner for fish tanks mixed with your plant water. Used to buy distilled water, but that gets expensive and all those plastic jugs are unsustainable. I saved a couple of those jugs and a small amount of the conditioner, a couple of squirts of fertilizer and my plants are loving it
Strongly advise others follow Angela’s money saving advice. Totally works!! No negative effects after 4 months doing this regularly. Remember, do NOT water your carnivorous plants this way - dissolved mineral content too high in tap water.
@@missy912 Hi. Yes, my maranta, calathea, xanthosoma and caladium seem fine. I don’t mist plants with this water (especially this category) - just for my high humidity ferns.
I have one and it’s also my favorite plant. A neighbor gave my mom a cutting over 40 years ago and we’ve made many plants from that original one over the years . ❤️
I just bought myself a variegated Maranta.. the wide variety of variegation possibilities has me obsessed! I don’t grow any other Calathea/prayer plants so hopefully I can translate my aroid knowledge 😂
hey fern!! ive found that my alocasia do well in a taller narrower pot when upsizing since the roots dont spread out horizontally a ton !! makes repotting easy too
I just now realized I have a hoya shepherdii seeing yours and your blooms. Someone had ID it differently for me before I knew anything about hoyas. Mines beem blooming like crazy and it really made me warm up to hoyas a lot (I got a ton in a package deal and almost rehomed them--I'm really glad I kept them)
I was given a mystery begonia from my coworker (who got it from her mom who got it from her neighbour lol) and after watching your videos I realized it’s a Begonia thurstonii!! I also love mine and it’s growing like a champ ☺️
I love that begonia! I've heard that begonias prefer chunky mixes/ well draining soil due to their thin roots. They may be prone to root rot? That could be why it's doing so well.
I find that when I repot my alocasia that keeping the root ball totally in tact and just dropping it in the new pot keeps them from flopping after repot! Hope this helps!
Ican't wait until my mamei gets bigger! I love crawlers so much. My mine has ruffles, and it's even pretty young. It also develops the pink veins on the back. Mine is much lighter in color, but that's probably due to immaturity. Alocasias are a pita. Imo, what they hate most is change, but I was told bright grow lights and leca, and I'm not there yet. They still have issues that look like one thing but are not so who knows.
I will never get “sick” of seeing your beautiful velvety plants. I am obsessed! I just got a baby glorious and can’t wait to get it bigger. Thanks Fern!
Philodendron will probably always be my favorite 😍 just got a Thai constellation and plowmanii and Billie....plowmanii is my favorite lol, it's still small but I love the leaves ✨️💚🪴
I love my Maharani so much it was dormant over a year through summer then winter then another summer all the time in my tent , she looks beautiful now and sometimes it good to not give up if it doesn’t take up a lot of space - so cool !tfs I can see my plants growing now with spring coming tfs
girl do i feel you on alocasia!!! i love them so much but the minute i repot it they lose all their leaves. My black velvet, frydek, and silver dragon lost all their leaves in a few days after repotting but my maharani is thriving after a repot. luckily they are all growing back after being leafless for months so at least alocasia can come back from the dead haha
Here to say that I also knock my plants down A LOT. If you're the queen, I'm the princess, lmao. I knocked over two yesterday. It'll happen right after I'm done watering, cleaning, and vacuuming, then BOOM. there goes a plant
Easy to see why these guys are your March favs. So pretty. Also lol at that Hoya for wanting top billing. Shame about the broken vine but I love your sense of humour over it, you cracked me up with the centre stage thing.
Seeing your variegated maranta is making me have so much regret that I passed one up at Lowes the other day because they also had a Ruby Cascade and I chose that 😂 I may need to go back and see if it’s still there ha
I'm so happy spring is finally arriving, I can tell my plants are a lot happier and start growing again. Your plants all look beautiful! Watching this video made me realize begonia might be my favorite genus (but hoya and philodendron are also really pretty 🥺 difficult too choose), I surely need to get the thurstonii!!
Your variegated maranta is purdy as heck! Where did you find it? I’ve never seen it in local stores or online. And don’t apologize for showing your splendid again! It’s a beauty! Lastly, I’ve had the same happen with some of my Alocasia’s where they don’t grow a new leaf for a long time then starts pushing out new growth. I am guessing they are more prone to dormancy in the winter cause that’s when mine stopped and then recently they started growing again.
Alocasia need a ridiculous amount of feed and light, which makes them pretty difficult to grow in certain areas. In my country the water has very low EC which makes so difficult to get the amount of feed that alocasia actually need to grow and size up. An edit to add that the silver cloud is a climber and the plowmanii and mamei are crawlers. the silver cloud also doesn’t have ruffles. That’s the official word on it, but it’s tricky. I have a plant that was sold to me as a plowmanii, but so far it only wants to climb. It’s still pretty juvenile though, so I’ll have to wait and see ☺️
I love begonias but I've killed them all they're too finicky for me. I gave up on them, the edges always slowly crisp up until there's nothing left or leaves drop entirely :( kinda same story with prayer plants and ferns. I've just gotten a splendid cutting I put in water, no roots yet, kinda nervous, but it's not rotten and the leaves look ok still. Hopefully it grows soon 🤞
I have a beefsteak begonia, def one of my absolute faves 🥰 It does have a very similar vibe to this, just a slightly different leaf shape. Yours looks much better than mine growth-pattern wise though, being on the trellis. I’m gonna have to try that 🤔
I think your going to keep highlighting your Splendid until I buy one. 🤣 I know, I know. . . .I’m looking but only see Splendidum being sold. I can’t tell the difference so I may get one of those. 🤷♀️
I heard that mamei and plowmanii both get the ruffled petioles but it runs down much further on the plowmanii compared to the mamei where it’s less pronounced. But honestly who knows 😂
I have a plant that looks exactly like your Mamei except it climbs? I think... I just got it a few months ago and I can't tell because there is a lot of empty stem space between the roots and the first node. Anyway, I was sold it as a silver cloud Plowmanii. But now I am wondering if it is a Mamei. Also if its a climber or crawler.... Mine also has ruffles.
Fern question & it may be a loaded one. But what kind of soil is your variegated maranta in? Is it chunky soil mix? I can’t get the soil mixture right for them 🫠
It’s chunky yet, and it seems really happy with that. I, however, am not super happy with it in that because it dries out so fast 😂 when I repot im going to put it into a more dense mix, so we’ll see how that goes 👀
I found a company called Ecuagenera that has an Americas store and a Europe store-and they have Philo Sharoniae. Except, they don’t have the OG, they have the goat (greatest of all time…or leaf shape? 😂) and another one, forget the name. Buuut they gotta get in my collection at some point this year
Just wanted to say that you should research with this shop. I am not 100% sure but i Remember it being mentioned in regard to poaching from the wild so please consider researching that beforehand ❤
