Pearls, especially round ones, were more valuable than diamonds before the advent of 'cultured pearls' in 1907 in Europe. This is why we see pearls and not diamonds in old paintings. One just needs to know about real pearls (luster, shape, color, weight, roundness perfection, light reflection etc), the market and to know the ideal places where to buy them with authenticity background. Visited the amber room a few years ago and the most impressive thing was the love and patience the Russians had to restore it perfectly a mammoth task but it shows their love and care for their heritage.

I think they are OTT and ugly, emblematic of people still treating their subjects as peasants - centuries after widespread enfranchisement in Western Europe. Just my opinion of course.

As a descendent of slaves from North and South America, I really don't think Russia or any other country that used slavery to enrich itself deserves to keep jewels gotten by human suffering. A really interesting documentary...however, the scrolling adverts along the bottom were annoying, unnecessary and distracting to say the least. Why were the two Indian gentleman dubbed over? How does a ruby disintegrate? Since Amber is highly flammable, it may have burned during the war, otherwise, I would think someone is still alive that knows what happened to it.

What a shame that this informative and very interesting documentary is ruined by the constant advertising running along the bottom of the screen. It is distracting and very annoying. Surely all the information could have been shown at the beginning or the end of the programme. Unfortunately it interfered so much with the enjoyment and educational properties of the film that I gave up and switched it off. It all irritated me too much. Pity.
It absolutely drove me crazy trying to place the narrator. At 24:04 in I realized it was the actress Liv Tyler. She has distinctive soft voice that I knew was a voice actor immediately. I can’t figure out why she read over the Indian gentleman speaking perfect English but perhaps she wasn’t given a full viewing before doing her script reading. Perhaps they just sent it to her in pieces to narrate.

I got to see this fascinating exhibit in Topeka Kansas in the 90s I think. There was one section that had a fake horse pulling a sled in the snow, and quite a few people working there said the horse would move at night. It's ears would move and the clopping of hooves could be heard at night by security guards.

The jewels were so opulent and although I knew of the original Amber Room, I could never picture it in my mind. The concept was easy but the range of colours were something I could never imagine.The replica room looks incredible, how would it feel to be able to order an entire room of amber built on a whim? Other rulers must have marvelled at the size and cost of it, that the Russian royals were so superior that they didn't just wear the jewels, instead they adorned whole walls with them. I wonder if they discarded those pieces with insects inside as imperfect specimens? Like all good documentaries, this one has stimulated my thoughts and prompted more questions for me to find answers to.

I think in a way that Royal people are kind of disgusting. I believe in being charitable but not by force because somebody complains or thinks they deserve something that they didn't earn. I would say the royals are part of that group in a lot of cases. Coveting what others have and dictating what they should do with what they have causes a lot of the hardships around the world.

Pearls, especially round ones, were more valuable than diamonds before the advent of 'cultured pearls' in 1907 in Europe. This is why we see pearls and not diamonds in old paintings. This is why "The girl with the pearl earring" by Vermeer caused such a shock. A servant girl trying on a pearl earring of her mistress!!! The painting was a social statement of magnitude, something that people cannot understand anymore because pearls have become as cheap as raisins.
Well, I don't know what do you mean by "cheap" ...that applies only to fresh/saline water cultured "barroque" pearls and, to the fancy colored ones especially, sold by string for cheap bijuterie. But: --- Natural sea pearls are still highly expensive and still, some specimens worth way more than diamonds by karat weight. One just needs to know about real pearls (luster, shape, color, weight, roundness perfection, light reflection etc), the market and to know the ideal places where to buy them with authenticity background. The most trusted place to buy a nice good natural pearl is Japan, due their millenary reputation of some pearl houses, they won't risk that such reputation by selling junk.

The pearl is a symbol of perfection and incorruptibility; it is a symbol of long life and fertility and highly feminine therefore often used in art ,besides much more effective in a painting than a diamond!! you need to do a bit art history home work before commenting otherwise you make an exhibition of yourself :-)
Visited the amber room a few years ago and the most impressive thing was the love and patience the Russians had to restore it perfectly a mammoth task but it shows their love and care for their heritage.
It is not the original Amber room, which disappeared at the end of WWll. The Russian artists cut amber based on pictures to recreate the Amber Room.
All that extravagance of the Russian family just looking at the inside of the palace everything is decked out in gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, sapphires, rubies, jade, emeralds etc if I ever came to visit the family I'd be afraid to sit down.

Gemmology is a fascinating subject, and I have studied it for years, purely as a hobby. This video is indeed interesting which demonstrates the origin of gem stones that were created in India, and used by the Romanov imperial family. This is a complex story... The Emperor and his wife wanted to stay in Russia with their people. This is their choice. But the children could have been saved by his cousin, the king of England, but he refused to do this, fearing a revolution in the British Empire.

Agree. Neither Alexandra nor any of her daughters, the Grand Duchesses, were wearing jewels when the family and their entourage were killed! They were under 'house arrest ', any major jewels they had successfully taken with them had been dismantled and hidden in their clothes and belongings when they were murdered.

I think they are OTT and ugly, emblematic of people still treating their subjects as peasants - centuries after widespread enfranchisement in Western Europe. Just my opinion of course.

Probably the best documentary I’ve seen about the Russian Crown Jewels. Such a shame the entire collection was not kept together.
As a descendent of slaves from North and South America, I really don't think Russia or any other country that used slavery to enrich itself deserves to keep jewels gotten by human suffering. Until Russia learns this lesson, it will continue to falter. They speak of the curse of the ruby. Maybe if Russia asks God for forgiveness, its many woes will cease to exist. But as it is now, people pity Russia for losing what wasn't hers to begin with. Likewise, the country needs to denounce the soldiers who killed the Tsar family. Go look on RUclips to find radio and film footage of the soldiers bragging about killing the family. Human suffering is nothing to be proud of. Somehow Russia glorifies people who do this. Thus, the suffering continues!

I doubt any of the campaigns to have stolen treasures returned will be successful. After the Romanov family was murdered almost all their own jewels along with the royal jewels were sold by the Bolsheviks. They only kept a few pieces and I imagine later reaquired some. Many pieces were bought by European royal families and American millionaires.

Indian accent is rather hard to understand a lot of the time to be honest - its not an insult is just a fact - some English accents in UK are hard to understand - it all depends where the listener comes from

A really interesting documentary...however, the scrolling adverts along the bottom were annoying, unnecessary and distracting to say the least. Why were the two Indian gentleman dubbed over? They spoke fluent English and were perfectly easy to understand. The narrator could also do with brushing up on her pronunciation of certain words.
I design jewelry and have indulged in creating it, as well as drowning myself in its aesthetics by seeking and collecting images of beautiful pieces for over 50 years. The history of these amazing gems and jewelry is fascinating because of its convoluted and often bloody details. But one point which is worth noting.....is that all the royals who came or come to possess them use funds extracted from their poor subjects, or wealth looted from others. Is it any wonder then, that they carry such dark and heavy energies? 🤔
Tsars and emperors all tend to make the same mistake which is that they come to think and behave like the people are there for them instead of the other way around. Any leader should improve the lot of his subjects, but most don't and some even make it worse. The Romanaovs like the French Louis XV and XVI did nothing for their people. E.g. the abolishment of serfdom had been requested for many decades but the Romanovs refused. Tax reform had been requested for centuries in France but the Bourbons refused. So the desperate populations started a revolution and the heads of state losed their head. I consider all these events Another Exercise in How Crazy Can You Get. Some inaccurate information. The Bolshevik Revolution took place in October not February. There were 2 revolutions. When speaking about Empress Alexandra they showed the portrait of the previous Empress Maria Feodorovna

When the Bolsheviks stormed the palace and captured the imperial family, they did NOT shoot the Tsar or any of the others. They were taken to Tsarskoe Selo, then transported to Vladivostock and then to Ekaterinburg, and it was there, in 1918, that they were all murdered.

What a shame that this informative and very interesting documentary is ruined by the constant advertising running along the bottom of the screen. It is distracting and very annoying. Surely all the information could have been shown at the beginning or the end of the programme. Unfortunately it interfered so much with the enjoyment and educational properties of the film that I gave up and switched it off. It all irritated me too much. Pity.
It absolutely drove me crazy trying to place the narrator. At 24:04 in I realized it was the actress Liv Tyler. She has distinctive soft voice that I knew was a voice actor immediately. I can’t figure out why she read over the Indian gentleman speaking perfect English but perhaps she wasn’t given a full viewing before doing her script reading. Perhaps they just sent it to her in pieces to narrate.

The greatest Finnish statesman Mannerheim was present at the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II, then serving in the Imperial Chevalier Guard. It was to him "indescribably magnificent".
I got to see this fascinating exhibit in Topeka Kansas in the 90s I think. There was one section that had a fake horse pulling a sled in the snow, and quite a few people working there said the horse would move at night. It's ears would move and the clopping of hooves could be heard at night by security guards.

The jewels were so opulent and although I knew of the original Amber Room, I could never picture it in my mind. The concept was easy but the range of colours were something I could never imagine.The replica room looks incredible, how would it feel to be able to order an entire room of amber built on a whim? Other rulers must have marvelled at the size and cost of it, that the Russian royals were so superior that they didn't just wear the jewels, instead they adorned whole walls with them. I wonder if they discarded those pieces with insects inside as imperfect specimens? Like all good documentaries, this one has stimulated my thoughts and prompted more questions for me to find answers to.

What I really have to comment is: This documentary is full an full of advertising, it is not possible to follow it properly. There are other documentaries which placed them really better; six or seven ads during the first quarter of an hour - this is impossible, just totally annoying. So one can not take this one really for serious.
