On Labor Day weekend, we took to the backyard to pick some fresh hops from a 5 year old hop garden. Rather than dry and package the hops this year, we picked them and put them right into the kettle. A First Wort Hopping (FWH) and a big hop stand round out our first ever Wet Hop Harvest Ale.
Cheers and Brew On!

I enjoyed this episode very much! It was one of my favorites among the ones you have done.I am very envious because I have tried to grow hops here in Austin,TX with very little success.
+Chuck Brockmann Thanks Chuck - we tried some new things on this video and we appreciate your note. This video is our favorite as well.
I love the homegrown hop serious. I'm growing three bines of Cascade hops, here in Kansas. Over the years (seventh season, I think) I've had mixed results due to the hot, and some time droughty, summers. You've inspired me to give it a more concerted effort. Love the work Brew Dudes! Cheers!
Here's to a great harvest this year. - John
I like those Hop vines , a good Video.
We do too. Can't wait to have another great growing season!
Good stuff guys, I'm still waiting for my home-hops to be established. Mine our only in their second year. Would have loved to seen tasting notes on that hop bomb
.
Tasting video will be posted in a couple of weeks.
Massgrowstv and Massbrewstv ❤'s this!
Thanks! I do too!
Planted rhizomes in April. Limited sun. 1 got 6 feet tall and has a couple dozen buds on it. The other is only 4 feet tall and struggling to keep up. Thanks for sharing. #p3brews
They do get stronger over the next few years. By year 3, you should have a strong harvest. - John
@@BrewDudes Kuhl, plucked them (3 grams dry) of buds and put them in wort. look forward to next season.
Great video! Lots of good clear info.
Are those hops in the video growing on a south facing wall? About how many hours of direct sunlight are they getting?
Yes - it is a south facing wall. During the growing season they get 8-9 hours of direct sunlight. - John
some feedback on the brew -would be great. How was it taste wise how different were the results from wet hops vs dried ? Thanks
When we tasted the beer, there was certainly a fresh hop - a little grassy - taste to it. It only differed slightly from other dried homegrown hopped beers we brewed in the past - John
Is beer mash similar to brewing tea, where if you squeeze out the blossoms it makes the liquid more bitter?
I haven't had experience with making a hop tea and squeezing cones. Bitterness tends to come from boiling the hops for a long time.
Awesome video, I'm planning on starting some hops next spring. Where in Maine are you guys?
We are in Massachusetts. Go for it - it takes some time but it's rewarding. - John
I'll be doing my wet hop beer this weekend. What yeast did you guys use?
We used the Giga Vermont IPA Yeast GY054. Fermented fast.
Can I harvest the cones when they are dry? Like brown dry?
Ideally, you want to harvest the cones when they are still green but paper dry to the touch. There is a small window of time where that is the case. Year over year experience will help you to understand the best time to harvest. - John
Hey do those hop bines do any damage to the house?
No damage yet. They are secured above the porch screen.
Brew Dudes how about the rhizomes being close to the house foundation, any risk of damage to concrete? I am thinking of doing a trellis close to the house and just wanted to be sure
No issues to the foundation. I have them against my shed and they have been there for over six years.
Brew Dudes thanks again man I really appreciate!
You are welcome - that's what we are doing this stuff for. - John
Chinook is pronounced sh nook
Noted! Cheers! -Mike
