Haul Kayak On Top of Two Door Car With Sunroof, No Roof Rack (Topwater 120)

  • Step by step instructions showing how to haul a kayak using a foam blocks kit on a two door car that has a moonroof. I drive a Toyotal Solar coupe. A lot of thought into how to transport my Topwater 120 PDL kayak using this model car that doesn't have carrier racks on top. Before deciding to use the foam blocks kit I considered the cost involved in installing luggage racks. Not wanting to invest a lot of money in transporting the kayak on the roof of my car I decided to put together my own kit that works great for the Old Town Topwater 120 PDL kayak.
I made my final decision that this would work after discussing the sunroof issue with a local kayak supply company. They said it wouldn't be an issue.
Here are the items I purchase separately:
    1. Two 24" wide foam blocks designed for hauling kayaks on the roof of vehicles
    2. Three cam straps, one 15' long and two 10' long. In the video I said the yellow straps were 12' long which was a mistake
    3. Four s-shaped hooks that I took off of black rubber style bungee straps
    4. Fifty feet of 1/4 thick rope
Additional items that I use in this video to help not scratch my Toyota Solar during the loading process are a large towel and a floor mat that has rubber padding on one side.
Hauling my Old Town Topwater kayak on the roof of my two door car is working out fine. If you have a newer vehicle, I wouldn't recommend using this method for transporting your kayak.

I've been searching almost all day for some solutions for my 2 door car and this is the only option that I've seen that doesn't either look unsafe or cost me an arm and a leg like some of the 2-door specialty roof racks that require heavy modifications to the vehicle. Thanks for thoroughly explaining it all as well. Excellent video!

    Good hack!
Pool noodles stacked and duct taped work too. Hood loops are great if you have no brackets to put bow and stern lines to. You can make them out of pool noodles or buy them fairly cheap.
I've had that issue with racks that clip onto the edge of the vehicle (mini van)... they ended up too close together for an 18' sea kayak. Blocks work well.
Points for the 20 year old car!!! and debt free!!! Same here...

I used those long (foam pool noodle tubes), and then inserted a length of 1/2 PVC pipe through it, to act as an Axle Roller and also to use as a cushion to rest the kayak on the tubes after it's placed on the roof. You actually get the best of both worlds here. I also screwed in nylon boat cleats onto the side of my fiberglass bed Cap, to tie down the kayak too. It's very useful if you own a fiberglass Truck Bed Top with no windows to tie down the Kayak. The pool noodles are very inexpensive to buy, as well as the PVC pipe . I used 1/2 PVC pipe at 12 feet long cut to length of noodle. The Total cost with noodles, PVC pipe, and decent rope was well under $25. Family Dollar had the noodles for $1.25

Thank you so much for your video! I recently purchased a kayak and I have a older Honda Civic Coupe. I found that Yakima has a clip on rack that would fit me but like you mentioned it looks like it would only work for a limited amount of space. Plus it is expensive. I think I am leaning towards this method because it is inexpensive, looks like it would work, plus you can put in your car when done. I like that you used other rope and metal clips for the front and back. I might consider finding some strong rope and purchasing metal hooks.

Be on the lookout for a couple oversized pool noodles, like 5 or 6 inches round. You can run your strap through the middle and when you push the yak onto the roof, they will roll. You can adjust their position once the boat is up there. They will eventually flatten, but they are cheap and good for at least a season. Looks like you are enjoying yourself!

Maybe could have saved some of that $65 by trying the larger size water noodles from Walmart (like 4" diameter)? I don't know for sure but they could work. The pressure of the center/front/rear straps pulling down on the kayak may negate the need of running the strap through the noodle at all, making them just a cushion held in place by the downward force on the kayak from the straps.

Hey JC, is there any way, you could share where you got those foam blocks please? Amazon has kits. I just need the blocks. Post a paid link here please. Not the one already in a reply above - that’s a kit too

Thanks for watching and asking. I've traveled the interstate eight times driving at 70 miles per hour. Each trip was about an hour long. It works fine. I haven't had any concerns at all, very stable way to transport the kayak.

Interesting, cut in half, good idea. These pads I use have a very sticky rubber on the bottom of them, very nice that they don't move. I am noticing that if I leaven the yak on the car for a couple of days that the foam blocks I'm using compress though.

Just my thoughts ...... I think eventually you are going to get tired of doing it like this, especially after you do it a couple of times in the pouring rain and you will end up with a professionally installed rack. Not trying to tell you what to do but if I was in your situation I would research which one I wanted and reach out to the company you choose and tell them you will produce a video on the rack and I think they will sponsor your new rack. Like I said...just my thoughts and no one has to agree.

That would be a good soulution for jc, but for most people, the 500$ starting price of a rack (or even 300$ used) is a total non starter. Hard to justify a rack that costs more than my kayak. I just picked up a yakima easy rack, which seems to be a happy medium, removes 80% of the work involved with using blocks but its pretty cheap, easily 4x cheaper than a hard mount rack, I paid 125. There are similar products for less. I havent used it yet, so will we see how it works out. But yea, a several hundred dollar rack is just not an option for many people.
