  • In 1954, while thousands were fleeing communist East Berlin, American and British intelligence officers were tunneling in. Working with Britain’s MI6 and US and British army engineers, the CIA dug a tunnel into the Soviet sector of Berlin. The goal? Tapping Soviet military and intelligence communications cables.
Steve Vogel, author of the upcoming book, Diamond and Gold: George Blake, the Berlin Tunnel and an Epic Tale of Cold War Espionage, will reveal the remarkable story behind the tunnel’s clandestine construction, its betrayal by the notorious British spy George Blake, and the truth about the effectiveness of this audacious project.

What an incredible presentation. This channel is woefully undersubscribed at 13k. If I’m ever in DC, you better believe I’ll be visiting!

local library had a "$5/Fill a bag with books" sale last week and my kids found a book he thought I would like called "CIA: The Inside Story about our government's most secret organization....the Central Intelligence Agency" by Andrew Tully
....bit of a convoluted title, but it's a great book! it's old, from 1963, so it's very interesting to hear what people thought about things then and compare it to now.
I just started and it starts off with the story of the Berlin Tunnel. When it said that the East Germans turned it into a public museum for a while after it was found due to how impressive the tunnel was..... I had to take a pause and go learn about this event as it's own incident.

Just goes to show some of the frustrations that accompany espionage. Many examples how the an opposing force can’t immediately act on actionable intelligence, as cessation of certain activities would divulge knowledge of ‘said’ spying programs...I imagine that’s very frustrating for top agency officials and field officers. Catch 22 for certain!

This is a fantastic channel, but there seems to always be some problems with it: it's either with the microphone, or the lighting (slides)! (For example, you could a mic ON the person.) For Pete's Sake, get it right. We're not asking for a lot here!

Nope. Not "um," "ahh--." Now that we have voice recognition and speed and pitch control, there should be a way to filter out these idiosyncrasies.

The occasional verbal tic is normal, but this dude manages to crunch a few dozen into every sentence. It's unwatchable.

In 1947 "The Diary of a Young Girl" was published in which Anne Frank documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944. “Half” of the original document was written in ball point pen. The ball point pen wasn’t readily available until the middle 1950s.

@@joachim5080 No it wasn't. Stop lying. Besides that, there was a lawsuit about it and who forged parts of it. Either you're a Jew or citing Jews who lie all the time.

Once the KGB learns of the tunnel in 1948...”So, how’s Sasha like school?” (Soviet KGB officer twirling his fingers in his hair) “And these bread lines! What a nightmare!” 🤣 “And can you believe those Navy idiots stenciled ‘property of US on those underwater cables?’” GRU officer spinning around on a bar stool listening to our cables. 🤣🤣🤣
