  • @Beehj84

    In terms of core count these days, I look to performance cores mostly and consider efficiency cores as a bonus. My recommendations (as a PC builder) are as follows: budget gaming aim for 6 cores eg 5600 or 12400, though the 13400 if it gets E-cores will become the absolute standard here, budget productivity aim for 8 cores eg: 5700x/5800x or 12700 if you can stretch, and everything above that is specific to your needs as we have the 5800x3d for gaming focus in one direction whilst the 13600k takes the all-rounder position, and the 13900k or 7950x are top-tier monsters.
    This 13600k is a cracking little unit, but I'm still slightly uneasy about only 6 P-cores considering the buy-in cost for K-SKU and motherboard, cooler, etc as it starts to creep up in price. This is why I think the rumoured 13400 (6c + 4c) is going to stomp in the budget gaming category, whilst for those who are investing in the z690/790 motherboards and higher tier gaming should stretch to a 13700k to get the extra 2x Pcores (relative to the cost outlay).
    There are so many variables in the different configurations nowadays that deciding on components is a truly bespoke process.

I now only consider multithreading performance with Blender and single threading performance with Photoshop as a judgement criteria for purchasing a CPU. Because the Cinebench results are not reflective of actual performance.
    Price wise though the 13600K is on the same level as the 7700X not the 7600X. The 7600X is 100€ cheaper at 350€, at least here in Greece.

      While the pricing of the i5 and R5 don't always match up, the platform cost still puts these 2 as direct competitors:
      i5 + B660 + DDR4 is slightly ahead for most workloads but costs at least €100 less than 7600X + B650 + DDR5,
      Need/want DDR5? Then the i5 handily beats the R5 (okay it's just another 5% or so) for roughly the same platform cost (can still use B650 instead of B750)

    8:45 For gaming performance, or in other words the "FPS", it is not the E-cores doing something, but it is the L2/L3 cache allocated to E-cores doing something. When you disable the E-cores, you are also disabling the use of the L2/L3 cache allocated to E-cores, ending up getting less L2/L3 cache for the CPU. That is why disabling the E-cores does not give you an obvious FPS improvement for 13th gen. In Bios settings, we cannot set the number of P-cores to 0, the minimum is 1. But we can try to compare the performance of 1P+8E vs. 6P+0E vs. 8P+0E in the games, it will be a very interesting test.

    • @canberrano1widowmaker
      @canberrano1widowmaker Год назад

      In other words, if Intel changes all the E-cores of the 13th gen to P-cores, the gaming performance would actually be higher than it is now.

    • @hachiman3742
      @hachiman3742 Год назад +1

      Isn't cache shared among p and e cores? When e cores are off p cores can still access them. I think with hybrid arch it's best to check gaming performance when having load of things in background like discord, chrome and some other stuff. It can make sizable difference against amd's just 8-cores or 6 cores part. Tho all is just a speculation until tested.

    • @canberrano1widowmaker
      @canberrano1widowmaker Год назад

      @@hachiman3742 L3 is shared for the P and E cores, but the L1 and L2 cache are private to each core in the P cores and E cores. Intel processors don’t have as much L3 cache as AMD’s but have more L2 cache than AMD’s, so 13900K will end up getting much less L2+L3 total cache than AMD 7950X if E-cores are disabled. That way, you get the pure performance of an 8 P-cores 13900K. As the Intel P-cores are intrinsically stronger than the AMD cores, you will still have pretty strong performance with even less L2 cache. But when the E-cores are enabled, the more L2 cache won’t promise you a higher FPS because the E cores are intrinsically weaker than the P-cores. So… it is a trade-off between more weak cores (more weak cores = lower FPS if they process gaming programs) and more L2 cache (larger cache = higher FPS).
      If people argue that E-cores won’t be processing any intense gaming programs, then only the P-cores are processing your games, that way, even the E-cores are enabled in a 13900K during your games, it is actually still an 8P+0E 13900K for your gaming, and therefore your 13900K won’t be using the L2 cache that was privately allocated to E cores anyway. So whether your game uses E cores or not, it falls into one of the two senators I outlined above.
      Conclusion: So only if the L2 cache of disabled E cores can still be shared by 8 P cores, you can get the highest FPS, otherwise you won't get much of a difference whether you block E cores or not.

    Honestly the extreme UK prices of the intel are enough that I think if they just brought out a £150 cheaper motherboard for AM5 that'd be an instant consideration, especially since this otherwise far superior processor gets completely trounced in many if not most games by the X3D. Those AM5 3D variants are clearly going to be miles ahead in gaming, I don't think there's another sensible interpretation. As it is, it's barely cheaper than the X3D (and probably just in general more expensive when you include a compatible motherboard) but both behind in a lot of games and presumably even further behind if money is being saved and it isn't being paired with fast DDR5 RAM. As it stands, outside of very few titles it seems like it is a competition between "considerably worse gaming performance" and "drastically worse general productivity performance", with no upgrade path for either. My PC is horrendously old, but while stuff like the 5600 or 12400 are cheap, they're also still part of a prospective system that will still cost over a grand and potentially going to be struggling to keep up in a couple of years (and second hand CPUs don't seem to depreciate massively, so I've no illusions about being able to get a dirt cheap X3D in three years). Ah, this is such a debate. I'd like enough headroom that I can go another 7 years without my CPU performance behind a hinderance, but jumping to a new platform or DDR5 or an almost £400 CPU adds so massively to the costs.

    7700x is the king under $400 then you put a 3d cache chip there keeping the same motherboard and ram compatible with pcie5 for future proof... aside ot is more power efficient... I am following thatbpath, I just got rid of my 12900k and I couldn't be much happier with the 7700x... set the curve optimizer and temps stayed in the 50°C
