Can we take a moment to appreciate how good a presenter Ben is! No awkward silences, no tripping over words, no unnecessary endless use of superlatives.
I am German and I have the greatest respect for the 037 - this Lancia was knighted by Walter Roehrl and flew Lancia to the championship. What a supercar.
he did a lot of work with audi, but he really doted on the lancias. i think he really felt how visceral and raw they were, designed for nothing more than the job at hand
Many Gen Xers would like one of those. I'd take the Lancia. Your silence as The Stig was wasted Ben: excellent presenter, great commentary and explanations of the experience
I never understood how lucky I was at 17 when my mother bought me an 84 Audi 4000 quattro, it was my second car, My first being a $300 chevy that was giraffe yellow with black spots of rust reformer on it and was less reliable than a alcoholic step father in a horror film. Basically she wanted the car out of her driveway. We both loved the car, I miss both her and it. Was definitely the car that sealed my love for cars. Thank you mom!
Friend of mine owns the actual 037 used in the film Audi vs Lancia. Was very fortunate to potter on it and be a passenger last weekend on a shake down drive. Stunning stunning car. Have no interest in a new Ferrari or Lambo etc. I’d take one of these every day. Kimera are doing an Ev038 which it worth keeping an eye on too.
Audi made a homologated Sport Quattro street version of the rally car. A much more high-strung tuned engine and shorter and smaller car than the Ur-Quattro. Wish you would have had that to help with a more direct comparison. But the 037 has always had the magic and why I have a Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion that I'm resto-modding. Thanks for taking us around and letting us hear the machines!
What shocked me about driving the 037 Stradale back in the ‘80s, was just how usable it was. With that huge rear spoiler, it was awkward to reverse into parking spots and you had to be careful with high kerbs because the front bib was low but it was otherwise very drivable and surprisingly refined, with a supple ride. On open roads you could switch to beast mode and drive it hard and, even without reaching its limits it would still raise a smile. But you felt that you needed to be mindful of the fact that 037s were rare, even then - unlike the ubiquitous and seemingly bullet-proof Quattro, which could be thrown around without a second thought.
Nice vid Ben, the owner of the 037 was so nice to me at my son. I flagged him down a couple of years ago in Long Hanborough. So relaxed on letting us look at the car and subsequently we went to the Lancia meet near Didcot and met a wonderful group of Lancia owners. I’ve been a huge fan since I was a child and still get goosebumps whenever I see one. 👍👍👍
S4 was deadly. If you watch all the videos with S4 - waw what a machine. The ba..s on drivers who drowe that monsters are really big. B group era was fast but dangerous. But the best on to watch - cars racing in the see of fans who jump away at the last second 😮
@@Redmi-j4i Yes, the best among them lost his life - Henri Toivonen. He was good enough to be F1 driver, but his family decided to go with rallying - as in theirs opinion it was safer. What an irony!
Many years ago I knew a man who was a diehard Lancia fan. He had a new car every few months. I always asked him what had happened to the old car, had he crashed it? He said no, but there were too many very expensive repairs to be done. He bought a different car each time in the hope of not having to spend a fortune on repairs, but the concept didn't work. After Lancia he had exactly the same problems with Maserati. A friend who is an automotive engineer once told me that the main problem with Lancia is the delicate engine. Due to the weight savings in the material, it is unstable under load and warps. This not only leads to high levels of wear, but also to leaky seals. This doesn't matter in racing, where a new engine is regularly installed at factory expense, but end customers don't get a free replacement engine.
I'm still amazed that Walter Röhrl got world Rally champion with 4 different manufacturers. And survived the madness called "Group B". 😎🤘 And regarding the Quattro: one Audi driver said that you absolutely have to drive it "dirty" and "throw" it into corners - because it understeers like crazy. 😜
The way he let the car settle and didnt over correct on the one turn was amazing true skill watching ben drive is amazing as close to walter roule as we can get excellent video mr Collins 👌 perfecto
The 037 is one of the sexiest of cars in the world, in my eyes. If I hit the lottery I would want an 037 and S4 for heydays and delta integrale for daily driving (After replacing the quality tin with stainless steel panels a-la DeLorean) Dreams... Lancia dreams... :)

You can tell Ben is driving a 1/217 car that is worth $1,000,000.00 . I've been lucky enough to go for a ride in one of these, i knew it was a rare car but I had no idea how special it was at the time. Love it.
Yes! I commented on one of your earlier videos on how much I'd love to see you behind the wheel of the 037, easily my favorite car design of all time and the 1983 WRCs is my favorite car story of all time. Wonderful vid and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll find a kind original Stratos owner to let you play with the imperfect but impactful car and you can finish your channel's punch card for Lancia rally classics lol
Love the Audi! I'd have one in a heartbeat, alas budget wouldn't stretch so I bought a Scirocco, still the same 80's vibe and puts a silly grin on my face every time I get behind the wheel! Great drive Ben, thank you. 👍🇬🇧

Superb camera work and great presentation. I see that particular 037 regularly at Shelsley Walsh and other venues and it’s a credit to the owner that it is properly used and not stored away.
Great content Ben. After the 037 the next car was the Delta S4 started in Nov1985 at the RAC Rally. After all the incidents in the 86 Season and the subsequent shut down of Group B Lancia started te 87 season with the Delta 4wd, then in 87 the Integrale in all its variations. Yup Group B was something special :-0
Great video. The Audi is one of my favourite car form the 80's. Unfortunatelly, I'm only allowed to drive with an automatic transmission, so owning and driving one stays as a dream.
Well reading in an old book about rallying when the group B was started they even didn't know that the handbrakes will be helpful for taking a U turns. So this was evolving.
Great video and two of my hero cars! Would love to have seen the Sport Quattro as well, but you can’t have everything! Group B was slap bang in the middle of me becoming a teenager and I loved watching it. Of course I had the obligatory Michele Mouton poster, I mean what could be better at that age, a gorgeous young lady taking on and beating the men in her Quattro!
Some absolutely fantastic cars from that period,Ford RS200,Metro 6R4,Toyota Celica,Peugeot 205 T16 and of course these 2 (I’m thinking that this Lancia was the last 2 wheel drive to win a rally) in this vlog, shame it had to come to end due to tragic the deaths of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto in the 1986 Tour de Corse,in their Lancia Delta S4,the FIA banned the group from competing in the WRC from the following season
Thanks Ben for the great vid, I Love Pembrey circuit. When I walk my dogs in the forest and hear the roar of engines it makes me want to be back doing track days of years gone past. One thing I have to pick you up on is that it’s pronounced Pembray not Pembrey as it’s spelt. Won’t mention names but we used to chuck bikes out the back of a van if they’d been crashed doing track days to claim off insurance, knowing they weren’t covered for track use.😂
I almost bought one when new (got a Porsche 944 instead), but did have the legit successor, the RS2 (which you should do a video about), as well as the RS4
Awesome stuff Ben. Your channel keeps growing in every way. I've always loved the 037 Stradale and have been drawn to homologation specials. Hoping you can one day jump into a Delta S4 Stradale and/or an RS200 Evo, but love me some of the more obscure Group B near-misses such as the BX 4TC, 240RS...road versions are unicorns =)
Ben talks about the lightness and brittleness of the 037, and that made me think of how, apparently, the weight saving measures on the Delta S4 Rally car were so extreme that part of it slowly fell apart just from going through the stages.
I'm really surprised that you didn't complain about wind noise in the quattro, the passenger door is open! I had a ur in the early 90's absolutely loved it. Fantastic car.
Hi Ben, nice test. I put headphones on for the Audi test and the rattling sounded very like a tumbler of whiskey with ice cubes. Nice to see Pembrey again ps. pronounced pem bray. Been watching content on the Tolman resto mods on Peugeot 109's today too. The 80's are coming back, you might be right

I own a Urquattro and you can have Bluetooth and all that stuff in style with a Blaupunkt Hamburg SQM 23 DAB and great Sound in combination with a little Pioneer TS-WX010A under the seat. Love the 037 Stradale - one of the most beautiful cars of all time.
Good episode!! Two of my all time favorite’s along with the Stratos.👍🏼👍🏼 I have to ask, was the passenger door ajar on one of those laps or am I seeing things?
@jreacock No problems there, honestly. I drive my datsun just fine without a tach, I assume you're used to the sound of it well enough to know when to shift.
Ahhhh 80's Homologation and derived cars, Rally and GT racing brought us some incredible cars that are still comfortable on modern roads especially the German marques :-)
Good vid!! Should have got a Sport Quattro for the shoot tho...... Hey it took till Ken Block was in his 50's before he realised the 80's 5 cylinder turbo Audi engine is probably on of the best engines ever made and that the UR was Oh so special ...he dropped Ford after more than decade for the UR and Audi's 5 pot .... you're getting there 🙂
Top video Ben For me it’s the Lancia all day long what a beautiful car If I had 80 k I would by the Audi Quattro and not a modern Audi I’m the same age as you and the respect you will get driving a 80s Audi Quattro will never be beaten

I love Lancias, even with that gauge at 9:59 reminding us it's an italian car through and through! 😂
A tab on the drive gear coming from the gearbox snapped recently. Might be weldable - but parts are hard to find. Speedo works fine otherwise.
@jreacock No problems there, honestly. I drive my datsun just fine without a tach, I assume you're used to the sound of it well enough to know when to shift.
The amount of roll on the back wheels is hilarious 😂
Ahhhh 80's Homologation and derived cars, Rally and GT racing brought us some incredible cars that are still comfortable on modern roads especially the German marques :-)
Good vid!! Should have got a Sport Quattro for the shoot tho...... Hey it took till Ken Block was in his 50's before he realised the 80's 5 cylinder turbo Audi engine is probably on of the best engines ever made and that the UR was Oh so special ...he dropped Ford after more than decade for the UR and Audi's 5 pot .... you're getting there 🙂
Top video Ben
For me it’s the Lancia all day long what a beautiful car
If I had 80 k I would by the Audi Quattro and not a modern Audi
I’m the same age as you and the respect you will get driving a 80s Audi Quattro will never be beaten
Totally agree
Wow. He's really pushing it. Like my Gran driving to Tesco.
Love it, two amazing cars 👌🏻
