A Poem for the Busy

- Here is a poem for the busy.
I also saw a carrot dangling
But the string broke.
So I picked the carrot up and ate it.
It was ok, somewhat sweet, but mostly hard to chew.
As my jaw got sore, I realized what I was chasing wasn’t as great as it seemed.
I broke bones and broke hearts chasing that carrot.
I got lost and slept in the rain chasing that carrot.
But getting lost was part of it.
You’ve got to get lost to get found.
You’ve got to lose your mind to be grateful for it.
Like a hangover, you wake up swearing new beginnings…
You say, that carrot isn’t worth the traffic.
It’s not the worth the time away from loved ones.
The moments you don’t get back..
until years later,
you realize the silliness of idolizing paper.
That paper can’t buy back the moments of love you traded
But at the time you thought it was worth it.
The whole world, you thought, will know you.
You will be somebody.
But it’s amazing how quickly people forget.
You think of all the famous people your parents spoke of that you couldn’t care less about. What were their names?
Exactly.
And with all your paper, inflation happens and the tax man takes his cut.
If you finally feel like a cog in a giant wheel, it’s time to come back into your Self.
Not into that somebody you wanted to be.
But into the Self that doesn’t need to stay busy in order to Exist. The part of you that is free to do and be, whatever. To sit on a bench in a park, watching the grass grow.
Start there, and then take back your life from the inside out.
It’s from the inside that all those feelings you were chasing should come anyways. The wealth is in there, locked away, and only you have the key.

This video made me emotional. I'm working so hard to become debt free, so that I can really be free. This poem of yours has been my motto for life over the past few years. I want to spend the rest of my days not being busy with my loved ones. Not working day and night to pay off a credit card or student loan or mortgage for a huge house with too many rooms I'll never use. I'm almost there. I'm so close I can smell the fresh water from the creek that will be on my land. I already see it. I see my future constantly. It makes me excited, antsy, and then sad because I'm so close, but still have a little ways to go.
I'm going listen to this poem several more times, probably cry, and then keep working towards the peaceful future I know is waiting for me. Far from the life I've always been told I needed to have in order to be happy. I spit that darn carrot out ages ago. Great video.

Such a wonderful poem, Evan. I feel so busy and tired being a stay at home mom, but I know it's the most important thing for my babes. I won't regret this choice. One day, I will be so glad I did it. Even though right now, it's soo so hard.
