Thank you so much for the section on DCI P3! Can you believe you're the only one to mention it out of about twenty or so G4 reviews I've seen and read so far? Subbed!
Your reviews are among the best around RUclips. Entertaining to watch, straight to the point. Thanks for shelling out such great content Erica! Cheers from Italy
Finally a reviewer who points out the over-sharpenning problem of the G3. I'v had the same annoyingness. Haven't come across anyone else talking about it and believe me I watched a lot of reviews and comparisons. Wel done Erica, great video!
Appearance, appearance, then what does most people do? Slam a case into it right? Just give me my removable cover please! Thanks LG for doing that! Let's hope that it stays that way.
I like how your videos dont just revolve around build quality and how big is the battey n stuff.. Its good to see atleast someone getting into details of how a part of the phone the company claims it works n how it actually works n affects the end user. Keep up the good work!
So my Idol 3 5.5 bit the dust in 4 months (long story) and I see Amazon has the G4 for $299 unlocked until 5/15/16. Erica's reviews always help me decide what to do and I will keep this in mind in my decision process.
***** but the G3 display wasn't great, they sacrificed brightness, gammut, and contrast for pixel density which was then hindered by the sharpening effect. It wasn't a bad display just a step back in a lot of areas.
***** I'm fully aware and I handled it in my G3. but I shouldn't have to be rooted to undo a stupid setting. Just because you fan fix it by voiding your warranty doesn't make it a good decision originally.
Hi Erica. Thank you for the wonderful review. Very informative. Will be looking forward to part 2. Have the LG G2 which I like very much. The G4 seems to have everything I'm looking for in a new phone. Really like the removable back. Thanks again. And had fun with the G4 give away.
Wonderful review Erica, need to see your part 2 about the battery life. Am leaning towards the G4 as an upgrade. Taking a break from HTC and Samsung. Keep up the good work. Xoxo
Erica--brilliant & immensely informative, as always. I just pre-ordered G4 today at Best Buy, mainly because of the camera and removable battery. Please cover these aspects & Qi charging in part two of your review.
Great review Erica Griffin , as always. I've had this phone since Thursday, and I'm loving it! I had the G3 before l got the Note 4, and I must say that it feels like coming home! Don't get me wrong, the Note 4 is a great phone with all its features and s-pen. But I've never been a fan of Touchwiz, and I found myself never using the s-pen anymore. Coming back to the G4 with the Knock code, buttons on the back and this new leather look and feel and awesome camera....my search is over, I feel content.
Thanks Erica Griffin I really enjoy your videos. I passed on the Nexus 6 and S6 so I really want this to be my phone (sdCard slot, removable battery). Waiting for part 2.
I am getting this phone simply because it's big! I like big phones. And since this one also still has the ability to swap in a fresh battery when needed, makes it that much more desirable for me. It'll be my first LG phone, hope I'm not disappointed in anyway. Between Erica and TheDetroitBorg, they make the best video reviews, very detailed oriented.
Not sure you know, but the sharpening issue on the G3 was removed with the update to 5.0 (thankfully), as I agree there really was no need for it. Disappointed about the G4 camera lacking some of the features found on the G3 though! Awesome review, as always!
Erica, you should check out a secret display option on the S6 that gives slightly cooler whites while keeping the rest like the Basic mode. It's called Adapt Display (not the same as the horrible Adaptive) and its actually kind of nice. Great video btw ;)
Awesome review as always. Just wondering, could you develop extensive battery performance tests & metrics to the extent that you do for the screens? Your analysis of the phone screens is the best EVER
The LG G4 is an improvement over the G3. I am really interested in this phone. I own the LG G FLEX and LG G 3 loved both phones. Really looking forward to this phone.
To be completely honest Erica, in my opinion, I found the sharpening easy on the eye. Then again, I haven't compared the G3 and G4 in person and only am going off of what you shown in this video. Not to say my G4 is bad, far from it, but your comparison in the video made me favor that of the G3.
Erica Griffin, Whilst I enjoy your reviews of the various mainstream tablets and phones (eg. Samsung, HTC, LG, Apple etc.), I don't think I have ever seen you examine any of the new Chinese manufacturers (such as Cubot, Nubia, Xiaomi, Oppo, JiaYu, Zopo, Vivo etc.) I have just recently brought myself a Cubot X9 (octa-core - 1.4Ghz Cortex-A7 CPU, 2GB RAM, Mali GPU based device) and am very happy with it performance (especially since I have incorporated it with a 4GB swap partition via a micro-sd). Please, do some reviews of some device from new / other manufactures and help to create public awareness of other (non-international / non-US) manufactures.
I have watched all reviews and decided to go for LG G3. Budget wise its a great device under 350$ here in Pakistan. Specs are also good,. G4 is about 150$ expensive then G3.
Very thorough review so far, can't wait for part 2! I had a couple questions about video. Does the G4 shoot 1080p video at 60 fps? Is there any time limit on how long the 1080p videos can be? Also when you are reaching out to LG could you ask them if they have any plans to fix the OIS for video? The 4k videos I've seen with the G4 have looked horrible when doing anything other than standing still due to the overaggressive OIS. That is one of the major things that is keeping me from getting this phone.
lew junn kit I thought it had optical image stabilisation. That should mean its active whatever resolution you choose unlike digital image stabilisation. Its a physical thing.
Armand Bernard Yeah, I"m pretty sure the hardware OIS is a physical thing and always on. I think the digital stabilization only works at certain resolutions and settings but I'm not 100% sure.
I think so to bjax21, that would be because the counteract the shaking of the screen by shaking the image in the opposite direction. At 100% crop, they're already at the edge of the pixels they have, so shaking it would result in black edges of the capturable image coming into view. To get a demonstration, go into microsoft word, get an image, press crop, then try to shake the crop frame about at different crop frame sizes.
I have a demo unit of this phone and I have to agree the white point is far too blue. Do not like that. And the colours look a bit to blown out, I like a bit of saturation but this is too much! Nice technical review btw as always. I like the DCI overview.
How do you think the G4's display compares to the S6? as for part 2 of the video, could you talk about the new features of the G4? after seeing and reading many reviews I kinda have the feeling the G4 is just a slightly tweaked G3. kinda like an iphone 5s compared to an iphone 5 I hope you touch on this great first part though! keep up the good work!
great video! and yes this is looking like my next phone. seeing as samsung went and pulled what they did with the s6. or sucks6 however you feel about it. keep up the great work!
Hey... Was waiting to hear your thoughts on this phone... Good job... When you do the second part could you mention the out put level of the external speaker... That would be great.
I had a go with this phone in store today and I have to say it is the phone for me, I will be ordering one soon. I'm either going to go for the brown leather version or the one in this review, then again I can interchange them which is nice :D
From what I have seen the M9 takes longer to open apps but keeps it in RAM a lot better. Could it be that it takes longer because it is doing some extra processing to keep the apps in RAM for longer? PS very nice part 1 review again! =)
One thing I wish LG did was to put a front firing speaker right along the dimple where the LG logo is. Rather than slapping it on to the back there's enough space there to place it.
Great review, really original and technical. I'm currently deciding between the G4 and the S6, leaning more towards the G4. This is on a 24 month contract. Honestly now, which one would you go with? Bearing in mind, I'll be getting rid of bloat, installing Nova Launcher and most likely a Google rom. Thanks.
eclap78 If you're gonna be slapping a ROM on I would probably recommend the G4 unless you want to go with a higher capacity S6. But that's just me personally because I like to have a phone that isn't 100% internal if I'm going to be tinkering with it.
Very good review. I am still torn between this phone and just getting an old Sam. note 4. (I just can't compare - g4 with s6, iro screen, battery, SD, build etc, but.. ). Note 4 vs G4 The differences are quite marginal. Performance is good on both, N4 is cheeper now and I am not too expressed by this plastic rim - thanks for pointing that out. Everyone told me it was metal. Sure G4 feels lighter and smaller to hold.. But then not convinced by this over saturated display. If I do get it it will be for the camera and feel.
I had one of these and it was pretty awesome. Sadly it had the bootloop issue, and the replacement I got under warranty also had the defective motherboard. I traded it in for a Galaxy S7, which I only just upgraded from.
I'm not seeing the oversharpening on my G3 to be honest. If you are talking about the thin black around the fonts and maybe icons, that could be for differentiating them from the background for certain colors. I can say one thing about display thou, when you set a single non moving background, it's much faster to go between screens.
I like your talks on display accuracy, I'm still confused why reviewers say. "This display shows punchy colors" and then say it's a accurate display. Almost all of them do that. Saying a display is very vivid is saying it's not accurate in itself
Hey Erica, have you tried the Jaybird Bluebud X bluetooth earbuds? They sound pretty good as far as bluetooth headsets go and you wouldn't have to worry about smacking that headphone cord while you're running.
I have played with it at the phone store, the leather bck one, feels ALOT better to hold, I don't know if I will get it or not, however, right now, LG does offer a free extra battery, and chsrger to charge it, that's cool !
Are you so sure the sides are of a plastic build? maybe it just has a very thick coating on it. did you also see the plastic material underneath the coating? I ask this because MKBHD says that (in both his video's)its a metal build with a coating ontop of it.
I really want this phone. It's $279 new at B&H. Much cheaper than when it first came out. But potentially experiencing the dreaded bootloop flaw is keeping me from getting it.
So Erica Griffin I see you went on about the downsizing of colour gamut for movies (interesting I didn't know that) , however is the same true of photos and pictures? Is there gamut also downsized for still pictures?
Hey Erica Griffin, would you happen to know why the "Users" section is missing from my T-Mobile Lg G4? I've seen many videos about this phone on T-Mobile and Version, but those devices have the "Users" setting. This is really weird as I have gone though the entire settings menu and have found nothing. Any thoughts?
Hello! I would like to know what smartphone between these ones would you recommend me to buy. I mean what is the best one: LG G4, iPhone 6/6 Plus, Galaxy S6/S6 Edge, Sony Xperia Z4 and HTC One M9. Thank you and nice video.
Just watch your video on g3 so, this statement/question is in retrospect. Ok in your video u commented on contrast also dem whites and not so black blacks. Furthermore I look into that and it might be a quick fix. Also its not well know because, its not under screen settings. Jus youtube how to fix lg g3 contrast just curious to see if it fixes the problem I value ur opinion
I have recently got the LG G4 dual SIM H818N , which had marshmallow straight from the box , and there are a lot of features on my phone that, are not on the phone that you were using in your display, would you perhaps Try to do and second video with the LG G4 dual SIM or even just on the new version with marshmallow from the box in 2016. plus you did not address, what apparently is one of the biggest sale features of this phone which is the camera thank you Erica.
Today I managed to get my hands on G4 because it has arrived to my country finally. T-Mobile carrier was where I found a charged one. I took some 4K footage and some pictures in manual mode also saving the raw files. I can confirm that (G4 as it sold now considered a final product) the bitrate is 30092kbps according to VLC. So I took a 4K video with the Note4 (could not find a charged S6 or S6 Edge on display) and it records at a 47720kbps. So if LG not going to give you clear answer (I hope not) my footage is at anyone's disposal if needed. I hope they bump up the bitrate with an update. Also the version on display was a brown leather variant and after a 3ish minute 4K recording it become hot, I mean a little bit unusually hot.
do think the front facing camera for the lg g4 should just a lilttle wider like the samsung galaxy s6? maybe you can pass that idea on to lg for them to think about?
Just a question..... The new smartphones they all use thermal throttling? In a smartphone or tablet, processors will ever run at the full potential at the maximum frequency? Hope the trend wont be like the 810.....
What I don't understand is why a display with a wider color range should show wrong colors? I don't think that oversaturarion and wrong colors has anything to do with the color gamut.
Michael Kehm A display with a wider color range isn't the problem. The problem is that you must have content that is made for it (or have a color managed OS - Android is not) , or the content won't look right. This problem is called color space mismatch. When you take a smaller color space like sRGB and just place it on a wide gamut display, all it's saturations just stretch outward to fit that wider gamut. So suddenly 100% green moves to 120% green. 50% green moves to 70% green. Green would be 20% oversaturated, etc. If we had color management within android, we would have the ability for the color saturation points to be mapped correctly to sRGB. So instead of green stretching out to 120% then the points would be mapped to the right place. Saturation has everything to do with the mapping of those points. If there is no set of instructions about what to do with the content, the content will just adapt any old way...not good thing. You really need to have content that matches the color space.
the S810 doesn't impress much, ya but on the gaming benchmarks you can see how it uses less resources and gets more gaming time everytime, that's something to consider if you care about gameplay
Warning please be cautious if you plan on buying the LG G4. I am a Samsung guy but when the Verizon rep suggested the G4 I gave it a chance. It can with an extra battery, battery charger, and sd card so I went for it to try something different. At first I kind of liked the phone but realized what major issue that is a deal breaker. For some reason the phone does not like to clear out what is running in the back ground. Take the battery out and put it back in and apps will still be loaded in the back ground. Ok I have swiped them away BUT the phone still lags when trying in text. It will miss letters or try to catch up and double them. I think it related to task running the background. This lag and locking up is such an issue that I hate this phone. Please be ware if you decide to buy one!!!
For longevity I would go g4 as Samsung devices are known to not age very well. Partially due to touch wiz but so far it looks like the galaxy s6 is gonna be the same :(
Thank you so much for the section on DCI P3! Can you believe you're the only one to mention it out of about twenty or so G4 reviews I've seen and read so far? Subbed!
I don't think the others know about the subtle intricacies of color science...I sincerely hope they catch on!
Your reviews are among the best around RUclips. Entertaining to watch, straight to the point. Thanks for shelling out such great content Erica! Cheers from Italy
I love how you go into depth with display technology. No other tech reviewer does this.
This is literally the most detailed review I've ever seen. Can't wait to watch part two, subscribed!
Erica is the only one who goes into serious detail about the display, and I'm grateful for that.
Thanks for the review!
TheBuggerbutt08 it's either that or install some kind of rechargeable battery cover to keep me going, defeating the "thin and pretty" factor.
I like how your videos dont just revolve around build quality and how big is the battey n stuff.. Its good to see atleast someone getting into details of how a part of the phone the company claims it works n how it actually works n affects the end user. Keep up the good work!
Never seen like this deep review before...
Such amazing details and comparison with other flagships...
Waiting part II
THANKS :)
Erica your so insightful and knowledgeable about smart phone screens you make me now look at them differently
So my Idol 3 5.5 bit the dust in 4 months (long story) and I see Amazon has the G4 for $299 unlocked until 5/15/16. Erica's reviews always help me decide what to do and I will keep this in mind in my decision process.
I absolutely LOVED how you talked about the display. I was looking for someone to describe it as thoroughly as you! Thanks (:
I don't understand why people complain about the display on the lg g3. It looks normal to me. But I'm not that picky.
***** it isn't a setting toggle. I shouldn't have said that. When I did it I had to flash something to undo it.
***** How long will the G3 be on sale for??
Thanks for such an in depth review it's appreciated...I mean I already pre ordered my G4 but I still appreciate the info! Can't wait for part 2
Alot of times I watch your videos just for the screen portion. Keep up the good work.
Hopefully part 2 will be released before I get the phone next Friday. Great job on this.
Hi Erica. Thank you for the wonderful review. Very informative. Will be looking forward to part 2. Have the LG G2 which I like very much. The G4 seems to have everything I'm looking for in a new phone. Really like the removable back. Thanks again. And had fun with the G4 give away.
Nice video! Cant wait until part 2!! Love these videos, good jobb!!!
Wonderful review Erica, need to see your part 2 about the battery life. Am leaning towards the G4 as an upgrade. Taking a break from HTC and Samsung. Keep up the good work. Xoxo
Wow! You are thorough with your reviews. Great job!
I really like technical thoroughness in your reviews (comparing framerates etc)
Very nice video professionally put together(clarity)!
Erica--brilliant & immensely informative, as always. I just pre-ordered G4 today at Best Buy, mainly because of the camera and removable battery. Please cover these aspects & Qi charging in part two of your review.
omg i love how you go really deep in all these details. especialy about that sRGB thing. Btw im going to buy this phone next week

Interesting comment on DCI-P3 that I haven't read/heard anywhere else. Good job.
I just pre ordered the LG G4 with black leather back. I can't wait to get mine.

Phonearena's reviews sucks..
I got the G4 for the Mrs and absolutely loves it.
Your All You Need to Know review about G2 made me buy it. And now this one will make me by G4 :D my G2 died :(
I have the G3 and I am definitely heavily considering getting the G4, it would be a fairly nice upgrade.

Nice review Erica !!
I have watched all reviews and decided to go for LG G3. Budget wise its a great device under 350$ here in Pakistan. Specs are also good,. G4 is about 150$ expensive then G3.

You are such a Hard-Worker

Thank you for this review! Do you intend on doing an "All you need to know" on the Galaxy S6 as well?
Looking forward to part 2 for the LG G4. My AT&T version is on order and should ship next week. (06/05/156)
I didn't think people made videos about a phone at 12:56 AM! Video is still great though.
I love your work! Would love to participate in another giveaways hahaha keep it up, xo from Brazil ;)
lg g4 or iphone 6s plus? Also gotta say I just found your channel and am really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work.
Hey... Was waiting to hear your thoughts on this phone... Good job... When you do the second part could you mention the out put level of the external speaker... That would be great.

One thing I wish LG did was to put a front firing speaker right along the dimple where the LG logo is. Rather than slapping it on to the back there's enough space there to place it.

T-Mobile has the LG G4 with brown leather available along with a free 128 gig SD card and 50$ off full retail price.
Erica Griffin What camera did you use to shoot this video? Very nice quality.

Yes, the G4 is slightly bigger than the edge and the m9, but you get a5.5 inch screen. To that!
I really want this phone. It's $279 new at B&H. Much cheaper than when it first came out. But potentially experiencing the dreaded bootloop flaw is keeping me from getting it.
CrazyWedz cheaper on Amazon, ebay and Newegg
Road Warrior
I went with a Moto phone
CrazyWedz That's a good choice too.
Erica Griffin you are a tough critic when it comes to displays on flagship smartphones hahaha!
Has Google fixed the issues with the display on the nexus 6 with the recent updates?
Erica I wanted to ask you, how do you get the free phones? (The review models). I want to start reviewing phones, but it costs so much
how you can compare size of the phone with 5.5 inch display to phones with smaller displays?? maybe you should compare lg g4 to iPhone 4 ?
So Erica Griffin I see you went on about the downsizing of colour gamut for movies (interesting I didn't know that) , however is the same true of photos and pictures? Is there gamut also downsized for still pictures?
This applies to all content.

Hello! I would like to know what smartphone between these ones would you recommend me to buy. I mean what is the best one: LG G4, iPhone 6/6 Plus, Galaxy S6/S6 Edge, Sony Xperia Z4 and HTC One M9. Thank you and nice video.
How much did you notice the slight curve of the display in your testing?
Ian Templin It's noticeable and I actually really love it! I hope to see more displays like it!
Erica Griffin That's good to know - thanks!
+Erica Griffin where can I find that wallpaper?? thanks
Are you doing an "All You Need to Know" for the Galaxy s6?
yes!!!!
Hi Erica, i currently own an LG g3 and I'm due for an upgrade in July. If you were me would you buy this phone or wait on the Galaxy note 5? Thanks
hey Erica love your vids. I'm due for an upgrade in 3 weeks. need help. LG g4 or the m9?? in your honest opinion.
I don't think that oversaturarion and wrong colors has anything to do with the color gamut.
you must not have listened to a word I said.
Erica, I just read that the G4 doesn't support quick charging out of the box....you have to get a Quick Charge case. Please confirm
No, that applies to the Quick Circle case and needing that for Qi wireless charging. Quick Charge 2.0 is supported.
the S810 doesn't impress much, ya but on the gaming benchmarks you can see how it uses less resources and gets more gaming time everytime, that's something to consider if you care about gameplay
Phone is awesome. Gave up my oneplus.
+rueben44 I will not trust soemone who start with I´m a Samsung guy sorry
+jmsauza1 Exactly what I was thinking😂. However, I own the G4 and I'm very pleased with it. I've experienced no lag at all
*7 months later* I also have a G4 and it used to have similar issues until the marshmallow update fix everything
is the LG G4 better to get than the Samsung Galaxy S6? I'm about to order one and can't decide which is best for using for 2 years. Please help ASAP!
For longevity I would go g4 as Samsung devices are known to not age very well. Partially due to touch wiz but so far it looks like the galaxy s6 is gonna be the same :(
You rock!
