The Model 3 Performance jumps out on launch but loses in a quarter mile and in a roll race looses within a half mile because the i4 just keeps going faster. The i4 feeds in the power conservatively and has the legs at higher speeds to out accelerate. 💯
Was going to order one, but it is the first time I actually walked out of the dealership. It started of great by having to wait 30 minutes even though I had an appointment. “Good rear legroom for me. I’m at 6’1”, bla, bla.” Then sits in driver’s seat and promptly moves seat back and lowers it. Ya think the rear passenger would still be happy-ish??
I have a Model 3 and I am test driving the i4 this weekend. Honestly the supercharger network and the tech behind Tesla kept me loyal but I miss a well put together car and the luxury that came with it.
Maybe this is a weird answer, but I like the port anywhere that it is best protected from parking lot damage from careless drivers (which would then prevent charging).
There's nothing odd about the car not giving you power for those high steering angles. That's the "stability control". It's the car telling you that you suck at driving! For your given steering input, the amount of power you're asking for would cause you to spin out. You should thank BMW for preventing you from wrapping around a light pole.
Is this the best looking BMW for now? I wanted to buy it last year - but I did not have the time to wait, so I went somewhere else. I also drove the Tesla 3 and S - if you like cars...no thank you.

I wouldn’t even say generically that ICE automakers are catching up… its been Porsche and now BMW that really equal or beat Tesla when it comes to similar/better range and arguably much better performance in terms of acceleration and steering/handling saying nothing of build quality either. That’s been the confusing thing for me. Tesla is new to building cars while BMW and Porsche have been making them for 100 plus years. Sure the means of propulsion have changed, but its still a car.
Full disclosure, I’m a BMW fanboy, I have my 4th one now but leave it BMW to make an electric car that still looks, feels and performs like a car and doesn’t try to be some futuristic EV compromise.
Interesting that there is a transmission tunnel in both rows of this car, despite the power train being packaged between the axles. If they opened that space up, the rear seat would feel more usable, and the front console could have more storage. Great detail for a hands on drive. Keep it up!
BMW are developing ICE and EV on the same platforms. It’s a different economic approach and has certain advantages and disadvantages. On one hand it misses some EV packaging advantage. On the other, it will feel and behave like a BMW and the production cost savings can be reinvested in quality, which is sorely lacking in Teslas.
still amazes me that Tesla fanboys think major auto manufacturers arent going to be a significant threat. remember, Tesla has enjoyed a 12+ year head start, and just look at the competition ALREADY! And if you think a relatively poor charging network compared to Tesla is an unfixable scenario, that will change. European sales of Teslas are already down a whopping 49%.
Buttons and knobs are where they are supposed to be but I hate the buttons around the center console wheel. They feel cheap and have terrible tactile feedback.
Nice review. I've never been a BMW fanboy but I really want this car. I seriously rather have this than any other for my daily commute and the price is so much lower than e-tron/taycan/plaid. And that color holy shit.
That rear seat room looks really uncomfortable. The driver’s seat is a good bit forward when you’re sitting there. Once a taller person gets in the driver’s seat the person in the rear will need to sit on the other side or sideways. The bottom of the driver’s seat is almost grinding the bottom of your shin. The back seat rest is nearly if not 90 degrees. It looks as if you’re at a parent teacher night sitting in your child’s desk. Now that I’ve seen you adjust the chair to your seating position the only one sitting behind you are groceries and office folders. Climate controls ate something that need to be easily accessible so physical controls would really help reduce driver distraction. It looks like the torque is really strong but it also looks hella bouncy. I’d like to see some of these four door coupes give some of that trunk room back to rear seat occupants. There’s no need to have luggage room for five if the vehicle only seats three people.
Looks like a great car to drive. Very concerned about the amount of non-standard options: Heated front seats $550 Ventilated another 350 Ambient lighting 250 Wireless device charging 200 Heads up displays 1000 Drive recorder 100 So many of those options are standard these days on other vehicles. It’s nice that you can a la carte many of them while also included in a package but this is option gouging at its finest.

Curious to see how the route planning works compared to the Tesla... some people have had mixed reviews on it (the BMW system taking them to a slower Level 2 charger when a Level 3 charger is nearby, etc). Thanks again!
Debating between the i4 M50 or the Polestar 2 Performance pack in a year or two.
Even though I like Polestar, the BMW is probably the better dynamic car and better riding one.
bmw hands down
Polestar is cheaper. I purchased the similar Volvo XC40 EV since I didn’t wanted to wait a year for my preordered i40 M50 to arrive.
why do tester bmws always have NJ plates?
I'm not a big fan of the grill on a small car, but it does look better than a Tesla because it has a grill. I like the i4 more than the model 3 now!
“Good rear legroom for me. I’m at 6’1”, bla, bla.”
Then sits in driver’s seat and promptly moves seat back and lowers it. Ya think the rear passenger would still be happy-ish??
Who cares about legroom on a sporty limousine.
I have a Model 3 and I am test driving the i4 this weekend. Honestly the supercharger network and the tech behind Tesla kept
me loyal but I miss a well put together car and the luxury that came with it.
You said there was a link to the charging curve?
Maybe this is a weird answer, but I like the port anywhere that it is best protected from parking lot damage from careless drivers (which would then prevent charging).
There's nothing odd about the car not giving you power for those high steering angles. That's the "stability control". It's the car telling you that you suck at driving! For your given steering input, the amount of power you're asking for would cause you to spin out. You should thank BMW for preventing you from wrapping around a light pole.
Mine is on order i4 M50 in the Frozen Blue you showcased at ~4:25 - looks like I should be more excited than I already was!
Is this the best looking BMW for now?
I wanted to buy it last year - but I did not have the time to wait, so I went somewhere else.
I also drove the Tesla 3 and S - if you like cars...no thank you.
This is million times elegant Vs Tesla!! 🤘👏👍
800 volt charging?
It looks like there's even less rear visibility than the Tesla Model 3 or the Mustang Mach E.
The car didn't drive itself into the ambulance either. Smart.
Thank you for 4K. Good job!
By the way, I'm waiting for the i4 M50 and this beast should be ready in early spring. :-)
One thing I was curious about, though I may have missed it, what did you think of rear visibility? (The window looks rather small so I was curious)
Crap. Bring back visibility in cars. They need to put down the head restraints as well.
You showed the legroom in the back, then jumped into the front, then moved the drivers seat back. So I'm guessing, there is not much legroom in the back, unless you are small ?
I'm 6'2" and can sit in the back, but it's tight. I wouldn't want to go on a long drive back there. Great for the kids though.
I might get one
Great review. ICE automakers are definitely catching up and Teslas are becoming less and less enticing, especially with the perennially delayed FSD.
Have to agree. I love my Tesla, but the fit and finish as well as the stupid yoke are major demerits.
Agree but legacy still needs volume production, dealership model issues, public charging not as good as supercharger, meaningful software updates. Then I'd consider legacy ev
Getting mine in April! So exited
Seems like somebody did really enjoy that ride 🤙
would you go m440 or m50?
I’d be intrigued to see an i4 wagon, but I realize I’m probably in a minority…
Probably won't happen, but as is rumored recently, BMW is discussing an electric i5 wagon for the next-gen 5 series (starting in 2023/4) 😊
100% agree. It could be the best looking EV wagon around. Until Volvo release a V90 electric Polestar 😁
still amazes me that Tesla fanboys think major auto manufacturers arent going to be a significant threat. remember, Tesla has enjoyed a 12+ year head start, and just look at the competition ALREADY!
I love it.I want it.
After having a couple bmw’s, I can vouch that the acronym for bmw is Bring, More, Wallet.
I like the sound.
Where is the charging curve you mentioned was in comments/description?
Picture search for it, e.g. posted in i4talk forum
An ev that actually looks good? I'll take it
Please do a full review
The sunroof is clearly visible when the camera is pointing rearward.
Hey BMW! It's electric! Stop with the grill thing!
you tested the rear leg seat room prior to adjusting the front seat to your driving position
My 15 your old compact has tons of rear legroom when the driver is willing to have his knees in his face. ;-)
The height reminds me of the f150 lightning which is simultaneously taller AND has less clearance than the gasser.
I wonder why they kept a tunnel in the back, as there's no drivetrain there
Additional batteries in the tunnel
Why the big ass hood? Oh... for the ice motor.
Nice review. I've never been a BMW fanboy but I really want this car. I seriously rather have this than any other for my daily commute and the price is so much lower than e-tron/taycan/plaid.
And that color holy shit.
Love to see your comparison with a i4 40. Both cars are great, but is the M50 $10K greater??
you pay to play in life, nothing has changed
Hi Kyle! Thanks for the BMW EV video! How reliable is BMW's lane-centering with adaptive cruise? How does it stack up vs the competition?
I see transmission tunnel? Wth BMW?!
"this is way more impressive than iXpected" ))
Still has the drive shaft hump too
@@Ds-pw7gd Right. Functionally it’s basically a two seater, unless the front seat passengers are ten year olds.
Imagine if this had a touring wagon version
Looks like a great car to drive.
Very concerned about the amount of non-standard options:
Heated front seats $550
Ventilated another 350
Ambient lighting 250
Wireless device charging 200
Heads up displays 1000
Drive recorder 100
So many of those options are standard these days on other vehicles. It’s nice that you can a la carte many of them while also included in a package but this is option gouging at its finest.
Tesla also gets 20" wheels. That will cost you another 3k and lower your miles to 225 for the bmw
The i4 eDrive40 starts at 55.4K and i4 M50 at 65.9, not 70K. I test drove both. I decided to get the edrive40 due to range and I think it felt less heavy. Delivery in a couple of months.
It's just been a quick drive, but please leave recuperation in adaptive mode and do not set it to high. Find out all about it and thank me during the road trip.
Red with blue accents... they must have hired my cousin Winny who pimps out all of his cars that way as the interior design group head. ;-)
When will BMW release the car to the US market?
All pre-orders are sold out. Should be March
Thank you for the review. Been stuck between this and the regular M440i and you’re making this hard :(
It was between this and the tesla i ordered the tesla in september and still dont have it yet too bad thats the case with all electrics or i would of bought this. Great Review dudes 👍🏼
Nice CUE testing equipment too :)
Kyle: We’re gonna go do a quick drive in the new i4 M50i.
Jordan: What color is the interior?
Kyle: It’s a cranberry sorta color.
Jordan: I have to go back to the hotel to change my shirt and hat.
