  • Roof rack pads can be a great, removable system for transporting kayaks and surfboards on the roof of your car. These roof rack systems can be bought online, but, for the frugal ocean-goer, making your own can be a super cheap way to get some versatile roof racks that will last you a long time.
    You'll need:
    x4 tie downs with thumb-releasing buckles (4.5m in length) amzn.to/3qapuMr
    x1 length of foam roll that you can cut into 2 pieces of roughly 40-60cm in length.
    The rest is pretty simple....
    The best part about this system is that it is a universal car roof rack which will work on almost any car. Its perfect for if you're looking for roof racks for a car without rails.
    Another HUGE advantage with this DIY roof rack system is that they are not permanent. This means, no more wasting fuel with roof racks that cause drag when you're not using them.
    One disadvantage with this DIY roof rack system is that it's susceptible to letting water leak into your car if it's raining hard. There are ways around this, but it can be frustrating.
    So if you're looking for roof racks for kayaks or surfboards - this is how to make a super cheap se yourself.

    Best guide I've seen for the pool noodle roof rack solution. Very detailed, great idea with the knots. Cheers.

    I think it is best if the fins are at the front aspect of the car, just in case the board slips back at high driving speeds. That way the find can prevent the board from slipping all the way off in the back (just in case) !
    super helpful tutorial, thanks!!!

      I'd advise using a denser foam for that. The softer foam might flatten out, depending on the weight of the fridge.

    Thanks for this video, very useful! Have you had any issues with the tight straps rubbing or damaging the board where they make contact with the rails?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  2 года назад +1

      No issues with any damage on boards. One of my old cars had very soft door seals that I had to protect by putting a plastic cover on, but other than that, no damage to any boards.

    One of the best diy car racks i have seen! One question about this. I am driving from hamburg to the atlantic cost in france. Does this car rack work for 130 km/h?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  4 года назад +4

      I haven't tested this exact one at 130km/h, but I've taken a very similar one up to 120km/h with no problems. (Obviously, this only applies if everything has been tightened correctly). If you are going fast, then try to twist the strapping a bit before putting it through the clasp, otherwise it will vibrate loudly when you pick up speed and drive you mad! Another thing to account for is, if it rains, water will be "pulled" into the cab through the bottom strap and drip on you while you drive. Easily rectified with a piece of cloth, but just worth noting. Have an awesome trip to France and let me know how the straps go...

    great video, for a kayak do you still need to tie down the front and back of it ?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  4 года назад

      Hmmm...I suppose it depends on the length of the kayak. I've only used this system once for a kayak that was about 9ft long and it was perfect. I just needed to push the front strap as far toward the front of the car as it would go and the back one as far back as it would go. I use this setup for my 9ft longboard all the time and it's great for that too.

    Very cool. But curious, is there any specific reason to have the foam rolls cut to the width of the board ... would it make any difference if just left wider than the actual board without cutting it? In can one might want to put on something wider in future ....

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  3 года назад +1

      Hi Rob, the only trouble with having the foam tubing wider than the board is that the bottom straps will cause them to wrap and put tension on the tube walls, potentially damage them. This is more of an issue with more dense foams. If you have a softer foam it should be fine. The other option is to cut multiple lengths of foam tubing and swap them in and out depending on what you're carrying.

    Interesting! Do you think it’s possible to continue with another foam around the attaching strap (at your 10min mark), so you can add another board, maybe stacking 2 or even 3 boards total?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  4 года назад +1

      Hmm...I suppose that could work. I usually carry 3 boards on this system as it is. I either put each board in a board bag to give them some cushioning, otherwise I just roll up some old towels and put them in between. Your way sounds neater though 😉

      Well I think your idea sounds way less complicated lol. I tend to overthink things. I was having a hard time visualizing the deep curved hull on one of my older SUPboards and it not stacking well. But you’re right, a few rolled up towels should do the trick and way less confusing. Perfect! Thanks 😊

    How does it go with water wicking into the car during rainy days?
    I have a soft roof rack I bought some time ago and got caught in rain... Water wicked along the straps pretty badly.

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  3 года назад

      Ah man - that is the Achilles' heel of this system. Mine leak in too on very rainy days - I've been thinking for a while about how to fix this. If I land on a solution I'll let you know.

    where did you get the foam rolls from? i'm not exactly sure what kind to get, would a pool noodle work? or should i find it at ahardware store or something?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  3 года назад +1

      I got mine from a hardware store. It's also called "foam tubing" - but I reckon a pool noodle will work just fine.

  • @themrjonesful
    @themrjonesful Год назад

    Hi! Thanks for sharing- would stacking 2 boards instead of just the one work fine you think?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  Год назад +1

      It works just fine. I stack boards on mine all the time. I can get 3 on top of each other if the fins are still on, and more if I take the fins off.

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  Год назад

      If you have 5+ boards, you can even use a longer foam roll and stack the boards next to each other which will be safer than trying to stack them too high.

    Why do the foam pieces need to be tied down? Could they just be placed and the board being tied down apply enough pressure to keep it where they are?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  Год назад

      That would work. Tying down just adds a layer of security.

    Do you recommend this for a 14' carbon race board??

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  3 года назад

      Hmm...I've never tried this system with a carbon race board myself, but I have used it for other kayaks with no problem. If you want extra stability/peace of mind, you could make a third tie-down and place it in the middle of the other two. So, depending on your car, two racks through the front doors and one through the back, or one through the front doors and two through the back.

    Can you use ratchet straps?

    • @Strayalongtheway
      @Strayalongtheway  2 года назад

      Yeah, I'm sure you could. You'd just need to make sure the ratchets aren't going to touch the roof of the car when it's all strapped up.
